You can't blame Viggo for this. It was a reshoot many months after. He had lost his perfect accent and had no time to get it back.

      Anonymous

Why did they need to reshoot it? That would be like if Justice League had a scene where Ben Affleck said "Can you at least point me to Atlantis?" and he became noticeably fatter from one second to the next.

        Anonymous

That scene itself wasn't reshot, it was a totally new addition done during the reshoots.

Probably something to do with PJ walking back from making Aragorn fight Sauron in person. He later got replaced by a generic troll with CGI pasted over the already shot scene.

That would have been incredibly stupid if Aragorn had fought Sauron so that increases my respect for Jackson for having the sense to walk it back.

Slop is something generic and bland made whitout love, care or passion with the sole purpose of making money with the least amount of effort possible.
Even if you fundamentally opose everything that Tolkien and LoTR represent, you can't say with a straight face that Tolkien didn't pour his soul into those books, you are free to not like them, but can't say they weren't made with passion, they are the complete opposite of slop

Yeah, I remember those parts, but that was too much of a teenage rebellion take on LotR, but first book about them just adventuring to find out what is happening is fairly good.

              Anonymous

Pretty much, yeah. The same thing happened in WW1. The Allied propaganda told us Kaiser Wilhelm wanted to “rule the world” and made up atrocity stories about the “Rape of Belgium.”

Then the war ends, the governments shut down their wartime propaganda, and people learn that WW1 was a lot more complicated, and mostly based on lies. Suddenly the citizens of the Allied powers are anti-war and anti-government. Big problem when they try to start WW2.

So after the Allies manage to start and eventually win WW2, they don’t make the same mistake about shutting down the wartime propaganda departments. So that’s why in 2023 kids in school are still reading propaganda from 1940 about how Hitler wanted to “rule the world” and made-up atrocity stories about the “Holocaust.” Because they learned that once you put the propaganda out there you can’t back down, or the people become harder to control.

It wasn't. I only claim he's a war criminal because I want to know where people draw the line when it comes to protagonists' behaviour. I'm still waiting for a satisfactory explanation for why killing an unarmed messenger is acceptable behaviour from a supposed hero while, say, him killing Orc women and children is not.

NTA but I would contend that's entirely why they removed this scene from the film, they filmed it and then when they were editing the film they realized it didn't make any sense for Aragorn to do something so dishonorable so they took it out.

Nor was Nazi Germany. Does that mean we shouldn't view their actions as morally wrong? If a world leader today repudiated the conventions, invaded a neighbouring country, and began systematically exterminating every man, woman, and child in that country, would you shrug your shoulders and say, 'Well he hasn't broken any law'? What a morally bankrupt standard.

I'm not sure if you are being sarcastic but that is legitimately happening right now and this site is like the number one place to find people who will not only shrug their shoulders but will in fact actively cheer it on. The fact that it's backfiring on the invading country and they're actually losing is one of the few good things that has happened on this planet in the last few years. Makes me think, maybe humanity's not so fricked after all, it can actually still happen that a world leader does something morally reprehensible and is punished for it.

You've completely ignored the substance of my argument. If Russia—which is what I assume you're referring to—officially repudiated the Geneva Conventions, would its actions in Ukraine cease to be evil and become morally neutral? Would you argue, 'Well Russia hasn't technically broken the law' or would you recognize that as a morally bankrupt position? Now apply the same logic to Rohan.

Keep in mind that Viggo Mortensen is American and Americans cannot do British accents.

His British accent is passable for the majority of the film tbh, the other Americans in the cast do a decent job as well.

I actually don't think I've ever seen any of the extended editions aside from Fellowship, but I've seen so many of the scenes from the extended edition that I feel like I have. But I think whenever they show these movies on TV and stuff they use the theatrical cut.

I do enjoy that there was a period of time where people would watch anything with Aiden Gillen in it and meme the hell out of his scenes. Problem is he mainly does a bunch of artsy independent films that would bore Cinemaphile so they lost interest fast. Skarch probably only happened because it was an action movie for kids.

Why are "muh gray morality" so fixated on orc killing? There are entire human nations working for Sauron, and Tolkien does humanize them.

Like, in the aftermath of the siege of Helm's Deep Rohan spares Dunlending captives instead of slaughtering them. Or when Frodo and Sam encounter the Haradrim and they contemplate what drove them to this fate. Gray morality fricks completely ignore them and lump together with literal demonic creatures.
