So how does Cinemaphile feel about the mystic powers in TMNT? Does it have its place or does it stray too far from the martial arts and urban feel of the vision?

Who are the gays on the right?
I don't mind when other characters use magic shit or like the turtles have to steal some potion or amulet or some shit and via that they use magic for a few issues or an episode, but I don't think they should able to capital A be Able to use magic without someone else's (temporary) help or via straight up cheating
I don't care about magic powers but something about Donnie using a bladed weapon has always felt viscerally wrong to me.
Even new generation ninja turtles knew that a ninja who is only good at one weapon is a loser.
I heard the new one is Gonna have the Nightwatcher
>does it stray too far from the martial arts and urban feel of the vision?
Just a casual fan, but I agree.
Then again, the 03 show also had aliens, dinosaurs, time travel, a Lovecraftian entity, and a trampy time lord which are also as far removed from the "urban feel" as mystic powers (and I'm told at least half those things were in the original comics)
I have never watched a single TMNT but I do think magical weeb ninjas are the coolest thing and I'm confused why the west insists on making every ninja a regular guy in a black onesie that knows kungfu.
>and I'm confused why the west insists on making every ninja a regular guy in a black onesie that knows kungfu.
Because that was the image of the ninja back in the early 80s. At that time, the idea of "ninja" was just "stealthy kung fu sword guy" instead of the truer to history pragmatic thief in blue or the now more prominent Naruto gang sign flashing magic casters. The ninja back then are what is now called the Mall Ninja, after all the mall karate shops promising to teach kids ninjitsu and most of the time it's just reflavored and watered down shotokahn. They were everywhere back then. Movies, cartoons, the occasional video game. It was a popular and cool archetype that took the place of cowboys and indians and space men.
I guess that’s kinda true. 2003 TMNT had a fair share of anime references
>but I do think magical weeb ninjas are the coolest thing and I'm confused why the west insists on making every ninja a regular guy in a black onesie that knows kungfu.
Because Ninjas are skilled fighters in pajamas. Magic mystical bullshit are just fricking mages or wizards or shamans or whatever. Not ninjas. It's fine but that would be like saying people who dont case spells and just punch stuff are wizards. We have naming conventions for a reason.
You just have to avoid Naruto shit. Basilisk and Ninja Scrolls are a good example of how to write good superpower ninjutsu fight.
Mystic powers are fine as a self-contained gimmick that's there from the start, like how Rise handled it. Otherwise it's little more than a way to tell that the current series has long overstayed its welcome and needs rebooting.
>Otherwise it's little more than a way to tell that the current series has long overstayed its welcome and needs rebooting.
I disagree with this as a rule. But can't exactly counter it with anything other than Rise. 2003S5 was a mess but the spirit weapons weren't the problem: the attempt to triple the main cast and cut together a full series arc while missing 3 episodes because production was culled by management.
Well yeah, I never said it was the problem in itself. Just a symptom of bigger issues that the series usually can't return from.
Never saw the show on the right but man, I hate the look of it
Only if it's ninja magic and not 4 elements shit. Leave that to Avatar. Maybe have only one be good at it like Leo or Mike.
I mean ninja magic is anything someone telling a story about ninjas wants it to be though. From invisibility, teleportation, transformation, hypnotism to ... a bunch of D&D buff and evocation spells.
I’m just saying this doesn’t seem very stealthy
Agreed, mysticism can be Leo's gimmick. He is the most spiritual and always the first to learn ki and spirit world skill from Splinter or other. Make him look like shaman or monk and deal with supernatural things. As for Donnie, I think he is more like Artificers from Eberron.
Is Leo dead in this?
Or is Raph hallucinating?
TMNT IDW 20/20. Leo learned some sort of Spirit Walk ability that make him can fly and teleport. But for many years, studying the astral plane knowledge has made him a little crazy, so he stepped down as leader, and Mikey took over as leader.
Yeesh
I dipped on the 2017 series but I feel like Leo shouldn't be the leader and also the most powerful and also promoted to sensei in the middle of or start of the series. Unless it's part of a plot all the Turtles spit up and learn unique skills before they reconvene to teach one another.
Spiritualism and minor magical abilities being Leo's thing makes the most sense. He does the most meditating and astral projecting out of all the turtles. Donnie shouldn't be the one becoming a fricking wizard.
>human feet
Foot fetishist really can't hone it in for 5 second can they?

>IDW Publishing will shell-ebrate 40 years of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles in 2024. The publisher announced Monday (via The Hollywood Reporter) that it has renewed its licensing deal with Paramount for future TMNT comics, including the ongoing Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles by writer Sophie Campbell and artist Gavin Smith, and multiple titles to mark the brand's 40th anniversary this year. Paramount's Nickelodeon acquired the franchise rights from co-creators Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird's Mirage Studios and 4Kids Entertainment in 2009 to bring the IP — and heroes in a half-shell Leonardo, Raphael, Donatello, and Michelangelo — under the Nick banner.
>"We are delighted to continue our relationship with IDW Publishing for Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles comics and graphic novels," said Lourdes Arocho, SVP, licensing & publishing, consumer products, Paramount. "After 40 years, there are still so many more stories to be told, and we can't wait for everyone to see what's next."
How is IDW even still breathing at this point?
I mean, yeah, there’s Sonic, the Saturday Morning Show series and the Last Ronin sequel, but what else is keeping them from sinking? They lost Transformers and they lost Usagi
Why is this drawn in a "cheap Mexican cartoon porn" style?
Usually not executed very well that I've seen but as a concept I've never had an issue with it
cannot stand them, though the anime OVA is pretty funny and I can't hate it.
why do they have normal hands and feet
Shit fanart from furaffinity.
Splinter is an old ninja master and has used some stuff in v1, I'm almost sure he did a bit in '87 too, so it's okay for him.
The others should use more ninja tricks.
