Yeah this. I’m 29 and Lynch’s Dune feels more like “science fiction movie from 1984” than it does Dune to me. The story feels incredibly rushed, and all the gross Lynch stuff that isn’t from the books feels out of place. Also the rain at the end feels silly.

But it's horribly paced, the audience had to read trivia off of a pamphlet they got with their theater ticket and Lynch himself denounces it for how awful it is and how it completely altered the trajectory of his career because he never wanted to redo the disaster that was Dune.

                >"I understood just fine."
One autist 40 years later understands, that's good. The audience clearly didn't, and that's why the movie was a failure because they weren't confident enough in their ability to convey information that they had to hand out pamphlets to people.
                >And Lynch hated production interference
He was so autistic about it that they had someone else edit his movie, no wonder he washed his hands of it.

Yeah, the movie has obvious pacing problems in the second half (thanks to studio interference shrinking movie lenght), but being hard to understand is just not a thing, since it literally jumps straight to the plot points.

It shouldn't have to because it's lunacy in and of itself to cover the entirety of Dune in one motion picture. It's an issue with the medium itself and that's why the other two iterations are two movies on one hand and a miniseries on the other.

You can b***h and complain about quality and source material and staying true to bullshit, but at the end of the day the only thing that actually matters is how much a movie makes. And Marilyn Manson removed two of his ribs so he could suck his own dick.

Lynch didn't hate the theater version, he hated the TV version that he was contractually obligated to cobble together. So much that he forced them to remove his name from the credits and the TV version has "Alan Smithee" directing and "Judas Booth" writing.
Frank Herbert himself liked Lynch's Dune.
And even with the pacing issues (which Villeneuve's version also has) and the required supplementary materials and the infodumping, at least it didn't throw away half the worldbuilding and setup and shit on the other half and make everyone in the movie a drooling moron just so it could have muh powerful wimminz and le religion is le bad.

Editing out shit is part of adapting, both adaptations do the worst of both worlds to the extreme. 1984 adapted too much crap without any of it making a lick of sense and completely ignored any attempt at characterization or context. Dunc adapted too little, which in its own right failed to give context for the shit it did adapt, meanwhile it altered certain elements that had no sense being altered because they would have functioned fine visually.
David Lynch and Dennis Villenueve are fantastic directors who are quite possibly the most moronic screenwriters in history and should never be allowed to put pen to paper. Say what you want about Ridley Scott, at least that crazy motherfricker knew never to write a script. He takes what he gets and rolls with it. If it works, great, if it doesn't frick it, he's got three more films coming out in the next six months.

I would have made changes to the first movie. Cut out a lot of the slow and meandering shots. This isn't Tarkovsky. Dune at it's core is a political drama, that leans into the esoteric a bit.
Have the first movie introduce Feyd in the arena, have it be more clear on why Kynes is the most important person on Arrakis, have the dinner scene, and more character moments to flesh out people. Part 1 should end on the big attack on Atreides, with every single characters fate being a mystery. People need to realize that Denis adapted like 70% of the book in part 1, and then stretched out the last 11 chapters, into a full three act movie, when it was really the third act.

Not him, and no I'm not joking, but remove the Emperor from the film. Retain his overarching presence, but otherwise expunge his physical appearance. Place more emphasis on The Baron and Feyd as the primary and secondary antagonists. Irulan's appearance left to be determined on if the Spacing Guild has any role in the plot, because she has no real purpose otherwise.
        >inb4 b-but that's not how the book goes
That's why it's called adapting, dipshit, and Dune by itself is a crappy book. Without Messiah, and to a lesser extent God Emperor, you've got nothing. So elements from the overarching storyline need to be cut, rewritten, altered, shifted, etc... in order to turn 1,200 pages into a compelling five hour film.
Otherwise it's just loosely connected crap on a screen with no ending and CHARACTERS YELLING BECAUSE THEY HAVE EMOTIONS, I AM EMOTIONAL RIGHT NOW BECAUSE I AM YELLING, CAN YOU TELL?

It's the only metric that matters because cult followings are based on opinion and reevaluation later on. It's worthless in the sense that it doesn't inherently serve a movie's actual purpose: making money.

