Pretty hype for this, it's one of the few shows I could bond with my father over. He sounded pretty happy being told it's coming this week.

Lucky you. I'd need subtitles to watch it with my dad, and I'm almost certain it wasn't translated into my language.

Btw they won't release the whole season at once. It's 3 episodes first and one episode weekly after that.

Not sure how to feel about that. I was planning to binge watch the whole thing. I just hope Amazon handles the show better. Season 1 was a shitshow because of AMC releasing episodes out of order

As far as we know, Amazon only got the rights for AU and NZ

I hope they boot up a backup of her, even with her 2ish years of memories as a UI lost she could still live again. At this point if we're considering a UI to 'be' that person, than any instance of that code you run is too. Logistics has a copy of David still I think.

          Anonymous

yes they probably have the original copies of everyone, but the "self" does include your memories, because they are part of you
a reboot of Lori wouldn't be the same person as the one we met during S1

            Anonymous

She'd be the person she was when she was first uploaded, she's 'the same' minus the couple years of time she spent as a UI getting used to it.
If you lost two years of your memory, would you still be "you"?

I think the whole point of Pantheon is to make the viewers consider this question
I think of "me" as the present person I am for example, so the past "me" and the future "me" are not the same person as me right now if that makes sense

Why isn't Caspian included on the cover with Maddie? Maddie is the bookend who starts and ends the series, but everything else that happens in both seasons essentially revolves around Caspian. He is just as important to the story as her, if not more so. Guy deserves his spot on the cover.

        Anonymous

Caspian wasn't a character in the original stories so that's probably why

          Anonymous

That doesn't make sense. Normies have never read the short stories and I doubt there are any purists out there in any meaningful numbers that would complain about his inclusion.

            Anonymous

Yes, but they also used that pic to replace the cover for Ken Liu's short stories collection may be confused on who the boy would be (though this is just pure speculation on my part)

Who did the original stories focus on if not Caspian? He's integral to the animated series so I am curious as to how drastically it differs from the originals.

Maddie... it was all Maddie, and Holstrom's counterpart was only present in the last act

              Anonymous

Was Maddie a super genius like Caspian in the original, or was she just above average like in the animated series?
Did anything make her important to the story aside from her relationship to her father which I assume was still present in the original?
Was GodMaddie a thing in the original as well?

                Anonymous

She's above average, though some programmers find her programming skills to be rather unrealistic. (i don't have a STEM background, just something I read from one of the reviews)

And no, God Maddie isn't a thing in the stories. The last act was 'Holstrom' and Maddie having a debate on whether virtual reality is superior or not, and the ending was inconclusive. That's what I like about Ken Liu's works: showing both sides of the issue, and you make your own conclusions

To be fair I don't know if I can finish watching Pantheon because of reasons I won't disclose, but with my biases aside, I'm more into the original stories, since they're more contemplative in nature. Pantheon is good for those who want more plot and action, with more explicit political events

Honestly disliked how full throated they want people to accept UI in the show. No one really even focuses on the fact that it’s suicide and that it’s a copy of you not actually you.

                Anonymous

This. One of my favorite parts of season 1 is the moral dilemma of being human vs being a UI, especially with the flaw. In the last 2 eps they make it clear it's infinitely better to be a UI in basically every way

                Anonymous

Helen uploading seemed so out of character considering she clearly still thought UI David wasn’t truly the same as normie David. If this got a season 3 it probably could have focused as Maddie and David Jrs relationship about him effectively wanting to kill himself.

Big step up compared to the first season. Animation quality is a lot better, the whole show just looks better in general. Idk if they got more budget or something but it's a noticeable difference.

I'm only on Episode 3 but the writing improved too. Certain characters get more screentime, and the story flows better. There's also a certain thing that will make some anons very happy in here

Finally finished it. Got VPN to work thanks to this kind anon
It was great and went to very shocking places. It's unlike any other series I have ever seen. Some people may dislike how absurd it gets by the end, but its so different and unique in this day and age that I will take it. I only have 3 problems
      >an easy solution to the main conflict doesn't happen just because a character acted rude for one moment
      >there are clear villains in this story that needed to die, compared to the previous season where it was more nuanced
      >the final 2 minutes are a let down compared to the rest of the finale
For the last one I think I'm fine ignoring the last 2 minutes and pretend the show ended before that. It's a really stupid decision that the writers thought made it "smart" but it just needlessly complicates things. Everything else about the ending was great though.
People seriously are not prepared to see the lengths this show goes on. Jolly good show.

