It's the same reason why Top Gear works, it's just a vehicle for these three guys to argue with each other.

most of the guests barring a few obvious regulars like greg davies or mortimer are so fricking painfully unfunny it wouldnt have lasted a season without Mitchell and Mack

True, but I don't really think it relates to this specific show. I do agree that they're all a bunch of backstabbers though.

It’s more of its own special type of mental illness that seems to be explicitly caused by british television.

I always wonder how they get these anecdotes and how much time passes before they pick the guest and when they get some fitting stories.

I'd say they do, they always seem to be well-suited to the person, in the right kind of voice. Maybe they have writers for the unfunny plebs they sometimes get as guests but I'd say the comedian guests write their own stories

I assume they submit their own anecdotes then the writers come up with fake ones. They'd be able to make the lies personal because most of the guests are well known in the circuit

It forces the guest to have to concoct lies on the spot, which leads to more ridiculous and funny moments.

That's fair. They have to be vague about it either way to throw off the opponents so it works fine. Kevin Bridges' story was the funniest one I've listened to though.

They definitely don't come up with their own false stories. I remember once Lee got one that was logically impossible to be true and was so stupid he was visibly annoyed that he got such a shitty story from the writers
