Too much revisionist bullshit, too much modern politics, terrible cast, special effects that looked worse than the original. There were a couple of crumbs of ideas that might have been able to make something half decent but this movie felt flat and lazy, keanu either couldn't do the martial arts any more or could be bothered. It felt like he was there as a favour to the troony.

This is the best film in the Matrix franchise closely behind the original and the other two don't come fricking close.
As far as the underlying framework goes, it's basically just a fancy remix of the trilogy, but instead of Neo being at the mercy of Deus Ex Machina, his fate is directly in the hands of Trinity. It's very elegant--very powerful stuff. Hylics without a PhD in alchemy simple don't grasp this ancient, magnificent, beautiful sacred drama.
WB asked both Watchowskis to make this every year for literal decades and finally one of them broke down and did it when WB asked right after both their parents died. This movie never had a vision and was only made because one of the directors was depressed and needed something to do (they couldn't get the other sibling to come back), and what they did was spend the first 20 minutes explicitly saying that the movie is soulless slop that didn't have anything to say and didn't need to be made. Part of me admires flipping off the studio so directly, but that doesn't make the movie any better.
Eh, almost all movies are cash grabs to some extent. I wouldn't have even minded that part if it at least had some good action. The problem wasn't that it was soulless. It's that it was soulless *and* boring

matrix 4 transcended slop to become so bad its good. my only gripe is the action scenes are trash. i'll never watch it more than once a decade, but i'll rewatch it in the 2030s with a grin on my face. its the most based queer movie were ever gonna get. bonus points for bugs being so sexy.

I'm not filtered, just pissed that they couldn't stretch the first half hour into the entire movie... the idea of the Matrix being the co-opted creation of a weary Xer forced to work with airhead zoomers was gold. But then the lawyers started pointing at the contract and the satire ("For those who love to eat shit", hobo Merovigian, cringy "cute" robots, etc) had to be spread out across an intentionally cheesy plot.
I don't even care about the "they made the movie bad on purpose as a frick you to WB" although the meta stuff was kinda fun. I unironically like this movie. Seeing Neo going through the motions and being gaslit by his psychiatrist and the normies on a daily basis was great. Also Bugs was cute and I actually would have been okay with her having a bigger role in the movie.

Could have been improved massively with Laurence Fishburne and Hugo Weaving reprising their roles.