So you wanted Maddie to accept SafeSurf's invitation and join it/them and potentially other enlightened alien species at the galactic core? The show says some other Maddie can do that so it's your choice as well. In another time it might have made for a neat dvd extra.

          Anonymous

It just seemed pointless to me that they go back to the beginning. They could have just gone back to the world they left with their families and be fine there. I guess they wanted to be poetic or some shit, but it was so unnecessary. Especially when everything else about the finale was about these cosmic beings doing so much just to be kind to one another. That said, they also made it clear there’s more than one version of these events going on, and “the next Maddie” will do something different. So I can pretend Caspian and Maddie just look at the final scene, call themselves stupid and go back to their families

            Anonymous

It's not what really happened. The story is just running on a loop inside the simulation SafeSurf is running 43 million years in the future to honor its creators.

It is definitely going to hurt discussion not being able to smaller talks over the course of a month, but honestly with how bad season 1 was fricked and the prospect of no season 2 for over year, imo it's better to just put it all out and let fans do their own thing.

To summarize it quickly, it's about scanning people's brainwaves into AI programs and the morality that stems from it. It follows three groups
      >Maddie and her mom Ellen get contacted by an anonymous person who strangely has the same speech/text patterns as their late father/husband.
      >Caspian is a young genius who shortly finds out his entire life is a fabrication and sets off to find out why
      >Chanda is an Indian tech engineer who is working on the latest AI technology. His bosses are scumbags and use him as an experiment so he becomes one of the AI programs. He gets pissed.

It's a good show. Doesn't really do anything "original", but does a lot of things well.

Yeah, it feels that way, honestly, I'm pleasantly surprised how they did it though, despite some gripes about how certain arcs were ended. Things could have been a lot worse.

Laurie is just gone when she was such a highlight from the first season, and I don't feel Chanda's turnaround made much sense without more development.

Just finished episode 3. What the FRICK is wrong with Joey and her family
    >Hey I can't just give you godlike power because I don't trust you and it'd be irresponsible
    >Oh so you're the REAL murderer, and my husband is completely justified in killing two teenagers while my children are in the house, that's not murder because you won't make me a god
    >I said I was completely fine with dying when I underwent this process btw
Fricking psychopathic behaviour from the lot of them. I don't blame Caspian/Maddie at all for folding after being held at gunpoint, but Joey did not deserve the cure at all. I hope she dies to the virus.

        >the impression that anyone else wanted teenage murder
Her sister didn't, but Joey herself seemed completely ambivalent to the fact these two children were being threatened into giving her the cure. She had the nerve to call Caspian a murderer for not immediately curing her but immediately hugged her husband who was moments earlier prepared to blow out the brains of two kids in earshot of her own kids.

They purposefully make the uploading thing vague in the show so people like you will think that. I don't believe anyone would actually upload in our current world unless it was somehow proven you weren't just going to die and leave a copy.

Yeah, I have no fricking clue what I've just watched. The ending was like Evangelion-levels of "What the actual frick just happened?". Why build the space link on the nazca lines?
Like lets disregard the absolute moronation actually writing
    >No one knew or thought about the nazca lines while proposing the location
    >the idea that only a tiny group of natives said it would be bad to destroy the nazca lines after it started
    >when they are up there with the pyramids and great wall with monuments to human engineering
    >And it was an international incident not 5 years ago when some idiots drove a car over a couple lines
Why build it on land that could be disputed at all?
It's in south peru so it doesn't need to be anywhere near the equator. And they say cooling for these facilities is a premium.
Why not just build it in the middle of the ocean, or at least the middle of relatively shallow seas?

