Just watched it in non-imax. You're moronic if you pay extra to watch it in imax. This isn't an action flick, it's just a character courtroom drama. It's only in imax because it's nolan's preferred way of filming and viewing, but the actual content of the movie doesn't lend itself to imax. I would say imax is only worth watching if it provides a different experience from watching on a normal theater. Something like Avatar 2 is made to be watched in imax 3d and you would not get the same level of immersion on a normal screening. It's a hard sell to convince me that Oppenheimer is the same thing. (without the 3d of course).

Here in Canada you just have access to all showings when you pay for a single ticket. I mean technically you aren't allowed to, but since they only check at entrance you can pay once and stay there for the entire day. Is that not the case in the US?

        Anonymous

It used to be like that, you only showed your ticket at the entrance and then you could go from movie to movie.
They changed it years ago though, apparently to many urban youths were abusing it to hang around all day.
Now there is an armed security guard at the entrace for each movie checking your stub

          Anonymous

That sounds expensive as frick for the theater though. I guess that's mostly for popular movies right?

And damn now I wonder if that happened in Canada too. I know they used COVID as an excuse to do something like that for a short time but I wouldn't be surprised if they never went back to how it was before.

I still don't get it... Why become human? At the end all the Barbies fix everything and are kinda self aware and the Kens are not just "there" anymore. The mom even asked Mr. Mattel to make a ordinary Barbie which Margot Robbie could had been? So is there no more stereotypical Barbie? Did she not want to become Barbie anymore because she's too ordinary? After all the whole plot is kind of forced on her since the Mom was the one who made her self aware.

              Anonymous

I think the point was that there are no such thing as 'stereotypes' or 'ordinary' because everyone is special.
This comes from the extreme limits of individuality granted upon the West, which is very typical of the Hollywood elites to espouse.
As for why she became human, that's because humanity is what makes life worth living, you cannot know the highest triumphs without the lowest lows, In Barbieland, there were no stakes, in real life, death is the great equalizer.

                Anonymous

I guess I agree I must have zoned out. It was just weird because near the end the Mom and Ruth hammer into Margot Robbie that being ordinary is fine and enough and you don't have to be crazy incredible. But then she still wants to become human even though she could had just still been Barbie just without all the self pity and loathing... It just felt kinda out of nowhere for me idk why.

The movie is about accepting yourself for who you are, instead of defining yourself through the lenses of societal norms.
Earlier in the movie Ken(s) go through a similar arc, which culminates with them doing a musical number singing "I'm just Ken and that's enough", a moment when they stop defining themselves only through their relationship with Barbies.
And at the end, when Barbie decides to become a human, the movie does a fake out. You're made to think that she'll make a decision about her future career, or maybe decide on becoming a mother, but instead she just books an appointment to the gyno. Because she's just a woman and that's also enough.
Honestly the movie is pretty good and nuanced except for that one eye-roll inducing speech.

To be fair that was a bit earlier when he was still an butthole. It wasn't until Barbie and Ken talk it out that he realizes he isn't "just ken" anymore. His arc goes from bumbling idiot comic relief in love with Barbie to ruler of Barbieland and antagonist back to bumbling idiot comic relief in love with Barbie except now he isn't as pathetic.

The speech is inherently contradictory, or rather it points a constant contradiction. I think the ultimate point is that women are always asked to be something else, rather than just themselves.

Irrelevant shit for girls who like barbie. Women were a mistake.

Barbie gets depressed and has to go fix a family relationship. Ken feels slighted by Barbie for never acknowledging him and in the real world he gets respect and discovers patriarchy, so he brings it back to Barbieland.
Barbie then has a melty because she realised that she isn't special or good at anything since she's a stereotypical barbie. Then they have a feminist speech about women being oppressed and they can't just be enough. Ken has a very good musical number about the same thing.
It ends with Barbies taking back over Barbieland, letting Kens do more and acknowledge that they also need somewhere to be, but Barbie becomes human and Ken goes to discover himself

Except the "male part" of the story is just feminist messaging reframing itself to be less mask-off about its anti-maleness. It's not even on equal footing with any actual legal problems men face or anything. At the end of the day, it's still always muh patriarchy or muh capitalism at blame. How's that revolutionary in any way?

