I think it’s just that at that point oftentimes the filmmakers are just out of ideas and don’t have the same creative spark that led to the first film become a hit in the first place. Notice how many third entries in famous trilogies are essentially a remake of the first movie in a lot of ways
Die Hard 3 is a great film untill they find out Simon's riddles are bullshit. After that it turns into a pile of shit. And the ending is anti-climactic as frick. At least Die Hard 2 is consistent the whole way through.

I fell asleep during godfather so I never finished it. I think I've seen all of star wars via osmosis. Hell, I didn't even know there were 3 superman movies unless we are counting justice league.
