I've always taken the fact that the shields attract worms to imply the shields operate by causing some kind of vibrations at a very high frequency. So basically thumpers on steroids to a creature attuned to rhythmic disturbances.
Well that would make sense, I mean just based on their appearance they'd have to be vibrations of an electromagnetic field.
The part that gets me is the rhythm. Because assuming you're escorting a harvester, which is quite literally shaking the surface and virtually guaranteed to attract worms, what reason would there be to not wear a shield? At least inactive.
I mean if for some stupid reason there is a ground war in a worm field, where people won't be walking in an off-beat rhythm anyway, why wouldn't you have an active shield on? And wouldn't the shield ironically be off rhythm anyway, assuming you're in a fight? After all, the constant swinging will be frequently disabling and re-enabling the vibration.
So what context is there to not have a shield on, albeit disabled until necessary?
I've heard some anons say that the shields are supposed to drive worms crazy, like not just attract them, but I can't find anything definitive, or even conceptualize what that would imply versus what we've already seen. Are the worms going to start flying?

Worms are incredibly hard to kill and shields cause worms to frenzy. Turning a shield on is practically a death sentence in worm territory.
On Arrakis equipment breaks a lot because of the weather (super fast sand storms and electrical storms.) Part of the reason they use shit like Ornithopters is that unlike other engines they are less prone to breaking down as quickly in the environment. The more equipment you bring the more things will break down, the heavier spice harvesters and other things will be, the more it'll cost and the more time it'll take to fix.
You also have to bring in every peace of equipment you use from off planet which is very expensive in the Dune universe because the Spacing Guild has a monopoly.
