I think that was the biggest frick-up about it. Like, they dedicated an entire episode to showing how they had at least some form of chemistry, then break things off between episodes and move on. It was possible to show that the relationship was inevitably going to fail for some reason, at it almost felt hinted at in the sports episode, but they just threw their hands up and said "they broke up, okay!" and expected that to be sufficient.
At least it seems like Kelly got with a new guy and it seems to be alright from that fairly recent Nefcy art piece where they were at the beach.

I'm not saying that the video essayist is wrong but 1.) I don't think Kelly is black, as least in the traditional sense and 2.) SVTFOE is awful to pretty much everyone that wasn't strictly on the track of making Starco canon at all costs in the later seasons. Kelly wasn't important enough to be shown dating Marco after a certain point and SVTFOE having other relationships be a thing temporarily was just a way for Nefcy and Co. to "will they, won't they" for a few more months until basically making the inevitable happen at the very end.
If I had a nickel for every time a show sets their guy MC up with a black girl, for her to later be part of a failed relationship, while he moves onto the lighter skinned girl, I'd have 25 or 30 cents.