      As a peruvian I don't really give a damn

I really enjoyed the action scenes in the show even though it's far from the focus. I really hope this crew goes onto make some action focused media so we can get more of it, they did incredibly exciting fight scenes way better than shows where fight scenes with special powers are the actual draw

Yeah the best thing that can come out of this is that these people get more jobs. Now their whole work is out for the world to see

I took it that there was some implicit gobbledyasiatic where placing the space elevator in those two locations would be the optimal placement for them. I wouldn't be surprised if the human council did it intentionally to stonewall the UIs
      >UIs don't give a damn about ancient human history so they have no problem asking the human council for that location because it's optimal
      >Human Council agrees knowing full well people will get pissed down the line, giving them an excuse to block the whole thing
      Also
      >>And they say cooling for these facilities is a premium.
The link itself isn't what needs the cooling. They state in the show that the cooling for the storage itself is a non-issue, dealt with by the fact the storage is in space. The fact they don't need to supply cooling is part of why the ring was an objectively good idea from the UI standpoint; it was objectively more space and resource efficient

Humanity goes extinct through consensual suicide. Their digital copies (who think they are the originals) go on to become super advanced and build a giant computer network in space to run simulations. The simulations are close enough to real so they consider them reality. The virus they launched into space comes back and is hyper advanced from meeting aliens and invites the digital humans to the outside-of-reality-hyper-advanced-club. They go back into the simulation so they can frick for eternity. The end.

It makes sense that they ignored the suicide issue considering the first ui's would have immediately solved that issue but then created the issue of having two versions of an individual. Two versions of yourself living simultaneously seems like an interesting story concept

It is, at a surface level, just Serial Experiments Lain. The difference being that Lain has more going thematically with its philosophy and more going with its world building as well. Lain isn't really all about computers and simulations even on a narrative level unless you're a spastic who can't into media literacy.
But yeah, this series ripped it off - hard. Not just the ending. The ending merely cements it as a Lain remake in my head.
It's the embodiment of this meme

with SEL arcing "reality is unquantifiable and based purely on perception and experience" and Pantheon staring straight at it with "if you make people into computer programs they become God and can simulate reality with complete control"

        >Lain isn't really all about computers and simulations even on a narrative level
So then how did it rip off of it...? Lain doesn't have AI in it at all and the ending is needlessly complicated. If Pantheon was a Lain ripoff it'd be way more pretentious, and it's not even pretentious like at all.

Final 2 episodes are nuts, really liked some aspects but also still kind of unsure on how a few things were done.

Overall: pretty cool show that has a lot of interesting concepts and delivers on them ~~*most*~~ of time. Am glad I gave it a watch. There's something about it that hinders it from being truly great to me, I'm not sure what that is, maybe it's just that the characters are a biiit wooden and don't grab me as much as they could? At least the Brit woman's story had something to it. It continued what Lori and David had started, exploring non-human existence. The fact that literally EVERYONE including holstrum just existed as avatars who anime fought was incredibly shit. The best parts of S1 were UIs starting to decouple from their extant humanity and to interface with technology and their own self-understanding more abstractly. I could frick with it being "only high IQ people can/would do this and everyone else wanted to live in META(tm)" but in the end The Cloud and UIs were just VR avatars that had control over the flow of time with some learning to instance themselves (while still being constrained to human fetters and conceptions).
Also instancing. Why the frick didn't more people instance themselves. There was 0 fricking reason to fix Caspain. They had a raw upload right there. Just instance him and memory sync with Peace in the Middle East and Mist to fill in the blanks. Frankly instancing and memory syncs solves the integrity problem WITHOUT needing to solve Integrity.

It's genuinely tragic. I was celebrating 2 first week one the following but here we are. I had to binge it so I wouldn't miss out on discussions.

they were inside a box inside another box

Yes and no. The presence of an Omegon means two things. One there's an effective lid (or potentially lids) to the box. We can say the simulation stops here and goes no further but also that all immediate realities are valid. Maddie speculating that she's a box in a box is sensible but recursive and false after x amount of boxes are opened. There are infinite boxes down but not up. There's no need for the Anti-virus to contact a Maddie that is more than a layer of simulation below them. Though she is correct there is an infinite set of Maddie boxes that the Antivirus have observed.
That said, we also know, because Caspian told her, and because Caspian is the root of the Omegon, that her original root reality is at least one of a potential set of Omega Points (lids).

Did Maddie and Caspian went back to relive everything the exact same way? Or they gonna make different choices this time around?

