Qui Gon had to die to set up Obi Wan not being really ready to teach a padawan.

Why did the council let him then?

          Anonymous

because he was going to leave the jedi order and teach anakin regardless of what the council said
so it's better to just allow him and keep on eye that they dont stray

and allows obi to grow over the next 2 films

Sure, but I think they still were leaving Ford's departure up in the air. I don't know all the behind the scenes lore but why is Lando flying the Falcon with Chewie in RotJ? Just feels weird, like they didn't know if he'd come back but also promised Billy Dee Williams he'd get to fly the Falcon in his contract or something

chewie is on endor in rotj
the millennium falcon was originally lando's ship, so it's fine he gets to fly it for its final mission, originally it was supposed to be blown up, but that would be a downer for no reason

Lucas should have thrown Kasdan a bone and had Lando and his gang on the Millenium Falcon conduct a kamikaze mission to bring down the Death Star.

George BTFO everybody by refusing to kill Han. Years later Disney comes along, kills Han like 10 minutes into the first movie and everything completely falls apart afterwards.

Luckily George had already ruined everything by making the prequels so none of this matters anyway.

Kasdan's notion to have Luke killed was a truly horrible idea, but he's not wrong in principle

Kasdan does sound moronic here. Star Wars does have a lot of weird "will they won't they" type shit though, Han being frozen is definitely an example. It would have been really weird if they were just like "oh he died there lol", but bringing him back also took too much screentime and then he doesn't do anything the rest of the movie anyway.

    >you're a product of the 80s
how can you say this in 1980-1982 when ROTJ's story was being written?

harrison ford really wanted his character to be killed on endor though, and they weren't sure if lando should survive the death star explosion
I wonder what else was in the early drafts of ROTJ, we know that vader was supposed to take luke to proto-coruscant where the emperor lived, and there was supposed to be a lava lair

early scripts of ESB had a bunch of changes

episode iii was quite different at first too

Lucas was wrong. The popularity of Game of Thrones is proof that "killing your darlings" is kino writing of the highest order.

      >kino writing of the highest order.
      it's lazy
you can have characters die to raise stakes, but the stakes are already high enough in jedi
      things need to resolve

Faulkner meant kill them if they dont serve the story, he didn't mean kill them because its edgy.

Based. Frick all these homosexuals that like their grimdark endings just to make them "realistic" or some bullshit like that. Most people want stories with happy endings where the heroes triumph over evil and live to see their accomplishments. They want to forget about the depressing shit in their lives with a positive and optimistic ending.
I'm glad Lucas ignored both Kasdan and Ford and kept Han alive. Otherwise, I'm sure people would have hated RotJ for throwing away everything the first two movies did. That was the shitty sequels' mistake.
