It's not just him. Everyone in the film looks like abominations. The backlash to conner would be non-existent if he looked attractive. This art style did not do him any favors.
There's only so many black man archetypes you can have in media. There's the annoying hotep a la Huey Boondocks, there's the scary deepvoiced durag thug, there's the dishevelled rasta pothead, there's the inspirational black youth, the loud extremely gay black man, and the soft spoken liberal arts major hispter "should've been white" black man.
There used to be more (80s pimp, token tech savvy black guy, fat bald biggie smalls type,...) but since you need more than three races in media they've been coopted by other races.
Since the writers are all white liberals and most of these tropes are seen as harmful and racist on twitter, you can only use either the inspirational black youth or the pastel-clothed hipster liberal. Inspirational blacks are exclusively female now since it ticks more boxes (Miles Morales -> Riri Williams), so every black guy needs to be a hipster or a comical deconstruction of another archetype (well meaning thug that just looks scary, snoop dogg but he only sells and never smokes,...)
Hope this helps.
Kinda a shame since I wanted to have a character in a thing I’m writing who was a bombastic adult hero with a heart of gold. You know, the type who rushes into a fire to save people and doesn’t hesitate to fistfight criminals to protect someone, but sometimes the enthusiasm causes more problems than it solves
Thanks for saying that actually. I don’t get why people fall on racial archetypes so often, just write people

Stereotypes usually exist because there was some level in truth in them when they were created. They're oversimplifications that are stuck in those time periods, but at some point they were based on the way people actually perceived each other.
That said mass media makes it possible to basically force stereotypes into existence which is pretty fricked.

Yeah I suppose that’s true. And to an extent I guess I also somewhat use stereotypes, though I think I’m more geared to using existing archetypes and having fun with em. Regardless I wish we could reach a point of just getting along and having fun together
It's the easiest way to score diversity points without having to include a character that is stereotypically black. A safe, non-threatening, nerdy young man who is clever and smart, but not overbearing, because angry black men are terrifying to the sort of urbanite white progressives that never shut the frick up about wanting more diversity, but can't stand to be in the same room as a black person.
most people who don't like this guy, agree that they wouldn't mind if he looked better, "at least" like how he looked in the concept designs. Now if Ruby were white...
>HEY YOU LIKE THAT LESBIAN SHIP?
YES! >GOOD WE'LL PUT A LESBIAN SHIP THEN!
YES! >BETWEEN TWO RANDOS THE main character GETS BLACKED AND THE SECONDARY GETS THROWN IN JAIL! >WAIT WHY IS OUR MOVIE FLOPPING???!"!!!
Brain damage at its finest, frick Dreamworks, I hate alphabet homosexuals but this was probably the first time that I've seen people liking a queer ship, and they just shitted on it.
I saw one or two trailers and/or teasers... was there even a remote implication of the kraken and the mermaid ending as a couple? Someone please remind me.
>People are so acclimated to stupid subversions and sympathetic villains they literally can't comprehend a villain just being a villain.
That said there's nothing wrong with personally shipping the hero and the villain, but come on.

no one actually expected them to become a couple, but they figured that they would be at least friends by the end movie.
However not only was there no redemption, but also the villain turned out to be an adult who only pretended to be a teenager
>the villain turned out to be an adult who only pretended to be a teenager
Kek, I can only imagine meltdown the twitter yurigays must be having right now >"must ship girl with girl" >"must not shop underage with adult"
>Chelsea is made to apologize to everybody on Twitch for nearly genociding them and they're all cool with it.
Redemption will come in the inevitable direct-to-streaming sequel.
>However not only was there no redemption, but also the villain turned out to be an adult who only pretended to be a teenager
Is her adult form at least hot?
>the only problem would be the hair, but, aside that, it's an interesting design.
It's basically the bog standard male CG protagonist but with darker skin and really ugly hair
He looks like a pear and his nose looks like another pear growing on top of the first pear and his hair look like a cross between a 2 dollar wig and a worn out mop
Hmm, i doubt it, the general public never cared about this movie in the first place and they would have definitely banned this movie in different countries had they actually done a main homosexual couple. I mean, how many animated movies with homosexual couples being the main couples out there? Is just much better in the long run, from a business perspective to go for the heterosexual, wholesome, and NORMAL straight relationship
His voice and attitude are cool. That said, i don't really care about the romance in this movie because why would i? Just saying having normal couples is just to be expected and better than having homosexual ones
he still scares me
>and stop looking at me with those big ol' eyes!
I tried to fix him
Not enough
It's like there isn't enough room between his eye sockets
If you told me this was the antagonist I would believe you.
What if the last thing those submarine guys see before imploding is this guy looking through their window?
It's not just him. Everyone in the film looks like abominations. The backlash to conner would be non-existent if he looked attractive. This art style did not do him any favors.
It's the nose.
It's not one thing. He's a mess.
Terraformars but zoomer
What the frick is that?
Is that supposed to be a human?
Genuine question.
Really depends on your views on genetics
Is this a mammal in the family Hominidae or some sea creature that just looks humanoid?
>Why does this cartoon character have exaggerated anatomy?
>exaggerated and being fricking hideous is the same
>when Ruby Gillman looks more human than the actual humans
The Addams Family animated movie suffered this too, where you have the Addams looking more normal than the people around them.
Why do all liberal black guys look like the dude from The Good Place