          >thematic rejection of Patriarchy
What? There is no serious criticism of Mattel's board of directors being staffed entirely by men, when Barbie makes her decision to become ordinary at the end they jump right at the chance to make money off of it and nobody ever proposes an alternative to that system. The way Barbieland works with the Kens getting more recognition but still playing second fiddle is exactly the same in reverse.

          Anonymous

The Barbies are Men and the Kens are Women. Also Barbie still chooses to live in the real world and with patriarchy at the end. Maybe if you could relate to people who don’t look like you, but you need “muh representation” to understand anything I guess. Can I ask you anon, how would you have felt yesterday if you had not eaten lunch or dinner?

Sorry, still not gonna watch it. Feminists are full of this condescending "I know it all" mentality about their gendered worldview and then try to reframe it as somehow a compassionate one and gaslight someone into thinking that the movement can "liberate" them, man or woman. I think of all the leftists school of thought, feminism is the absolute worst in terms of the level of dogma and regurgitation and absolute brain deadness required to worship this ideology.

My ass. What fantasy is there in this politicaly charged dreck? Who wants to be such a miserable b***hy person? Too many people are already that in real life. What an ugly thing to turn barbie into. They played up the fashion and toy accurate sets so fricking hard, so for a moment it seemed like it might just be about the fun of playing with barbies, but of course it would turn out like this. Barbie dolls don't have genitals. When she became a woman she got female genitals. It makes a decent last scene because it shows Barbie reaching full womanhood and is comedic, using dramatic irony by having a woman excited to go to gyno.

Her personal conflict in the movie was choosing between the static female-empowerment world and moving permanently to the real world with its rewards and challenges. Its not even that woke of an ending, motherhood is shown to be the big thing absent from barbieland. Becoming a real woman, vegana and all, was a good ending.

Also it's kind of weird that Skipper gets to be her own character but every other race ethnicity and wheelchair needs to be Barbie. But maybe I'm not far enough into the movie.

Girls can find emotional tampons online. Probably keep betas around irl for menial tasks like helping them move or picking her up from chad's place if she can't drive.

That's not a problem since it's made by and for women. Let's just accept this and move on. Hopefully there will be more trashy female movies in the future. I love the matriarchy.

Watched it with my wife last night here is the good and bad

    Good
    >Ryan Gosling knocked it out of the park as Ken and was entertaining the whole time
    >His character was based af
    >Margot did a fine job acting, and there were tons of shots of her ass in those pants
    >will Farrell was actually pretty funny too
    >it was designed well

    The bad
    >the fricking teenage goblina is absolutely insufferable and her dynamic with her mom is fricked up
    >seriously she never gets proven wrong, just learns to be less of a b***h
    >there were about 5-6 instances where you could tell the characters were mouthpieces for Greta
    >didn't have any nuance or subtlety discussing feminism
    >the Troon playing Dr Barbie is disgusting and WNBAW

Finally, I was confused about Allen's role. Is he supposed to be gay, or just a softboi? I get "he's Ken's buddy" but just what.

Agrees. The goblina was the worst part of the movie but I love that it made feminism look moronic.
Kens at their worst just wanted to be helpful and spend time with barbies, and even the 'epic' rant showed that women's biggest enemy are other women.
Babries can inspire women to be anything they want to be! Yet the moronic goblina wants an average barbie because filling barbies shoes is too much pressure.

Honestly I have a hard time believing men wouldn't be satisfied with just playing volleyball with their bros all day. The only way they wouldn't be is if seeds of doubt or shame were planted. And the thing is, men are more comfortable with casual sex more than women are. Women generally seek long term relationships.

Women have a very long history of shaming everyone in the world into catering to their whims so I believe it.

If you aren't allowed to challenge or criticize the message of a story, then there's nothing intellectual about it after all.

It's just the writer creating a safe space for themselves.
