Between LoSH, JLI, and maybe Ambush Bug Giffen's honestly had a very large influence on me and the style of superhero stories I like and how I write in general.

Reminder that The Great Darkness Saga happened at the height of the Legion's popularity and Darkseid being the villain was a huge twist. That story and its popularity is more or less the entire reason that Darkseid is now more or less DC's final boss, without it (and without Giffen and Levitz) he would have remained yet another of Kirby's semi-obscure 1970s creations.

Of course he's responsible for reviving cosmic Marvel as well.

This is no exaggeration. The Great Darkness Saga both solidified Legion of Super-Heroes as DC's #2 seller after Titans, and turned Darkseid into the BIG FRICKIN' DEAL type character that he remains to this day.

Frick man, I knew about Lobo and Rocket Raccoon, but not Darkseid. I really need to read cosmic DC and Marvel. Lobo and Darkseid in Superman TAS were spot-on and I could use more of them in the comics. Though Legion seems a little intimidating to read since it's pretty old.

          Anonymous

Funny how he later grew to regret Darkseid's overuse as an alien invader and created Lady Styx so that other writers could just use her instead if they didn't have a really great Darkseid story to tell, but in the end he was the only one who did.

Didn't know that, is the JLI translation any good? I'm curious, amigo.

              Anonymous

The one that made it famous was pretty divisive because the translator(who went on to became one of the biggest comics "journalist" in the country) made it very local, and even translated a lot of the superhero names, like blue beetle was named "bicho azul", but some people remember it very fondly, it was basically the foundational stone for the "modern" superhero comics fanbase here in Argentina. And to this day DC still outsells marvel. Ovnipress(the local DC publisher) just published pic related like a month ago

                Anonymous

I should check it out just for curiosity then, I heard of Blue Beetles old translated name before , surprised that it was from JLI. I once had the silly idea that they should have gone with something even more silly like Blue Bicho.

Eisner award winning comic book creator Keith Giffen is probably best known for his work on the Legion of Superheroes or his Justice League International, but he also created Lobo, co-created Rocket Raccoon, put together the team that became the modern Guardians of the Galaxy, and more. The man put a good 40 years into the comic book industry and created a bunch of lasting additions to pop culture. He even lived to see Jaime Reyes on the big screen. His work should be celebrated. i need to know which comic this is

            [...]
damn, i thought this was DnA who wrote these

The Rick Jones Genis-Vell Run post Immortal Hulk Written by PAD, is not bad but it was cut short.
It turns out Death wasn't only dying from her previous run at Jane Foster's comic, she was tired of being Death, Marlo Returns as Rick is back as Captain Marvel due to him finding the nega bands to save his life after his encounter with the green door thanks to Sterns left his body phase out of existence, Also the Life entity exists, and she is a housewife Milf Black woman who really cares for her, and works on a Flower and Gardening Store, and JAzinda is revealed to be alive after the events of SWORD taking her captive since she escaped and Abigail Brand is a complete moron.
Death almost dies again due to Vox Supreme almost taking her and Marlo taking control of her powers, but is restored by her sister Life and she reveals that she can't take being death anymore after all that happened to her recently, on which Marlo, Jazindam Life and Rick seeing that she is speaking the truth, Marlo knowing how Death feels asks to be her replacement while Death finally gets her rest and retirement, on which Rick and Gennis reluctantly agrees knowing that they wont see her again for a longtime.
Death as of now is retired and since Marlo took her place, she obviously changed sides with Marlo on the living world, and living on Rick Gennis house since then, which is implied.

They wrote the ongoing, but Giffen set the team up by ripping off plot points from his event Invasion! back in 1989.
In both titles, a person assembles a team in a prison and help stop the Dominator/Phalanx threat. After the conflict, the leader establishes a space policing force.
L.E.G.I.O.N. was incredibly cynical and a for-profit police force however.

This guy was never properly appreciated, the love for JLI feels so artificial to me and it annoys me that it completely overshadowed his wonderful works in the 90s that were pretty much all canceled early. Feels like it has a lot of runs that never read the run or never read a lot of it and just saw random funny panels and pages. And I feel like there's too big of a gap between people that like LoSH or JLI and people that like Giffen in general. Couple of tears back on Cinemaphile people here weren't even giving him credit for Annihilation, DnA was getting all the praise for being the fathers of that era.

They're doing a Lobo Compendium some time soon, aren't they?

          Anonymous

I don’t buy omnis or compendiums or anything like that. They’re moronic. Hard covers and anything over 600 pages isn’t for reading let alone with comics not made for that format you lose a quarter of the page.

Anyone that buys compendiums automatically comes off as a casual who just wants things for a shelf or table. Like a coffee table book.

            Anonymous

Compendiums aren't hardcover. It's a floppy softcover format DC's started doing more of recently. The ones I've got are all a good size and weight (though the two Starman ones are probably a bit too big, and I think they were some of the first they put out). I've had no issues with gutter loss on any of them. No idea how big the Lobo Compendium will be, but hopefully it'll be well put together like the others have been so far.
            >Anyone that buys compendiums automatically comes off as a casual who just wants things for a shelf or table. Like a coffee table book.
Well I can guarantee you that I read the comics I buy. And the majority of people (and the anons over in /shelf/ threads) who get omnis are actually buying them to read them, rather than just collecting.
The real shitty collectors are usually those whales over on reddit who any and every oversized hardcover simply because it's got a Marvel or DC logo on the spine, and they think the omnis will look real good wrapped up in plastic on their Ikea shelves sitting next to all their funko pops

            [...]