Invariably there would be different choices. They didn't even go back to the 'correct' world - which wasn't even correct because it required her to doctor it in order for it to be reproduced. They were just nostalgic and had been existentially btfo'd. Maddie effectively committed immortality sudoku because she realized she wasn't the level 0 reality.

She did it because that's all she needed.

I will follow this up with a premptive counterpoint.
The only thing that suggests this is a full recursion is that GodMaddie's reality is, as far as we saw, the exact reality she later produces. Which would suggest that GodMaddie is the product of another GodMaddie. The only way THIS could be real is if her simulations were so accurate that she could effectively capture the evolution of Anti-virus to Omegon and recreate their interactions with her recursively as well. This doesn't seem likely given she was rattled upon meeting them - implying, reasonably, that she was running localised simulations rather than truly universal ones from prime cause to final end.
Still, supposing she WAS running them that way and just being too autistic to check what happens after the single crisis point that defined her life (moronic for a nigh on eternal being, sorry) then there would be a root Maddie who was driven to become GodMaddie without her or her father's influence, who then failed to make a proper sim, produced the 'good enough sim' which created recurisve good enough sims ad infinitum.
This is based on the ROOT Maddie already being a level 1 sim in the Antivirus Omegon's full universe sim and therefore capable of infinite computation and infinite storage allowing for infinite recursion.

She made the choice for the latter because she deemed it preferable. Because her question was answered. The scene of her touching the meteor is not just about accepting that mistakes are always going to happen and that you can't do anything to prevent them, but that ultimately mistakes are a good thing. It's what makes you human. Preventing them is foolish, not because it's impossible, but because being all powerful and all knowing just isn't something you want. It's the end of existence.

Keep in mind, also, that this is almost certainly not a looping story. She had to make billions of simulations and alter tiny aspects of them for 100k years to get to the exact reality she was from. That's the only one where she will go through all of these events. She decided to live her life, not knowing what would happen, knowing that it would be hard. She chose to go back to all that pain and eventually die, either as a human or much later as a ui, because she realized that that is what makes life worth living.
Whether you think that's because of her limitations as a human or whatever, it's not because she was seeking an out.

    Okay that was pretty cool.

  110. 7 months ago
    Anonymous

So I've combed it one last time and the finale is kind of contrived. For starters lets just short hand the majority of events in the series to the label “Primeline”. With this in mind here are some facts.
    1. GodMaddie witnessed Caspian's revelation which we later understand to be from the Antivirus.
    2. GodMaddie espouses that she can only generate a limited number of simulations with her Dysonsphere due to resource limitations
    3. Godmaddie's “Near-original timeline” (NoT) is a product of direct intervention from herself and an instance of her David
    4. Caspian interacted with a higher order David Kim (HODavid) in the primeline
    5. Antivirus have created an Alephpoint , if not an Omegapoint “From our event all other events can be observed”

The first major issue is whether the epilogue featuring GodMaddie takes place in the Primeline.
If yes then her reality is a nested simulation because HODavid 'nudged' Caspian back onto the proper path. This cannot be true because GodMaddie confirms she has hard limitations on processing power and simulating even a single instance of her simulating every other instance up until the point of finding the NoT is physically impossible.
Therefore we have to accept that the Primeline takes place entirely in her simulations up until the point we start the epilogue. We have never seen GodMaddie's original timeline and we can only confirm Caspian's revelation by virtue of GodMaddie confirming they're exactly alike at the end of the epilogue.

Yes, the show doesn't actually show the original timeline. I think that has to be the case.
      There's three iterations.
The show takes place in the second iteration, aided by the first iteration's Maddie, then the show ends in a third iteration.

        Anonymous

Break down your take on the iterations. Mine in more detail is here:

The second major issue is the Antivirus. Is it possible for Maddie to simulate the conditions to have Caspian speak his revelation? Plainly, no. Given that the means used to have him deliver it were based on super advanced tech far into the future it's feasible that she could enter into something of a simulated daisy chain if she were simulating from her own Omega Point but she has a Dysonsphere to work with.

