I think Indiana Jones and The Last Crusade is a perfect example of this. It's the weakest of the series. Rehashed Ark with more chases and less archeology. You can skip everything up to last 20 minutes and miss absolutely nothing really important to the plot. Also it's borderline comedy between Ford and Connery. And for some reasons this piece of crap is considered one of the best by some people.

I've been telling Cinemaphile this for years but the majority of films with Queen on the soundtrack are actually mediocre as hell. I'm not knocking Queen or anyone's taste, but the fricking music unironically turns things into Kino. If I ever made a movie and I wanted to guarantee it was a hit I'd throw some Queen in there.

Conan the barbarian, it has a nice score and some ok scenes. It may very well be the "best" film lf it's type.
But i felt the film had a lack of scenes, it really feels like a drawn out tv episode. Conan hardly fights in it too, his co stars have more action.

Only memorable scene is where all the glass blows out as he is receiving 'The Quickening'.

The show was the first time for me where an important character died. Duncan's wife was killed in a hostage situation iirc. Or it was cancer, I forget. He wasn't able to save her. Then you had Duncan, on his boat, looking through his library while 'Dust In The Wind' from Kansas played. It would probably look like shit if I rewatch it now, but at the time it made an impact on me. This was before it became fashionable to kill off main characters. So it had an impact on lil' old me. It's a great film but I always felt the ending was way too rushed and threw things out of the window. All of John Doe's kill were basically proto-Jigsaw and then he just goes on and murders an innocent woman? I get that he was basically making himself a martyr for the sin of envy but I still can't stomach it. I guess they did that because in typical Hollywood fashion they feared people wouldn't despise him enough.
      >the prostitute
She was intented as the victim for Lust. The guy who was traumatized probably was her client and sought her out so doing that to him didn't go against his beliefs. He always left the others with a choice. The Sloth guy was still alive if mangled beyond belief. Killing Tracy just threw all that out of the window and it made his speech in the car completely null and void. It felt like they didn't have a good way to end it and just went for the shock value. Also, the film had a very comfy and grimy aeshtetic which is completely undone when they go to the desert and it looks like a Michael Bay film. I never liked the ending. Just nonsensical grimdark shit.

Eh, it isn't high brow cinema but trash? Certainly not. It had a great soundtrack, good enough direction, solid acting (yes, Lambert was strange but he did well in my eyes) and had a good story amped by a very hopeful message and ending.

It is a shit movie. And Christopher Walken is a terrible actor. But the premise of Highlander is good.

I don't agree with your assesments of the lead or the movie but I'll agree that is a great premise with loads of potential that the sequels shat the bed on delivering massively. I always liked the theory that the immortals are Lucifer's legion of fallen angels who God has allowed only one to be redeemed and is the reason they can't fight on holy ground dedicated to God and the Quickening is sort of them tasting the godly powers of being an angel again. Maybe that headcanon has a few holes but it's better than them being aliens or some shit.

The third one had Mario Von Peebles in it no? It was called Highlander: The Sorcerer.

            Anonymous

The DVD commentary on 'New Jack City' was interesting. For instance: the opening had a chopper and a zooming in shot, to show people this was a movie with a budget. Ice-T was a cop. Snipes wasn't as big a star as he became but there's that scene where he got beaten up and he went all out. Not worried about being too cool for school.

Snipes is better than Washington. It's not a contest, but yes he was.

The movie itself is, as you would expect, quite shit. But it was a different time. Only reason you'd watch it is because of Snipes his charisma. Chris Rock is in it too. As a junkie moron.

Ghostbusters legitimately revolutionized comedy movies and it gets a ton of its deserved praise from that, but I would agree with someone that doesn't like it 'as a movie' so to speak. What’s the cut off year for stuff to be considered a classic? One guy here mentioned The Irishman but I’d say that’s too recent to be considered a classic.
I know this board likes being hyperbolic so most movies mentioned here aren’t actually shit but underwhelming considering their critical reception, in any case, I asked about the cut off year for classics since I’m more commonly disappointed with well-received modern flicks than old ones. If I had to go with modern flicks it’d probably be something like Her or Little Miss Sunshine, as for older flicks, stuff like Rocky 1 and 4, The Wizard of Oz and several old Disney films, I also kinda have to agree about the original Star Wars trilogy, the first one and even ESB to an extent are actually pretty boring.

        >What’s the cut off year for stuff to be considered a classic?
It's the same as the retro video game argument. No one really knows because there's two distinct groups of people that think it should mean different things. Does 'classic' refer to a specific era, or is an evolving term and new years are eligible as time passes? Irishman, I'd definitely say is too new unless someone specifically calls it a 'modern classic.' Personally, I think about ten years is a good cutoff. Anything newer than that suffers from extreme recency bias if we're talking about top ten lists or whatever.

Judging movies from before your time through your undoubtedly modern lens and sensibilities is why you don't enjoy movies older than you. You have yet to understand that most art and movies are products of their time. The fact that any are timeless is amazing, but most never will be.

A great example of an art form that in it's more modern capacity will never be timeless is music. Music now won't last like music from the 60s-80s.

For example, Highlander came out in 1986, in a time where Hollywood was looking to foreign nations for themes and ideas. You get things like Highlander or Crocodile Dundee. They aren't 'bad' movies, they just aren't timeless movies like 12 Angry Men or It's a Wonderful Life.

Hate this. The critics raved about it, but I thought it stunk.

DiCaprio gurns his way thru the running-time. Matt Damon is too lightweight. And Nicolson looks like he is suffering with haemorrhoids.

Millennial here, and thought I might aswell ask for the boomer perspective, but is it me or do a lot of fantasy movies from before the 90s seem to have nonsensical dialogue? I noticed this in stuff like Legend and Willow, I don’t think that’s necessarily a flaw of the movies in and of themselves, as they’re probably written that way to add to the whimsical aspect of their settings, but I noticed that kind of writing has been dropped since for whatever reason, which I don’t think is necessarily good or bad, it’s just that whenever it happened it only made me wonder what the frick was it that the characters were trying to say

I don’t think it was awful but definitely massively overrated, perhaps one of the most overrated movies of all time

Frick you, Casablanca is the opposite. I went in expecting another overhyped turd of classic Hollywood, the same way The Wizard of Oz or Gone With the Wind deserve none of their praise, but was greeted by one of the best fricking films of its era. Casablanca is a legit 11/10.

Second time I see someone mentioning the wizard of Oz in this thread, and while I respect the technical landmark it was for cinema, I don’t think it held up very well at all, it’s literally a baby movie, on a similar level to Sesame Street, Barney and Teletubbies, so seeing adults praising it as some all time masterpiece always feels weird to me when it should really be lumped alongside mid-tier disney flicks

Bro, just rewatch the first 20 minutes of Gladiator and pay attention to how the dialogue of Maximus and Marcus Aurelius explains everything: The battle you just watched, why Maximus fights, why Maximus wants to go back home, the situation in Rome, why Maximus decides to be a gladiator instead of just giving up, why and how Commodus seized power, why Maximus fights so hard... it's mind-blowing.

This is one of the stupidest, boring, and most pretentious films I ever had the displeasure of sitting through.

I left about 45 min into the film and have not finished it since.

Highlander is a weird movie because it has a lot of good elements but for some reason they decided to make a Frenchman that couldn't act or speak English their lead character

Why the frick does Connor have such a heavy Eastern European accent if his character is from medieval Scotland kek. He’s likable in this though

Lambert was very charismatic, but he couldn't act for shit. Easily the worst part of every movie he's starred in.
