          Anonymous

Only thing Family Guy BTFO'd is itself lol. Calling Bojack "normal words but a horse guy" is almost objectively wrong regardless of your opinion on the show because 60% of Bojack's comedy comes from visual gags, puns, and jokes about the fact that they are animals.

If you're going to try and "BTFO" a show, you at least have to make a valid argument. All Family Guy did is make their own writers look moronic with that gag.

Literally my only real issue with Rick and Morty is that more often than not the family gets a little too smug and snarky nowadays. I actually have a theory that Roiland was largely to thank for the more campy sitcom feeling of their S1 dynamics. He seemed like the type who genuinely valued balancing some sincerity and heart with the more fricked up alternate universe shit, whereas Dan Harmon seems to care more about being subversive 24/7 and relying on awkward sex jokes.

It knew how to be smart without getting pretentious and how to be meta without getting insincere. I really don't get why Harmon felt the need to up the cynicism as they went along. It's fun to watch a show where you actually LIKE the characters. Now you're just miserable half the time.

I genuinely think Beth doesn't love or give a shit about anyone in her family aside from Rick.

Nahh plenty of Rick and Morty writers know their shit. Night Family was amazing. But those S1 fourth wall-breaking send-offs were definitely pulled straight out of Roiland's old internet cartoons. It's a bummer he couldn't stay motivated and maintain that same chill vision for more than 2 seasons.

Damn is VERY influenced by outside elements. The notable decline of Community was because he was reading the shows subreddit and saw they liked the cartoony, "meta" bullshit and amped it up in order to give the people what they wanted. R&M was "le heccin NIHILISM!" and people responded highly to the depressing shit they would occasionally pepper in, so hey- gotta give the people what they want, right?

And that's why that keeps happening to Dan Harmon programs.

Dan Harmon allowed his divorce to make him all emo and he used the show to vent his feelings and through off the balance. I made a meme a while ago comparing Dan Harmon to the creator of moral orel. it's the attached pic if you care to read it.

So is Beth basically Justin Roiland's idea of the perfect daughter?

Beth is basically a mindbroken frickdoll for Rick and she will sick his dick and rim his butthole quite literally no matter what he does.

Like, this very easily goes way beyond abandonment issues and into "I want my dad and one of his clones to spit roast me all night". She literally does not care about ANYONE other than Rick in the show.

            >they built up this idea of an evil morty and did nothing with it after six seasons
It started strengthening Rick and Morty's bond to treat them more as equals (later solidified with the S6 finale) while also introducing a much bigger multiverse and villain for the show than we'd previously been aware of.

The """anticlimactic""" reveal that Evil Morty wasn't really evil all along has been one of the show's better subversions, and sending him off that way just works. Are there seriously people who felt cheated out of his arc?

              Anonymous

it's not really a subversion, i don't think he was considered "evil" for any reason other than running the citadel

i don't get the point of bringing a character into the show, saying maybe they will maybe they won't become evil, they continue to do nothing, and then they're gone

              it's bad writing

Ricklantis Mixup is a good episode despite being sandwiched in a shit season. Not even for the evil Morty stuff either, I actually just think the detective plotline is good and the episode as a whole is devoid of the annoying humor that ruins the rest of the show from that point on. It's basically the last time the show actually took itself seriously.

                >muh Season 3 is shit
The only bad episodes are Vindicators and ABCs of Beth. The rest of the season is aces. You see how each of the family members cope with Beth & Jerry's separation, there are tons of cool sci-fi concepts, and even more iconic scenes or jokes. S3 also houses one of my favorite episodes: the Detox episode.

I hope you can at least admit that Seasons 3-4 are stronger than 5-6, even if the series as a whole never fully went to shit; it just stopped being consistently good. Nowadays, you never know what you're gonna get when you tune in (in a bad way).

Why is it that so few shows can pull off the "cast made up of buttholes that are still fun to watch" dynamic?
The best examples I can think of are Seinfeld and Always Sunny.

R&M characters are just unfunny sociopaths a lot of the time

I agree with this. The characters are supposed to be universally unlikeable (liars, grifters cheaters).

The problem becomes the writers tend to make them into straw man for their views (making their character into a politician the writer doesn’t like). Once they do this the characters lose their appeal because, instead of just being a story about shitty people, it starts to feel like the writers are preaching their views to the audience.

Writing is hard. I'm trying to make my own animations using the story circle method since i really loved R&M s1/2 (with OC world/characters of course). I have some ideas for possible animations (im aiming at 3-6 minutes long time run), but man figuring out just how to introduce the characters has been far harder than i thought. I really dont like exposition dumps, but I need to name them/show their abilities and have it be entertaining enough.

          Anonymous

Introduce them showing either what they do for a living or for fun. Or have them all do the same activity together to highlight how different their personalities are.

            Anonymous

I figure it needs to be a action based as at least hook wise (since the animations are kinda gonna be based around that a lot too, in terms of scenarios). Funny thing is that ive done countless animated parodies over the years to hundreds of millions of views, and had no real problem staging or writing those, but with my own characters/world its like, holy shit, how do you pick and choose. Everything sounds good, but i know for a fact that I need to cement the characters and give them hard lines because a flawless op characters really arent fun.

A show doesn’t have to have relatable or nice characters you can root for to be good, it’s always sunny is a great show and the gang are completely horrible people. That said, it’s clear they are attempting to make the family seem relatable and like something you can root for unlike the gang, which is a horrible decision because of what you said.