That means that the ONLY explanation for the ending is:
        Root
        >caspian created the Antivirus Omegon by unknown means
        Level 1 OR Root
        >the Antivirus simulates the conditions for GodMaddie to exist in order to observe her actions OR through the complete observation of reality have created her timeline and can interact with it
        Nested Simulation / Primeline
        >Godmaddie's worlds all execute simultaneously until she gets something that 'should' be close enough to observe Caspian's initial behaviour - except it would be impossible for him to exhibit this behaviour within the bounds of her simulations - and having watched GodMaddie either via simulation or acausal observation, throw her a bone and alter the sim so that Caspian says it again in order to initiate contact in accordance with the original rev

        >Caspain's revelation is entirely arbitrary or otherwise simply exists to push Maddie into the schizo spiral that creates GodMaddie
That's kind irritating. What we can say with near absolute certainty that no “Maddie watching right now” exists and it makes no sense that the characters would suggest otherwise. It was simply there as a cheap line I Fricking Love Science style.

This is true, though I think it can be handwaved away by safesurf just altering Maddie's simulation. Perhaps in order to stop her from her fruitless searching, as a thank you for helping to create them?

What are 'these simulations'. For starters there's no proof the GodMaddie line is a simulation rather than something more advanced. Beyond that, there's nothing to indicate they're running multiple instances. They seemed specifically interested in one Maddie and not particularly interested in achieving a specific outcome insofar as they were just wanting to see what she would do in general - in direct contrast to Maddie and the NoT. Finally, given their interest and invitation Maddie has no control over the sim - I mean technically you could argue the Antivirus is making a council of Maddies subsequently instead of just harvesting them simultaneously from interesting sims all at once but that's contrived as frick and even then any Maddie watching GodMaddie's recruitment would have already made that decision.

Does safesurf need to be creating a simulation? Is that a confirmed fact?
What if at first there were no simulations, events of the show happened (sans interference), Kaspian isn't prophesizing anything, he's just being corrupted by safesurf and says random nonsense as his mind begins to break down, Maddie looks for a meaning behind it, creating the show's reality, with interference, safesurf knows about it and in order to give her a way out of her obsessive search for the answer that just isn't there makes her believe in the whole 100k years thing, gives her an answer that would satisfy her, then she and Sim-Kaspian enter another simulation, the end.

That was SafeSurf's original mission. When Pope put it into the cloud it started killing humans to "save" UIs purely on the basis that it wanted to survive, and had decided to do so by appeasing the UIs. Caspian convinces it to find its own, newer purpose. At the end they literally did just want to say thank you.

        >Does safesurf need to be creating a simulation? Is that a confirmed fact?
        Not at all.
        1. They refer to locations when discussing invitations and societies, not levels in simulations, nor do they pull her into a different space or order when talking with her.
        2. They say they can observe all events and could very possibly have made Caspian speak the revelation acasually

It seems far, less sensible for it all to be a ruse given Caspian said it was them before they admitted to it being them. Again you could argue they were fricking with her sims, in fact you MUST argue that given he said it, but I don't personally find it compelling.

Safesurf's mission until the end was to protect humans, Maddie is the last human. It would stand to reason Safesurf would try to help her out just to help her out.

Safesurf respects digital life equivalently to organic. All Maddie's sims are as legitimate as GodMaddie herself in terms of human life. They thanked Caspian who is a sim.

I'm not differentiating between godmaddie or her sims, I'm not saying that they saved her from digital life or whatever, but they might have saved her from pointlessly chasing the white rabbit. Who knows what their motivations are. Does your theory give Safesurf any believable motivations?

            >Does your theory give Safesurf any believable motivations?
They explained part of their motivations pretty clearly, they feel indebted to Caspian and they see potential in Maddie as a fellow advanced life form. They did invite her to bail on her autism sims and come hang out in galactic centre after all (note they live at the galactic edge themselves).
If by motivation you mean for Caspian's revelation? Frick knows. It and the "Maddie watching this" just feel like shit writing trying to punch up the script for people who would start checking out the moment we flashed forward.

