Art looks stiff and dated so I doubt it. It’s no where near as good as Moebius or random heavy metal artists
Part of the entire charm of the series is watching BWS evolve from Kirby influence to pre Raphaelite influences.
I like BWS
BIG
WHITE
SWORD
Kino
It's good, and it gets better, but I rate Hal Foster's Prince Valiant higher.
Other contenders are Jeff Smith's Bone, Michael T Gilbert on Elric, Dave Sim on Cerebus, Mark Evanier and Sergio Aragones' Groo, Stan Sakai's Usagi Yojimbo, Vaughn Bode's Deadbone.
If you want to include manga, there's Berserk, Vinland Saga, Lone Wolf and Cub, Aqua Knight, maybe The Rose of Versailles counts.
The Courageous Princess by Rod Espinosa, just to show that Princeless could have been done right.
Great recs. I'd add Moebius, Mignola's Hellboy and P. Craig Russell's Ring Cycle.
Hellboy is capeshit or pulp, not fantasy
I wouldn't even call it pulp except to the extent that all capeshit is. Bought the boxset expecting it to be a dumber, more horror-tinged LOEG or something and it's complete slop aside from the art, nothing really horrific or pulpy about it and it was clearly plotted as Mignola went along.
Not even close.
Everything listed here , excluding the manga that isn't Berserk is better.
There's also the work of Alex Alice, Kersacoet, and P. Craig Russell.
The Buscema/Alcala Conan is also superior to the BWS Conan.
>Lone Wolf and Cub
>fantasy
What?
Well, swords. More historical than fantasy and more chambara than jidaigeki. Chronologically probably closer to the Renaissance stuff, like Rose of Versailles or Chevalier D'eon.
Why are you even sperging?
>Why are you even sperging?
It was just a simple "what". I wouldn't call most japanese samurai films fantasy either.
Your manga list is mostly non-fantasy. I don't know why you even bothered.
Neither do I. More than any other board, /tg/ really punishes you for contributing.
If someone wanted to get into the genre with one of these in the list, what would be your recommendation?
Why don't you ask one of these other buttholes, because clearly they know more than I do.
Why can't you just admit you were wrong to include historical fiction as fantasy?
I actually don't have to argue with random buttholes at all.
Then you will remain a stubborn moron on record.
No, I just don't feel the need to wrestle a shit man in a pile of shit to win a prize of shit.
Yet here you are, stubborn moron.
Kinda depends on your particular tastes, as those are all massively different in tone and style.
Personally, i'm a fan of the Elric stuff and Berserk but I guess i'm an edgegay at heart.
>maybe The Rose of Versailles counts
No it doesn't. Its historical fiction that in no way resembles fantasy
I might be a total gay here but Busiek/Nord's Conan is the definitive comics portrayal imho.
I'm reading this series right now and I like it a lot but Nord's art slips in quite a few issues imo. That first issue is gorgeous but it seems like he has a hard time keeping up with monthlies at times (which is understandable).
I almost want to chalk it up to the unique nature of Nord & Stewart's artwork in this series. I can't really think of too many other comics that forego inking entirely and instead opt for colors directly over penciled linework.
The Dungeon, bros.
You guys like Gareth Hinds? He did the Illiad, Odyssey and Beowulf. Up there with Russell's Nibelung for me
Is his stuff ripped anywhere? I'd love to see the Iliad adaptation.
Buscema >>>>> BWS
someone said BWS depicted the world better, but buscema did a better character
I know Larry Hama, who was the editor, has said it but I forget f he was the original source or simply agreed with the statement.
late run BWS >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>.Buscema > early run BWS
I'm starting to see a stark increase of fantasy comics but not yet to see any new long-runners
It's not even the best BWS fantasy.
>Rob Liefeld has nothing to offer. It’s as plain as bacon on your plate. He has nothing to offer. He cannot draw. He can’t write. He is a young boy almost, I would expect, whose culture is bubble gum wrappers, Saturday morning cartoons, Marvel comics; that’s his culture. Somebody was at his house and came back with a report: There is not a single book in his house — only comic books. I see nothing in his work that allows me to even guess that there’s any depth involved in that person that might come to the fore given time.
