I used to teach English in Japan
My best joke was one that required both English and Japanese to get >Why can't Japanese men carry 2 snakes? >Because it's [spoilers]TOO HEBI[/spoilers]
My old man Japanese English teachers would break up laughing at it and then go on and explain the jokes to their friends who didn't understand it
Stupid, but made me lol. Have had a similiar problem with a comedy video to the song Killing In The Name Of. The main joke is that "and now you do what they told ya" sounds more or less like "nuggeto watte touchan", which requires way too much explaination to anyone who only speaks one of the languages to be funny.
The whole video is this family around a table, and the son keeps giving chicken nuggets to his dad and his dad keeps breaking them."And now you do what they told ya" sounds a lot like "nuggeto watte touchan" in japanese, which means nugget breaking father. So they get into the rhythm thats playing for the buildup to the chorus, and then the mom goes "Dou tsun da?!" (What are you doing?) Because that also sounds a lot like "Those who died". It's a funny video that makes absolutely no sense to most of the human population.
Did you know Fascism comes from the Italian word for bundle of sticks? It's in reference to the Italian nomenclature for a worker's union or guild based on the concept that people were stronger together than individually much like a bundle of sticks.
I feel bad for the poor sould that had to figure out a translation for XRA. Other show that's almost impossible to translate into other languages without losing half of the jokes is Archer
Off the top of my head, my local dub used to be great at coming up with jokes for untranslatable puns in Family Guy, but they were completely unable to do anything with this.
>Spaniards call Santa Claus Papá Noel
Recent dubs don't give a frick anymore. The Bad Guys holiday special just used "Santa" in the Castilian dub, for example.
I know there are multiple people who have tried to come up with translations for "Whose on First?" for their native languages and they've all failed miserably
Conversely, jokes that could not be made in the English dub. Supposedly, most of the humor in Samurai Pizza cats depended on awful Japanese-language puns, none of which could be translated into English and still make sense in the context of the cartoon. So, the English dubbers just scrapped the entire original Japanese script and made up an entirely different English one.
Sneed's Feed & Seed became a meme because some very dedicated person(or a group) was constantly spamming it on Cinemaphile until other people got conditioned into finding it funny and started spamming it themselves
It's a literal memetic virus
Pretty toothless joke despite its intentions. It ha no more depth than "look, we got away with swearing!". Can't imagine anyone ever laughing at it, at best thinking it cute.
bump
Of course since the dub is shit
If a joke requires you to know the dumb language to understand it it's not a good joke.

Explain it anyway, I like learning about foreign puns.

That is so stupid and I love it.
Yu-gi-oh cards are full of Japanese-English puns in the original language.
i'm still a sucker for anteatereatingant
ctrl + s, anon.
gayot
That's why tom&jerry and Oggy & the wienerroaches are recognized around the world- slapstick is universal form of comedy
>Oggy & the wienerroaches
I loved that show as a kid but I never see anyone mentioning it
It still airs on tv in a lot of third world countries
I live in a third world country and that show is virtually unknown here, as far as I know it only aired in cable television in the early 2000's
I know America is awful, but should it really be considered 3rd-world?
I'd rather live in some Baltimore-tier shithole city in America than where I am right now
What a bundle of sticks.

The US government loves the fasces as well.
Silence redditor
>stop noticing things
are you saying that fascists are the true homosexuals
Not true, the fascio was used by the Roman Empire

This scene would be hard as frick: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G_XkWI5gJnY
why archer? I assume it's because H. Jon Benjamin's in it so there must be a lot of improv right
Not a show, but most Marx Brothers movies would also be insanely hard to translate into other languages without losing the majority of the comedy
some of them BARELY make sense in the english dub
How did they even manage to do it at all?
>fr gayot, a bundle of sticks
fricking zoomers
so, puns?

Any joke that associates chickens with chickenpox and Santa Claus with claustrophobia
Claustrophobia still works in spanish
Spaniards call Santa Claus Papá Noel. Dunno about latam though.

There are only two comedy anime that are watchable for those that aren't fluent in japanese. Cromartie Highschool and Danshi Koukosei no Nichijou.
>that Simpsons joke that became even better in the Spanish dub thanks to the dubbing in Terminator 2
how so?

Arnold says sayonara baby instead of hasta la vista baby
mexicans are huge weebs so it fits
Sneed
(Unironically)
Sneed's Feed & Seed became a meme because the joke was so bad and convoluted, that unless you do mental gymnastics, it doesn't make sense.
This.
It was Chuck's Feed & Seed, dumbasses.
I thought it was a Chuck E. Cheese's

I thought it was just a convoluted way to give the middle finger to the jannies
It became that too