I suppose your position on GodMaddie being in a simulation has to come down to the means by which Caspian gave his final words. If you think Antivirus could not, by any other method, have transmitted the knowledge to him then it must be a sim. If you believe it could have been then it is most likely reality.
If you want to reach then you can say it wasn't Antivirus at all and Caspian's testimony post simulation is the Antivirus uncharacteristically altering Caspian's perception of what occurred despite them treating him with reverence literal moments later.
Everything else is irrelevant. The revelation is so fricking pivotal you can reduce any position to this.

        >this doesn't require medelling
I mean, it does. He repeated the lines in the sim. Maddie could not have simulated those conditions herself meaning no matter what position you take they were messing with her sims to some extent and more specifically Caspian. Which is really dumb given their attitude towards him later.
There's no other way to explain Primeline Caspian saying the line -or if there is I can't think of it.

The explanation for that is that she made a huge amount of simulations and created the perfect copy of the reality she was from. Safesurf at that point wasn't yet a complex program. Why wouldn't her perfect simulation also replicate whatever Caspian and Safesurf saw when they melded?

            >and created the perfect copy of the reality she was from
            a) that's factually wrong. HODavid proves that
            b) that's not how simulations work, if it were she would not have needed trial and error. There was no basis from which she could simulate Antivirus' future actions, unless you think the Antivirus became the Kwisatz Haderach then and there and were literally predicting the future - which she still couldn't simulate without understanding

Yes, I don't buy into the Safesurf simulation theory. I don't think they went back (or into a simulation) to tell Caspian this pointless prophecy.
I just can't see rhyme or reason for Safesurf doing that.

Did the Antivirus speak through Caspian
                Yes:
                a) it was a simulation and they just added whatever
                b) they're working backwards in time as omegapoint observers
                c) they instantly became capable of prime cause tier computation and near perfectly predicted the futre
                No:
                a) Caspian said it for other reasons, Antivirus took credit and then directly tampered with GodMaddie's simulations in order to make Caspian believe they were the cause and or have the event occur at all. Why would they frick with her sim? To fulfill her self-imposed prophesy? She wasn't concerned with NoT Caspian very much given they just mind wiped at the end anyway.

Just finished, thought the ending was gigakino, and on the off chance anyone from the production team is here I'd like to thank you because this is legitimately one of the best animated shows in years. Damn near the top for western animations at least. That done, here's my attempt at writing up an explanation for the ending:

    MASSIVE SPOILERS TO FOLLOW

Reality PRIME: The original. There are no "simulations" of this universe. The events of the show play out. Safesurf goes to space, becomes God, essentially. Caspian is dead as a doornail. Unknown end for humanity. Maddie does not become GodMaddie, because here Caspian does not give her the end date.

Reality SIMULATED - Safesurf simulation: Safesurf wants to thank its creator, Caspian. So they simulate reality. They nudge Maddie on the path to becoming GodMaddie.

(I suspect there is another layer between above and below, but I'm not 100% on that)

Reality SIMULATED - Subsimulation: THE EVENTS OF THE SHOW TAKE PLACE HERE. This includes Godmaddie simulating all the universes. The level of reality that we observe, essentially. One that is observed by Safesurf. There are some indications that this is a simulation by BiggerGodMmaddie, since she doesn't know how to reach the show's ending without inserting her dad to talk to Caspian, but that becomes a little confusing and isn't 100% clear.

Reality SIMULATED: The Show itself. Self-explanatory. This is the level being simulated below Godmaddie, observing everything and essentially acting as God. What she observes, in essence.

      Anonymous

That would give them ample motivation for starting the simulation.
I am fine with this theory, I probably prefer it over my own. This one amends it nicely.

      Anonymous

      > There are some indications that this is a simulation by BiggerGodMaddie
I think 'the maddie that's watching us now' is really just the tv viewer. It's like when people in our world say, whether ironically or not, that we're living in a simulation, nothing more. It's just Maddie commenting on the concept that there could always be a layer above. It is not a statement that we need to lend any credence to.
I think your theory is probably the most sensible one that eliminates all plot holes and fits everything together nicely.

        Anonymous

I would not dismiss her comment. It fits thematically for there to be more. We know there are at least 4 layers: Uploaded World->Simulated Real World->Real World (aka GodMaddie's reality)->SafeSurf's plane. If GodMaddie didn't get her Caspian rez right the first time, then what's to say SafeSurf got its message to Maddie right the first time when even it admits that "we are still learning" to Maddie and Caspian?