Exactly. I don't know how anyone can look at DUNC's harkonnens and not laugh in awkward silent confusion. They're a complete trash redesign. Bald, pale, hairless who shout a lot is not interesting or scary. Rabban was always a moron but he's extra moronic in DUNC, just yelling the same generic thing over and over and killing his own guys, and failing at everything. Feyd looks fricking dumb and I couldn't take him seriously whatsoever. The Baron is the weakest of any adaptation ever. He doesn't hold a shadow of a candle to Lynch's version who actually comes off as smart, cruel, disgusting, and like he is into all sorts of vile repugnant crap instead of just bathing in oil

          >Film Piter has no personality what so ever, and just says some exposition
          >Rabban in the book was a surprisingly smart guy in his one scene. Baron is even taken by surprise with how Rabban asks all the right questions. But Thufir convinces the Baron to throw Rabban under the bus, and that's why he gets fricked over.
          >Movie Rabban is an actual incompetent idiot and coward, who fricks up all on his own
          >Book Feyd is an flamboyant playboy gladiator, who always fights dirty, and schemes against the Baron. His weakness however is that he is impatient, and that he doesn't see that Thufir and Baron are both playing him.
          >Movie Feyd is a weird mesh up of being an honorable warrior, and a psychopathic monster at the same time. His honorable side comes out of nowhere, and his final duel with Paul is rubbish. He almost feels like a Feyd fangirls fanfic version of the character.

To simp for vanilla-nova is to expose yourself as an inferior - more chattle than a true human, really. In a just and civilized era, villain-Black person simps would be enslaved and used for the sport of real people. We people are marked by our appreciation of the Lynch adaption of Herbert's work. Compare the 2024 Baron's death to 1984's. One is contrived, generic, and faux-artistic, whereas the Baron's death in 1984 actually IS art. Exquisite, understated, powerful, iconic, and a visual feast worthy of any pre-Raphaelite canvas. To simp for frickernova marks you as what you truly are: inhuman, someone that deserves to be enslaved and used as chattle by an actual person like me

Exactly like yours, you mean? Are you so fricking moronic that you think you and your opinions matter anymore than anyone else's?

Can someone please explain why this spice harvester suddenly exploded before being swallowed by a sandworm?

Because this BOMBED scene symbolizes this whole movie.

The lore dump in second half filtered me hard, but it's still miles better than Dunc.

I love the idea of Lynch's Dune and I love a lot of individual things in it, but actually watching the whole movie is a terrible experience. It fricking sucks, I want to like it so bad but it just doesn't work as a movie. It probably could have been pure kino if we got that extra hour of footage that Lynch intended, which makes me seethe even more when I watch it.

That's why I keep thinking that these guys on here have to be Black personing for being so attached to this movie. I genuinely hope they are, but there's no telling.

I mean, I get that we're just shitting on new dune as a meme, but old dune cant even be saved by LYNCED fanatics.

Weirding modules is nonsense, rain on arrakis would kill the sandworms, the cgi is aged comically, all baron scenes are horribly childish, sting stands out far too much, alia was too young to convincingly act, and most makeup and costumes look terrible. Plus we have weird things like navigators which arent even included in the book. Sure we get a navigator in the 2nd book, but even then, he's described as more or less human with slight modifications like gills n webbed fingers, not a floating fleshlight. Lynced is not exactly a competent director in terms of real stories, he can make psudo arthouse movies but not tell stories.

In terms of sticking to the lore, they're... moderately on point for the first 1/3rd of the book, lets give it an accuracy rating of 75%, but once we enter the last 2/3rds we plummet to 10%, and none of the changes are any good.

      >rain on arrakis would kill the sandworms

Paul literally says he would turn Arrakis into a lush paradise and leave only a thin strip of desert around the Equator as a sandworm preserve in the first fricking book, and then his son actually does later on. It was the goal all along. Do you know why the Fremen were hoarding water?

Puttingaccuracty tothe book aside for a moment...
      >Weirding modules is nonsense,
      nah, it's good
      > rain on arrakis would kill the sandworms,
      see

      >rain on arrakis would kill the sandworms

And it isn't stated anywhere in the movie
      >the cgi is aged comically,
Like all cgi ever, therefore it's not a valid complain. Btw few shitty cgi elements will age better than an entire movie spammed with cgi and filters
      >all baron scenes are horribly childish
      He's a schizo. Not a complain
      >sting stands out far too much,
      Not a complain
      >alia was too young to convincingly act,
      She's fine. Not a complain
      >and most makeup and costumes look terrible.
      Those are actually great
