I bought a Quest 2 now that they're on a discount. Never used VR before, figured I'd see what the hype is. What a fricking joke. It looks horrible. It's mostly a visual experience and it's like looking through Vaseline. I have all sorts of rifle scopes, binoculars, camera lenses, and they look wonderful, and they have for 50+ years. Why does the VR helmet have 19th century tech in it?

      Anonymous

You have to connect it to your 4090.

Yeah man I can't wait until I can live in the stacks and just log off from work and go directly to living in WoW!

Easier than inventing a time machine to take you to 2004.

        Anonymous

I don't mean the 3D models in the games. The lenses themselves are blurry, make it difficult to focus, have such small sweet spots that I feel like I am always fighting any minor shift in headset position, force you to spin your head around rather than move your eyeballs, god rays beaming off of any text, etc. I wanted to watch a movie in the headset and I realized that it doesn't work because you can't view the big screen in the way you actually would IRL. Imagine watching a movie at the theater by craning your neck around with your eyes perfectly centered. You would have to sit twice as far form the screen to make sure it only sits in the center of your vision.

          Anonymous

I tried to find a old plate helmet that would restrict FOV as much as VR goggles do, but even the worst examples allow greater peripheral vision than VR does.

Quest 2 I found very lack luster but quest 3 is much more crisp. Oddly enough my old s8+ in the gear vr headset was best picture quality although it had significant screendoor effect going on. The thing I hate about quest is no eye tracking so you have to constantly be looking forward.

You don't understand how any of this works kid.
It's not about how impressive a technology is, it's about what problems it solves and what use cases it has. Even the most impressive technology will be tossed into a corner and forgotten after a week if it serves no actual purpose.
Smartphones are phones, calenders, navigation devices, clocks, alarms, cameras, game consoles, instant messaging device, payment devices, digital IDs, literally fricking anything you fricking need.
And all of that on a touch interface that actual toddlers can intuitively use.
And it's convenient. Takes 1 second to pull out your phone and use any of its features.

the lenses counter-focus so your resting/natural eye state translates to clear images.

anyway he told me they've known it isn't what they wanted it to be for a while. it was supposed to launch with a load of AR stuff that you could actually use out of the house (real time maps/directions like you're a walking through a GPS was the one he was working on and it never came off) and be all round much more lightweight and attractive to wear. the software guys blame the hardware guys, while the hardware guys blame the software guys. there's a bit of a civil war over it.

Yeah and you'd be dealing with shitty compressed video instead with the Quest headsets. You have to increase the rendering resolution and waste so much battery with decoding a bazillion mbs of bitrate that it ends up having worse image quality and performance than an Index despite it having ancient display hardware by comparison.
I'll upgrade from my Quest 2 the day they put a thunderbolt port on it so it can stream latency-free, compression-free actual video data from a GPU's display port. But they don't care about PC VR at all so it'll never happen.

it's not a matter of 'looking for', it's a matter of noticing you're never as relaxed as you are looking at a actual big screen far away from you.

If the tech was cheap and not nauseating I'd totally buy a pair and use it lying down. When you think about it there's really no reason why work has to be done sitting at a desk, you know? I'm intrigued by the idea that I could go on a sailing trip or something similar like an extended car trip and still have the semblance of watching movies on a big screen before going to bed in a small bunk. I doubt that would really work though and obviously you won't be playing any VR games while lying down. That sounds like it would give you motion sickness in five seconds.

I use my Oculus (sorry, Meta) 2 a lot and that strap looks incredibly uncomfortable. Any front-heavy VR without a halo style support is basically useless because you can't use for more than 20 minutes due to the weight pulling on your face.

      Anonymous

You need a place to put a tv or monitor. This tech is invested in because the powers that be believe we'll all have to live in shitty little apartments with no space in the future due to population concentration, to escape storms and floods and wildfires etc. It'll also be a matter of resource management, with everyone having a pair of goggles and doing both their work and play through them instead of having several different devices that all take up valuable metals and electricity only to be used once a day or less.

        Anonymous

Don't forget how this finally solves the issue of video piracy. At least if they can work out how to cut your eyes out and give you shiny metal ones instead. Looking at something you shouldn't be? Blacked out.

I wouldn't mind one eye implant that lets me zoom in, see different colour spectrums or record stuff, but I'd never want both. Even if there's no censorship from corporations you'd still be bombarded by AR ads and run the risk of going blind if you get hacked. If you only have one implant you can just "close" that eye when walking through the street that's got really annoying ads and still see. Also you can't be fooled by real-time deepfake holograms.

It's a hassle to put it on VS just relaxing sitting back.

VR is impressive for like a week or if you used it in a friend's house for 20 minutes (and assume you'd play for hours), but it's actually pretty tiring, your face bones are mushed, your neck gets fricked, the weight distribution is never quite right etc.

Best use case for VR is gaming and even then only a few genres benefit. Any kind of simulator like racing or flight sims are a good fit because it gives you full 180 degrees view of your wienerpit by just using your neck to intuitively look around, no need to strap a bunch of monitors to each other to get good fov, it's a rare case where VR is both cheaper and more convenient, in most other use cases it's less convenient and more expensive.
Meta has failed to sell VR to normies so I don't see how Apple can do any different. The friction of putting on the headset is already enough to make it worse than a phone for most people and most things that a phone already does well.

Trial and error, if they hadn't done this, no one else would and if it's in the name of advancing the tech and they're the only firm capable of eating huge losses on R&D, then so be it.

I was excited and was about to pull the trigger on buying one but I heard that the FOV is very small compared to pretty much any other headset out there. The screen quality does have pixelation and glare issues as well. Every reviewer has pretty much summed it up as "yea it's cool but not cool enough for you to want to use it in replace of a screen". The idea of watching 3d 4k movies sounds cool but the tech just isn't quite there yet to justify using it.

I have been watching movies using a Quest 2 for a while. There used to be a VRChat that would pirate any movie you wanted and play it on a big screen. It was pretty sweet. It got taken down a couple month ago. It is what convinced me to buy a projector though. I realized how much better a big screen is.

I find Apple fanboys laughable as does anyone who has actually worked in technology long term,. Apple fanboys are the idiot who likes to be ripped off by unscrupulous homosexuals who tell them they have great taste and are special people while taking all their money and giving them overpriced paywall garbage that self destructs.
