This is part of the Peach problem more than it was a Mario problem. I didn't have a huge problem with who Mario was in this movie. There's never really a solid narrative in any of the games, which is fine, but when you make a movie your character has to have an arc. And if you're making a Mario movie where Mario is being introduced the Mushroom Kingdom for the first time, it's a classic fish out of water story and he's going to have to start off being incompetent to some degree. He's just a blue collar plumber from Brooklyn forced to be some kind of hero in a world that is completely alien and nonsensical. He needs to have heart and a can-do attitude. That's what makes him likable as a character. If he comes in and is just perfect at everything it's going to be a very boring movie. And the goal should be to get him to fail in ways that inexperienced players of the game fail in and show him getting better as the movie progresses. It's relatable because we all played Mario at some point and everyone is bad at Mario at first. We've all gotten used to how green turtle shells work only to be flummoxed by the edition of red shells and spiky shells five minutes later
