They're pulpy spy thrillers, none of are exactly 'high art'
That being said Casino Royale is great

The Bond series is basically its own genre. You don't compare Bond movies to other movies, it's very self-contained and self-referential. But the series has been a staple for 60 years now and a ton of other franchises like Batman and Bourne have taken cues from it.

None of what you said is true, though. All of them are either passable or incredibly kino. You can't go wrong with any of them, except anything Graig did after CR. They're a monument without compare in movie history.

I'd argue it's easily the biggest franchise by it's mythic status. Bond saying his name is ranked as the most iconic movie line of all time for a reason. Every guy on this planet wants to be James Bond. He's the ultimate male fantasy.

Everything up to Berry jumping off the cliff in DAD is enough to keep it from being considered awful.
The gritty brutal North Korea stuff is great.

The Korea stuff is why I put it there. So much wasted potential. I don't hate it by ANY stretch, that's reserved for the Graig movies from Skyfall and up and perhaps on second thought I regret putting it there but yeah I really think a more gritty but not reddit gritty Piercebond movie would have been kino as all hell. The blue balls still hurt to this day. I like the theme song though. It's very sovlful in a strange way.

I still maintain that DAD is good for as long as Halle Berry isn't on screen. Everything else about it feels like a return to early Bond (although maybe a bit too much Moore silliness for some people's liking), a last hurrah before the dreary Craig era attempts to ground Bond in realism.
The spy car duel, the fencing scene and the villain are all fun, but I also agree that it could have gone the other way to be more of a gritty movie and been good too.

There is not a single fully bad Bond film.

    > Dr No
    Decent to Good

    > From Russia with Love
    Good to Very Good

    > Goldfinger
    Very Good to Near Great

    > Thunderball
    Good

    > You Only Live Twice
    Very Good

    > On Her Majesty's Secret Service
Very Good, might have been the best film of the series had Connery played Bond. Everything around Lazy was really solid.

    > Diamonds Are Forever
    Ok / Meh to Decent

    > Never Say Never Again
    Weak to Poor

    > Live & Let Die
    Very Good

    > The Man with the Golden Gun
    Ok / Meh

    > The Spy Who Loved Me
    Great

    > Moonraker
Decent to Good-ish (first half is solid & the score is fantastic)

    > For Your Eyes Only
    Good to Very Good

    > Octopussy
    Good

    > A View to a Kill
    Decent

    > The Living Daylights
    Very Good

    > Licence to Kill
    Very Good

      > Goldeneye
      Near Great

      > Tomorrow Never Dies
      Good

      > The World is Not Enough
      Very Good

      > Die Another Day
      Good

      > Casino Royale
      Great

      > Quantum of Solace
Decent to Good-ish (I think it's really underrated but they still severely wasted Gemma & the villain is weak)

      > Skyfall
      Very Good to Great-ish

      > Spectre
      Good

It's fricking terrible, easily the worst Bond but otherwise you're right about the rest.

There isn't a single fully great Bond film either.

As another anon said it's in its own niche of campy glowprop movies

No, a few of them are great if cinema is respected as the simple and sincere art form that it is and not some pompous psychological masturbation session.

      >Decent to Good
wtf does this shit mean. either you think it's decent or you think it's good. and how are you differentiating decent and good anyway. they're synonyms. use a numerical rating like a civilized human being.

        My rating system is...

        Amazing
        Strongly great
        Great
        Very good
        Good
        Decent
        Ok / meh
        Weak
        Poor
        Bad
        Horrible

        >either you think it's decent or you think it's good. and how are you differentiating decent and good anyway. they're synonyms.
I have always perceived decent as being slightly worse than fully good.

A lot of them suffer from being overly long and rather dull, especially prevalent in the Roger Moore era.

You can't say this about the Moore movies when practically all of the Craig films are over two and a half hours long and dull as dogshit for most of the runtime.

This. Soulless modernity and woke crap. Moore's movies are absolute cinematic soul. He's responsible for saving the franchise from obscurity after Sean due to being so fitting and his movies absolute joys to watch. I'm more of a Fleminggay hence my love of Dalton but Moore is great to watch. Wonderful movies.

This. Reddit contrarianism and stupidity. To doubt James Bond's place as the top of the mountain in movie history is as dumb as doubting the color of the sky. The mount rushmore of movies are the guys who played Bond. Cinematic legend at it's finest.

Other Anons have said what I'll say; it's because women write it now.

From modern Bond on (i.e. Craig), they have deconstructed his character, making all the things he was admired for now ashamed for. No one asked for this and no one wanted this except women. As a result, it is shit.

No longer is it awful due to bad writing, unbelievable characters or situations, or too man gadgets that save the day. It's now awful because the character himself is being criticized and ridiculed for what he represents: the ultimate male fantasy.

Let it all rot, and let the modern writers starve due to their lack of talent.
