The cartoon was #1 for months on Netflix when they released it. There's clearly an audience for ATLA, the only way to milk it any more is a Live Action version.

        Anonymous

I've been saying this since it was announced. There's no point in trying to adapt this and try to follow the exact same story beats as book 1. Best they can hope for is making it a 1:1 live action version of the cartoon and making the effects good enough to look cool. But ad we've already seen and read in announcements that they are making changes to characters personalities, and the bending/special effects we have seen just look awful. Adapting cartoons, anime, and even comic book storylines to a certain extent(see Civil War, or No way Home trying to adapt sinister 6) will always leave fans of the original source material disappointed.

Just take the Avatar name and slap it onto a live action series with a new Avatar, or if they are unoriginal, do it on a previous Avatar like Kyoshi or Roku. The og series gave just enough info on those two where Netflix has a solid premise for a show and can fill in the blanks with all kinds of Woke shit and diversity without passing off as many people.

I genuinely do not know. While the concept works better in cartoon form, it still looked moronic as frick and made no sense. I stand to reason that the only people who liked the cartoon were people who grew up with it and find it impossible to critique due to their emotional attachment. I can vaguely empathize, but at some point you gotta get past it. I grew up watching all nine seasons of DBZ on the orange bricks with the Bruce Faulconer scores, on repeat. Day after day, week after week, month after month.
I'm old enough to admit the fight choreography is bullshit and the heroes only ever win via the villains acting moronic. And let me tell you that shit traslates even worse to live action. The ANIMATION is half the appeal, whether you realize it or not at the time. Moreso than the actual designs of the world and its characters. Spirited Away? Some of the most memorable design work in animated history, DOESN'T MEAN I WANT TO SEE SOME REAL LIFE homie WITH A BLACK BLANKET DRAPED OVER HIS HEAD SHUFFLING AROUND MOANING AT PEOPLE AND THEN A GIANT CGI MOUTH EATING THEM

It's the other way around, DBZ villains only win because the heroes themselves are morons. In basically every arc after Z had they just utilized the tools at hand better and didn't go "muh fight autism" the whole thing would be over when they first summoned the dragon and asked it to destroy Vegeta and Nappa's pods.

How did i not hear about this? I just found their open letter to fans
An open letter to Avatar: The Last Airbender fans:

        >Many of you have been asking me for updates about the Avatar live-action Netflix series. I can finally tell you that I am no longer involved with the project. In June of this year, after two years of development work, Bryan Konietzko and I made the difficult decision to leave the production.

        >When Bryan and I signed on to the project in 2018, we were hired as executive producers and showrunners. In a joint announcement for the series, Netflix said that it was committed to honoring our vision for this retelling and to supporting us on creating the series. And we expressed how excited we were for the opportunity to be at the helm. Unfortunately, things did not go as we had hoped.

        >Look, things happen. Productions are challenging. Unforeseen events arise. Plans have to change. And when those things have happened at other points during my career, I try to be like an Air Nomad and adapt. I do my best to go with the flow, no matter what obstacle is put in my way. But even an Air Nomad knows when it’s time to cut their losses and move on.

        >I started to reevaluate what is truly important in my life and what I wanted to do with what’s left of it. I took some advice from Uncle Iroh. I looked inward and started asking myself the big question: “Who are you and what do you want?”

          Anonymous

          >I also sought wisdom from Stoic philosophers who were big on differentiating between what is within our control and what isn’t. I realized I couldn’t control the creative direction of the series, but I could control how I responded. So, I chose to leave the project. It was the hardest professional decision I've ever had to make, and certainly not one that I took lightly, but it was necessary for my happiness and creative integrity.

          >And who knows? Netflix’s live-action adaptation of Avatar has the potential to be good. It might turn out to be a show many of you end up enjoying. But what I can be certain about is that whatever version ends up on-screen, it will not be what Bryan and I had envisioned or intended to make.

          >I also want to be clear that this doesn't mean the end of my involvement in the Avatar universe. These stories and characters are important to me and the renewed interest and excitement in Avatar and Korra has been inspiring to see.

          >Writing this letter has left me with a very heavy heart. I know many of you will be disappointed and frustrated by this news. I get it. I share your disappointment and frustration. I also recognize this creative setback is small compared to the problems we’re all facing as a society right now.

          >Thankfully, Iroh offered some wisdom for that, too: “Sometimes life is like this dark tunnel. You can’t always see the light at the end of the tunnel, but if you just keep moving you will come to a better place.”

          >May we all keep moving and come to a better place.

          >Thanks for reading and for your continued enthusiasm for the Avatar universe.

          >With gratitude,

          >Michael Dante DiMartino

Let's be honest, a live action version of Avatar will never work because real life is too limited unlike animation, and I'm not a fan of remaking the show episode by episode as if we can't just watch the original instead.
This is also why I can't understand all the praise the LA One Piece got, it's lame too.

Zuko (from the cartoon) looks Chinese not like a Jomon though, you can't deny this. Admiral Zhao in the cartoon is just white dude with mutton chops despite being from "Japan". Katara is a blue-eyed Italian with huge non-asian eyes even though this is supposed to be an Inuit. person. I don't think I have seen a single Inuit with blue eyes. Some of the darkest characters in the series are based off Louisiana hillbillies. It isn't supposed to make sense

Avatar is a fictional world and most of the characters are just based off varieties of white people and people need to stop coping about it with muh historical inaccuracies. Avatar is not our world

Also applies to Japanese animation; they are fictionalized designs based on more idealized traits. The majority of IRL Asians look ugly as sin with undesirable features. White people are simply more objectively comfortable to look at is all.

Money laundering. It's just money laundering, it has nothing to do with pajeets or minorities, they just steal the budget then force everyone to act on moronic deadlines. Not to mention retooling the entire script or story because some moronic executive has something to say halfway through filming so even more of the already stolen budget is eaten. Hollywood has become a competition of how much budget you can steal and get away with making a profit.

ATLA was never good. It was always the poor man's Naruto. Learn to reject American goyslop and embrace Japanese art.

After Korra and the comics I was forced into having this opinion. While it's not the poor man's Naruto because Naruto is the exact same shit right now, it is incredibly flawed as a series, and if you genuinely started watching it as an adult and enjoyed it as immensely as a child would there's something wrong with your taste.

Boruto is the Korra of Naruto. They only ruined whatever good was left in the show.

I completely agree. The parallels are there too with Avatars last minute moralgayging about murder mirroring the whole Madara twist in putting a sour note to the otherwise fine direction of the ending, and the shipping autism.

This is what a movie without good creative direction looks like. It looks like shit. They didn't have enough budget to make good enough CGI so instead of finding a creative way to stylize the movie around the limitations they just bruteforced it while trying to mimic hollywood capeshit as much as possiburu. Also why this homosexual is white?

The last Airbender is a moronic thing to adapt anyway, just don't do it, why is this ONE cartoon getting adaptations? Why did Shyamalan pick that? Why is Netflix doing this now?