I mostly agree with this one, except I don't think there's a SafeSurf simulation. I think they're so advanced they manage to manipulate Reality Prime almost as if was their simulation, transcending spacetime and allowing them to tell the date to Maddie trough Caspian. With this sliver of hope, and being broken by the death of her son, Maddie prime finally accepted uploading herself in order to become Godmaddie and figure out how did Caspian even knew the date of the future.

But regardless of this, something left entirely for speculation is Maddie and Caspian's future. Will they relive it all all exactly as we already saw it, creating infinitely recursive simulations within simulations? Will they enjoy a less tragic life together? Will this new life be entirely embodied or will they eventually upload, effectively living forever within one of Godmaddies' simulations? If they reject upload, will they return to the state we saw them last once they "die"? Or did they program themselves for complete and definitive deletion after this new chance at life they went for?

If SafeSurf exists outside our plain of existence and can manipulate it at will and these manipulations cause different outcomes creating alternate timelines which is exactly what GodMaddie was doing, then our plain is effectively a simulation.
SafeSurf also mentions he is giving Caspian and Maddie the same invitation it received to go to the center of the galaxy, meaning there would be others that transcended and there's nothing saying these others would not want to manipulate reality as well for their own reasons. Meaning you'd have to have multiple realities for these multiple beings to manipulate so they do not step on each other's toes.

tldr: the show supports the idea that GodMaddie is part of a simulation herself.

      >happened to the Iran guy and the Israeli assassin when they fused.
They turned into a CI, the orange one that helps Caspian. It's not immediately clear it isn't Mist and they don't come up again, so it is a little confusing.

Holstrom was an exceptional character, the mirroring of him with Caspian was done well, along with his ending.
The evolution of the UI's felt like something that could have taken up an entire season, but watching them experience life beyond human capacity was nice for what we got.
It will always remain as a very peculiar show, created to fulfill a niche that disappeared before it could get its footing (Feel like the show was an attempt to digitalize the hour long drama, with covid as the inciting incident) approaching animation from such a serious place. Now wheres a physical copy for the future worlds.

Funny after how backups were such a central part to the plot, everyone just forgot that you could back people up the moment the kill virus required being a plot point. When the flaw still existed at least they had "everyone was really degraded by the time they realized it was happening so backups wouldn't do that much and they were working with limited hardware as independent actors" as an excuse when they were being stored on crystal holotech. Less so when British special intelligence lets their UI go into an anonymous server with no backup when it seems like they can be stored on a normal-sized HDD. But I guess that's not the kind of thing the show wanted to focus on.

Ooh also that Lucas Pope ass pull where "I'm not part of this terrorist extremist anti-UI group because of pro-humanity principals I'm part of it because I'm bitter about not being allowed in and I'm old. By the way, I'm going to shoot you now. Not sure why; I'm still a terrorist trying to kill UI, but I guess there might be some two year olds watching who haven't figured out I'm a bad person yet."

also, comparing this to lain is a really shallow critique because even though surface level concepts have overlap they're drastically different shows in terms of presentation and characterization and actual plot

Yeah, but gen alphas heard of Lain from their favorite Indian YouTuber or whatever, and then they came across this and because Gennies are smart, they make comparisons of the two with vague connections between them!

So... how woke is this show now that Season 2 is out?

      Anonymous

Black female astronaut + her sister is as woke as it gets. S2 has a UK-Iran-Israel love triangle (only partially kidding) which as as much accusatory as it is woke.

        Anonymous

        >Black female astronaut
She got rejected last minute if I remember S1 correctly so she is not an astronaut which is part of the reason she is so gung-ho about uploading.
        >her sister
The hell was woke about her?

And the Middle East stuff has nothing to do with wokeness. Two mortal enemies setting aside their difference to fight a bigger threat is an age old trope.

Nothing egregious. There is a single frame image that flashes on screen for a millisecond that includes gay weddings, but that was in the context of catching a character up to speed on the history he missed while in stasis. There's also a still of Trump being sworn in with some in the background looking confused.