There's a very big difference between genuinely having a "dissenting opinion," and acting like an edgy teenage homosexual in a thread announcing someone's death

Well I’ll be, I thought compendiums were HC. What even is the difference between a trade and compendium at this point lol

I still buy mostly floppies. Recently snagged the lobo infanticide back issues actually.

                Anonymous

I think the idea is that compendiums fit way more issues into a single book than TPBs, which usually just collect a handful of issues/a single arc or two. This Sandman Mystery Theatre Compendium collects half of that whole run (pics aren't mine btw, I snagged them from Matt Wagner's twitter after a google search). I can't find any information about how big the Lobo Compendium will be or what issues will be collected, but seeing as it's being called the Big Fraggin' Compendium it'll probably be a decent size.
They're honestly becoming my favourite format. A compendium nowhere near as expensive as an omnibus (the RRP is £50 in the UK, but ordering online means you can usually get it for £35), they're not as heavy, the paper they use is quite nice, and DC are using them to collect a lot of good 90s stuff that would otherwise go under the radar.

                >foreward by that dude who killed his wife and was once a tertiary character on a sitcom
Only “foreward by Bendis” or “foreward by Kelly Sue Deconnick” is more of no-buy for me than some fat comedian like smith or Oswalt.

Why not get a foreward by the creators? Most things are a decade or more removed some new perspective from them would be nice.

Yeah, it's kinda crap. Oswalt has nothing to do with Sandman Mystery Theatre aside from being a fan.
Still, at least it's not as bad as my copy of The Incal having a foreword by Bendis AND coming with a sticker on the plastic wrapping proclaiming it's soon to be a film from acclaimed director Taika Waititi

I thank god that the sticker was only on the plastic wrapping

How’s the binding hold up on a jernt like that? Otherwise I’m not hating the format as long as you don’t have the problem of fold loss to the pages. I don’t really resell or anything so I’m not too hung up on spine wear.

I haven't had any problems with the binding on my compendiums so far, nor have I heard of anyone else having problems. They seem pretty sturdy.

You're thinking of omnibuses. Omnibus collectors are what you described. Compendiums are usually medium sized paperbacks and they're well priced for the amount of pages. Meanwhile Marvel was at one point slapping omnibus on 400 page hardcovers and charging full price.

The Great Darkness Saga was such a well done story, it and the iconic reveal cemented LOSH as one of DC's biggest titles in the early to mid 80s alongside NTT and stopped Darkseid from becoming forgotten alongside the rest of Kirby's fourth world stuff and tbh most of Kirby's DC stuff.

He got interested in another artist's art and adapted it a little too well. Groth accused him of plagiarizing because Giffen was one of the biggest names in cape comics and Groth is a miserable frick who hates capes for "ruining" comics.

Giffen was a bit of an art chameleon in his career. Way back when he was working on The Defenders early in his career, he was told to draw like Kirby/Buscema and thus his work looked a lot like that. Giffen's own art style then changed even further away from Munoz as time went on.
DC pulling Giffen off art is a bit of a myth. He continued to write and draw even during those years where he was "exiled." He specifically did the bulk of the art for the Five Years Later Legion of Super-Heroes volume.

Defenders #48 with Keith Giffen and Dan Green. When Giffen was working with Klaus Janson earlier in the run, the art looked substantially different.

One of the funniest changes is that years after he did the art for the Great Darkness Saga, he was hired to redo some of the art. During the original publication, he did not do the art for the small back up stories (LoSH usually ran like 3 stories at a time under Levitz/Giffen). When DC decided that The Great Darkness Saga would be one of their first trades in 1989, they had Giffen redo the art for a story that he had originally not done the art for.
The result was one half of the issue looking like this....

and the other half of the issue looking like his 1989 style.
Then with how the trade is collected, the rest of the art looks like his 1982 work.

You know I'm starting to suspect Cinemaphile doesn't actually read comics and therefore doesn't know who Giffen was

You only now figured out that this board today only exists for people to do circle jerk threads where they whine about things they aren’t familiar with? The years of bait, endless whining and largely outright hostility to everything has driven out people who actually know and care about things. Now it’s about outrage making threads about black actors and gay/trans characters appearing in one comic

Taking the wrapping off and reading it would only make them decrease in value. It's sensible in a way to buy the book to support it and then just pirate the high quality digital scans/rips.

                >I do read them. They were all bagged like that from a move plus it keeps the silverfish out.
Plus, those plastic bags very clearly aren't the sealed tight wrapping that unread omnibuses come in

Most admit that they only read about half of their shelves. Couple of threads back some guy that like 15 Conan omnis but had never read a single one.

These are both exaggerations. Some guy said he was a half a Conan omni behind, others ‘admitted’ they have a backlog. Everyone who reads any kind of physical books has a backlog.
But keep on with your bullshit.

... frick, I got a little time to kill, might as well post this script Giffen wrote for Marvel Romance Redux, a highly bizarre experiment in the 00s where a bunch of modern Marvel writers rewrote old romance comics with all kinds of weird and wonderful new stories. How weird, you ask?