Dude nothing’s stopping you

Still reeling. Why was this character so fricking UGLY?
These do NOT look like character renders from a movie from only 4 years ago, what the frick. They look like old ass animated clipart goblins.
Feather duster ahh
most people who don't like this guy, agree that they wouldn't mind if he looked better, "at least" like how he looked in the concept designs. Now if Ruby were white...
I bet the film would have done better if the entire cast of characters looked as appealing as Chelsea
>HEY YOU LIKE THAT LESBIAN SHIP?

YES!

They weren’t lesbian in the first place yuricuck.

>>GOOD WE'LL PUT A LESBIAN SHIP THEN!
This part never happened outside of your headcanon.
I saw one or two trailers and/or teasers... was there even a remote implication of the kraken and the mermaid ending as a couple? Someone please remind me.
Zero. Just coomers being coomers and two girls standing next to each other having a rivalry is what they latched onto.
no one actually expected them to become a couple, but they figured that they would be at least friends by the end movie.
However not only was there no redemption, but also the villain turned out to be an adult who only pretended to be a teenager
Hot.
>the villain turned out to be an adult who only pretended to be a teenager
you have my attention

Anon please
Does she flirt with Ruby's crush
This is very important
Hollywood hates gingers
So much wasted potential
>However not only was there no redemption, but also the villain turned out to be an adult who only pretended to be a teenager
Is her adult form at least hot?
I haven't seen the film but I always assumed the mermaids and krakens had to unite against this abominations before he eats them all.
I don't give a frick what he looks like
Do Ruby and not Ariel fight over him in some way
This is important
Why is it so important to you
Why do you think
I need more cuckquean content
This is the ugliest movie I've seen in a while.
Looks awfully familiar
>Homosexual couple hooking up in an animated movie
That would be a first
What the frick kind of monster is he supposed to be?
Some kind of mix between a sea urchin and a blob fish?
Black
Honestly, the only problem would be the hair, but, aside that, it's an interesting design.
> Obligatory gay for diversity points and gays
Gays doesn't make the script better, you gay-kun.
>the only problem would be the hair, but, aside that, it's an interesting design.
It's basically the bog standard male CG protagonist but with darker skin and really ugly hair
>a homie named Connor
That's more unrealistic than the Kraken
If the story had the mermaid and kraken team up and had any sort of twist in the story maybe it wouldn’t be so shit
Nah, it still would have been shit, the only difference is that you would also be defending it since it appeals to your shipping fetish.
He looks like a pear and his nose looks like another pear growing on top of the first pear and his hair look like a cross between a 2 dollar wig and a worn out mop
If the redhead notAriel was a cute boy but also still the villian this movie would be flipping numbers
Hmm, i doubt it, the general public never cared about this movie in the first place and they would have definitely banned this movie in different countries had they actually done a main homosexual couple. I mean, how many animated movies with homosexual couples being the main couples out there? Name one person who actually likes the black love interest, you don't count because you're clearly shitposting.
I like the voice and easy-going character. The face is a big ouch.
His voice and attitude are cool. That said, i don't really care about the romance in this movie because why would i? Just saying having normal couples is just to be expected and better than having homosexual ones
I don't know who or what that is or what it's from.
He looks like someone took a normal character and distorted the shit out of it in Photoshop.