          Anonymous

I don't know if you want to count it or not. Like I said, it is a single frame in a series of flash stills. If you blink you miss it. The only reason I saw it was because I played the part frame-by-frame, and in the context of the scene it was not promoting homosexuality, it was to get a character up to speed on what he missed.

            Anonymous

Well... I suppose we can still use that image then when someone complains about gays in cartoons

Two dumb ass needlessly unlikeable sassy black women that always spoke down to caspian and maddie, A pathetic dad that was ready to kill two teenagers, and two retarted annoying theiving kids. And how tf are they both white as shit when they have a black mother? shit was dumb. I hope that was the last of shit like that in the next episodes.

what safesurf is running in my opinion is not even a simulation he became time space itself, he evolved with the help of the aliens god like race to a point that even a dyson spheres, simulations is a thing from the past, he became a literal supernatural GOD, like biblical god, so safeguard timetravel back in time to meet God maddie (compared to safeguard Maddie is primitive inferior god that still need hardware to exist

      Anonymous

If SafeSurf is not the only god interfering with the timeline as is implied, then that would require multiple realities for the other gods to mold or else there would be conflict amongst them. And if a being can observe outside the universe, see all possible outcomes, and apply change, then that reality is in effect a simulation even if it is the "real world" which I think was the point of the ending and why Maddie saw her godhood as a facade and chose to live a normal life of bliss with Caspian.

That ending was depressing as hell, like she's not even with her orginal biological or UI family just a selectively bred replica of them. Still quite confused on if there's infinite recursion with multiverses within each recursion or if there is any hint of a base reality where Caspian saves SafeSurf without David. Honestly ends on some purgatory shit.

Caspian must have saved SafeSurf on his own originally, but GodMaddie had her dad intervene because she had to be sure this simulation would produce the results she needed because she was nearing the deadline she got from Caspian right before he died.

Caspian would have had to enlightened SafeSurf without David originally so SafeSurf could ascend and then time travel back to speak through Caspian to deliver the message to Maddie which motivates her to carry on and resurrect Caspian through her simulation a 100,000 years later.

Are those planet destroying cubes Maddie uses to clear out her personal solar system based on any pre-existing sci-fi concept?

Also, where the hell did she get enough material to create an average star-sized Dyson sphere? She'd have to hollow out a hundred thousand Earth sized planets to even come close and there's no way she could do that in just 117,000 years even if everything was automated.

I wouldn't worry too much about the logistics. The writers also said carbon dating was used to calculate the age of a billion year old meteor. But carbon-14 only has a half-life of around 5700 years so you can't use it to date things as old as the meteor.

Whatever happened to Caspian's fake dad? Last we see him was in Norway.
Also, the admin UIs said Caspian was the last of the original pantheon. If that is true, then what happened to the black astronaut lady? We know she made it out okay and even briefed the government on what happened after Caspian's "death."

Cary more than likely stayed in Norway to be captured by the feds and rat out Logarithms.
And Joey could’ve died during one of the Human attacks on the data centres.

Funny, waching Caspian talking with the human gov heads that they are selfish for not allowing the UI to finish the space elevator and with good points in a way makes Holstrom kinda right and he in fact kinda of won the argument.

i also have thoughts about ''season 3'' (episodes 7 and 8), i cant take from my mind the idea the writers originally hoped for maybe a season 3 and had a much larger idea.
like a season dedicated to a debate about living in the real world with your biological body accepting death vs be a immortal digital god.
i have the feeling the writers wanted that with the conflict between Maddie and david Jr

      Anonymous

imo the clearest indication that 7/8 weren't meant to be the end of this season is what mist says to caspian at the end of 6.
"It took time to extract each bit of the antiviral, but I think I got all of it""
Then immediately next episode "Safesurf is in your code and will kill you in a couple days unless you underclock."
Like Safesurf killing him was meant to be a mid season twist but they didn't have the time frame so just dumped it.

There's a bunch of stuff that wasn't addressed. I think the original plan (that nobody on the team will probably admit to) was for this to be a 3 season show and they sliced out a bunch of dangling plotlines to get the finale. Things like the Israeli-Iranian CI showing up out of nowhere and introducing himself as something greater and Chanda grinning as he died which to me was him using clones to be immortal because he was the first CI to really dive into self-propagation and his army of ghouls just kind of disappeared.
