I never had any issue with the costume design in Shamalyan’s movie. In fact, I thought his reimagining of Aang’s design translated really well to live action. It was literally everything else that was the problem. This looks like absolute shit and will be distracting as hell.

So how are they going to deal with Aang's actor aging?

Work like hell to get it done, or don't bring it up and have them age as they go. It's a "damned if they do, damned if they don't" moment like with the Stranger Things cast.

Which makes no sense. There's a reason the SWT was presented as not having any armor, metals, or big-ass bone walls

        Anonymous

You could charitably interpret bits of metal here, altho they aren't totally barbaric. He uses a metal boomerang as his signature weapon.

          Anonymous

          >barbaric
I'm not saying the SWT is barbaric.
They're a tribe that is actively being limited by the Fire Nation. They don't have warriors. They don't have benders. They don't have armories. They don't have ports. They don't have anything beyond ice walls.

Netflix designers clearly wanted to show off actual native designs, but they forgot the narrative point that the SWT is on the brink of nonexistence. These designs belong in the Korra era

            Anonymous

Honestly, the SWT makes no sense when you actually think about what's shown on screen. It cannot possibly be the couple dozen at best people we see on screen living in one incredibly small village. That's just nonsensical. Yet that appears to be the implication. Katara and Soka being the only two kids would be fricking dire. The SWT being oppressed and on the brink of collapse is a fine idea, but as usual artists have zero sense of what that actually means.

Shit like this is all over TLA too. Which isn't a big criticism, it's not that kind of show. But it does rub up against this odd disconnect several times in ways that complicate trying to think to hard about how the mundane part of this setting actually works.

              Anonymous

You're being autistic for no reason. The show never said or implied there was only 1 village in the South Pole. In fact, supplementary material confirmed that there were multiple small villages throughout the region that lived far apart from one another.

                >The show never said or implied there was only 1 village in the South Pole
                It kinda did.
I'm pretty sure Katara introduced her village by saying "here it is, the southern water tribe."
Which implied that was all it was.

Now, that didn't make a whole lot of sense, given the size of Hakota's army, but it was still kinda implied.
Not that I care that it was changed.

Not that I care that it was changed.

The specifics escape me, but I definitely recall some lines sounding odd if the implication wasn't supposed to be what we see is what there is. Same for the Air Nomads.

To be sure, it wasn't anything that couldn't have been easily written over, as it was in later material. But the point was being married to the original portrayal of Southern Water tribe feels silly, given what we're shown can't possibly be all there is. Things also look different in animation versus live action. This has always been a problem with adaptations like that, the need to try and keep the old designs while also avoiding making them look to bland now that it all has to be real material.

It's still gonna suck, I'm sure. But this particular point doesn't really seem worthy of shitting on it for.

Katara is really cute but I do wish they'd worn blue contacts or lightened her hair a bit.

Eye colors are almost always disregarded when making a live-action adaptation of something. Harry Potter dropped it, GoT dropped it, not surprising Avatar isn't keeping it. I know Witcher kept it, but sometimes it looks goofy enough to take you out of it.

It's supposed to be distracting and gross. Ozai made it as visible as possible to punish and humiliate him. It's meant to be an object of shame. That's the point.

          Anonymous

Yes dipshit but would it be too distracting and take away from general audiences finding Zuko cool? They probably focus tested a few scar designs and landed on that one. Half of you complain that it's too much like the show and the other half fixate on minor details that don't really detract from the overall theme.

Well it's much harder to make the burn with make-up, since you'd have to reapply it and remove it every time the actor enters and leaves a shoot.

These look brand new factory made and mass produced with modern equipment and tech, couldn't they have made them look more rustic and worn like real traditional clothes

Also maybe add some trinkets and details for believability, the reason the costumes look simple in the cartoon is because you have to draw that over and over again, not because it's peak design for every medium or something

To be fair, Aang himself mentally and physically aged (despite the short time frame) quite a bit over the course of the show. All of the cast did.

      Anonymous

They'll probably change the overall story to take place over several years instead of just 1, which would make sense since the group becoming masters of their elements in barely a year by the time Sozin's comet arrives was kind of silly.

      Anonymous

You know the story might actually be improved if they stretch it out over several years and let the actors age. Kataang at least would come off as less creepy if Aang has hit puberty by the time he starts banging Katara. We might even be allowed Tokka, god willing.

What flies in animation may look out of place in live action.

The color coating works great in the cartoon and comics, but the idea of people wearing a really bold color all around the body, just looks off.

What even is the appeal of live action remakes? All that money, time and effort to make something that looks worse, its not like those hacks at Netflix will make something better than the original story, why even bother?

      Anonymous

Because producers don't have faith in new IPs or in animation.

      Anonymous

Producers and executives honesty still don’t take animation seriously

      Anonymous

      Reasons:
      1. Renewing IPs to make it easier to keep the IP later on down the road.
      2. Adults still view cartoons as "for kids", so live-action remakes still have a chance of nostalgia-baiting the now-adult OG fans.
      3. Live action can be taken more seriously, if that's the direction they're going for.
      4. Animation studios in general aren't as common, good, or cheap as they used to be.
      5. Both animators and voice actors keep going on strike.
      6. Sometimes people are smart enough to realize that a new/aged voice coming out of the OG character's mouth sounds weird and sometimes creepy, and replacing the whole shebang with actual actors is less jarring. Best example: Iroh's hypothetical VA would get FRICKED by fans if he wasn't amazing.
      7. VFX/CGI production is big right now, way bigger than animation.

Me, I'm just glad it looks like it could be a straight adaptation so far and not some weird thing like PlotTwistMcGee did with that shit movie.

People see thing they know and they consume, simple as that. You oculd shape a turd into a pop culture reference and people would want to hold it.
Also people dont like cartoons and feel less embarassed about enjoying something thats more "realistic" in this way. Its moronic but thats how I have come to interpet it.

      >People like live action
No, people are obviously comparing the live action attempts. The race swaps during the first time was o fricking bad. People are but more hopeful now. We all know it's still gonna be shit

Looks better than Shyamaloo's garbage, but it's still so unnecessary. They'll have to work hard to prevent it from looking cheap and awkward.

I mean these are just stage photos and not actual screencaps from finalized episodes? Right?

Oh right all that’s missing is the dark filters to hide the bad cgi.

Only Aang looks like Shamalamadingdong's Aang. The rest look competent.

The rest look like they’re from the recap episode.
