      >actually has to work hard/use her wits to accomplish the same as the men
This is an important observation, in that it aknowledges that as a woman, she is at a physical disadvantage to me and has to make up for that in other ways. Modern film has a frail girl just beating the shit out of men, like a men would, as if there were no physical disadvantage. Even Kill Bill had her using her wits and dexterity to best the men, not brute strength.

      Anonymous

Another thing to note is that the movie doesn't empower her by putting down the men. The characters are all portrayed as capable and likeable, even the comic reliefs. The men aren't cowards and weaklings so that Mulan can shine in comparison; the villain isn't a pushover, but a genuine threat and a challenge for Mulan (and the others) to overcome.

In woke media, badly written, unlikeable and visibly unathletic girlbosses are artificially propped up by making the men around them even more pathetic. The women's power is borrowed, not earned.

She killed the entire Mongolian army with a single cannon shot and was the most competent "man" of the entire army besides Li Shang. She was basically a Mary Sue but it's OK because it was during childhood

She joined voluntarily while the other men were drafted so she was more motivated. Also causing the avalanche is a more believable woman move than her ever winning a sword fight.

She didn’t kill them, she started an avalanche to hold them off and using cannons is mary sue now?

I like Mulan and don't think it's woke. But nostalgia goggles + new thing bad is a tale as old as time. Yes things are more "woke" nowadays but I highly doubt that there was some magic year where all female/black/whatever characters suddenly stopped being organic and started having an agenda.

      Debatable.

      Beauty and the Beast
      Aladdin, all 3 sequels
      The Lion King
      A Goofy Movie
      Pocahontas
      Toy Story
      Tarzan
      Fantasia 2000

All had at least one better song than Mulan, in some instances two or three.

Hunchback sucked dick, as a movie and musically.

Read the original poem, it's really short. She only joins the war because she was worried about her ill father. When she returns home after the war she immediately puts the armor away and puts on makeup and returns to the kitchen. Her comrades don't even know she's a woman until they visit her home and see her that way.

Yeah but that guy is just the creepy diseased little israelite of the movie. Literally every other man is a noble warrior. Even the bad guys are all absolute beasts, it’s not like they’re moronic jobbers. Shan Yui gives Gaston a run for his money in the beast department. Beauty and the Beast is way more “woke” IMO. Belle is an awful character. Mulan is great.

No, quite the opposite. Mulan went to war completely unskilled and knowing she would get killed if they found out she's a girl. That's stunning and brave in the real sense and not how twitter uses that term. She was probably Disney's best "strong female character" and then they fricked it all up in the remake.
