ok esl
What pretentious butthole is watching this in a language other than English?
You can't even read subtitles burgerboy
The fricking fish sticks South Park episode
and also any joke that associates chickenpox with chickens and claustrophobia with santa claus
most languages also associate the pox with chicken, and santa claus is known internationally even if specific cultures have local holiday icons
santa claus has different names in other languages dumbass
read my post, moron. everyone knows the name "santa claus" even if there's a different name for him in the native language.
Not him, but no, not really.
Something closer to "Saint Nicholas", more or less, but not "Santa Claus".
i recognize murica is da greatest c**try in da world but I think you are overestimating how much you gringos influence foreign culture
when i was young i watched the chickenpox episode of dexter, and even tho i didn't get the name since i didn't know english, the correlation of "you get red spots because a chicken pecked you and gave you some kinda disease" was perfectly logical to me
Why dub South Park? Adults should know English.
Not everyone likes the disgusting sounding English language
Baguette hands made this post
Croissant is overrated btw
Nenn mich nochmal einen Froschfresser und sieh was passiert, Schwuchtel
Stop blasting ass into a microphone and letting speech to text transcribe it
roughly 1% of my country is fluent in english despite the fact that we are known for making everyone's lives online a living hell
I kinda doubt it's just 1%, what with parents putting kids in english schools in the 90s, videogames, RPGs, music...

to be fair isn't the whole gag of that episode being that the "fish sticks" joke is dogshit, and yet two 10 year olds came up with it and everyone thinks it's hilarious
you could absolutely translate it literally or semi literally and have it work
This is far from the only cartoon with puns and play on words. How do those things get localized in other languages?
something I had in my mind for a long time is how common universal translators are in sci-fi scenarios and what the frick happens when someone says a pun that only makes sense in the original language, do they just show an holographic TL note explaining it?
In the best case, it'd use your culture's nearest equivalent. In the worst case, it'd be sus
Asterix's italian localization is godlike, some jokes are even better than in the original (Obelix saying SPQR)
>Obelix saying SPQR
oh shit, i never noticed that. that's smooth
I watched all Star Wars animation in Japanese and when I've seen clips of scenes in English there are often things that the dub just ignores. For example Ahsoka's nickname 'Snips' is completely absent in the dub, I still have no idea what it means or whether it was ever explained in the English version
depends on the translator. Sometimes they directly translate them and sometimes they change the pun. Sometimes a translation even remebers that a two characters have the same voice actor and you gems like that
well yes but Toro E

The latin american dub of FOP is absolutely fricking terrible and disgusting.
People know the books overseas anon.
No
do you think a non english speaker will understand why Moby Dick turning into a duck is funny?
OP meant that episode was full of untranslatable puns
Jason and the Argonauts isn’t even a book. That always ticked me off even when I was a kid. The Argonauts story is taken mainly from Argonautica and also Euripides’ play Medea. There is no book called “Jason and the Argonauts.”
bet you feel silly now
every greek poem gets turned into a play who's script is placed into a textbook for your middle school teacher to force you to read
>People know the books overseas anon.
HAHAHA we don't.
No offence but no-one's read their own country's books, let alone third rate American ones.
>third rate
Mark Twain is not third-rate you thirdie, he's unironically one of the best writers in world literature of the past 500 years.
Family Guy
Shame Tom didn't have more screentime in the following seasons He had potencial as an antagonist
Butch can't even remember Chester, AJ and Tootie exist
yet dark laser kept coming back
good
Have other countries even attempted to translate Dr. Seuss books?
no idea but I remember watching the Grinch cartoon dubbed
I remember watching The Wubbulous World of Dr. Seuss in Spanish.
Why is every Fairly Oddparents thread made by a spic?
They used to air that show 24/7 on Jetix LA
Cinemaphile has an insanely high proportion of LatAm posters
I watched the Spanish dub and still got the Uranus joke since in Spanish Uranus is called URANO and anus is ANO
People of other countries would not even know who Tom Sawyer is
how are you even supposed to translate the three mouse queers without losing the punchline
Dunno, but I never understood why they couldn't say the full word
Same for this
does Craig McCracken actually expected the kids watching it to get any of the refs?
You're saying kids don't know about The Beatles?
of course they know, but I don't think they are aware of the minimum details of the band's history to get the references in that episode
You only really need to know one or two references to get it
That episode does feel like the animators just having a laugh among themselves. I don't even like Beatles but got a lot of chuckles out of it, doubt I would as a kid though.
Ah gee whiz, I sure hope my American cartoon isn't aimed at Americans.
What do they expect animators to do? Do different mouth animations for every single dub out there?
They want them to do the anime thing where the mouths open and close without shaping a word.
>all those jokes about a bat using a bat or something like that
It was an "Aha moment" when I remembered those years later, when I had some some knowledge of English.
This one is a bad example because the joke still works without the pun, but whatever.
Curse you english puns!
I see Cinemaphile is already running out of stuff to discuss about. Would it be different if the banned show was allowed here again?
That board stopped discussing the show a long time ago so not really.
puns are also the reason why there are only 2 comedy anime that are watchable for those that aren't fluent in japanese(Cromartie Highschool and Danshi Koukosei no Nichijou)
Is Japanese humor really that centered around puns? Do they not have other popular forms of comedy?
they also do lots of slapstick but I often find those too corny to be funny
is either that or sexual innuendos
There's like four different Japanese jokes
>Puns
>Something absurd happens and a character says it's absurd
>A character is stupid and another character calls them stupid
>Dude sex lmao
and the sex jokes usually fall in two categories:
>virgin incel gets blueballed
>nymphomaniac chick is thirsty for the MC but he either has a panic attack at the sight of boobies or is too dense to see the signs
>(Cromartie Highschool and Danshi Koukosei no Nichijou)
Immaculate taste, lad. Keep fighting the good fight.
IMO Konosuba and Mob Psycho (though not strictly comedy) were pretty funny at times. Both had good use of comedic timing which is kinda absent from the standard nip stuff
>Cromartie
>Konosuba
>Nichijou
I'd add Shinobuden to the list, but I remember one of my favorite stupid jokes is a single wordplay.
Not Nichijou. Danshi Koukosei no Nichijou.
Oh, I'm probably thinking of the wrong one, then. I liked the humor (at least with the main characters) in Nichijou.
