Why wouldn't it? It's probably a standard ordinance. Speeders are constantly in use for towing, or attacking Imperial walkers.

Why would toe cables be included on an aircraft to begin with? Even as a kid I thought that was weird. Convenient if you want to trip up a giant mechanical dinosaur, but weird.

      Anonymous

      >Why would toe cables be included on an aircraft to begin with?
Same reason why you keep a spare tire in your car. Just in case you need it for something (like towing a ship or some other vehicle) back to base.

        Anonymous

That doesn't make sense. It would be smashing around behind you and probably cause you to crash. Tow cables work for ground vehicles, not for aircraft.

That's how they take off. They hook a rope to a tow plane and take off. Alternatively launched tows are an option, done with a really long tow rope and a winch.

Tanks usually have tow cables to drag other tanks of vehicles out of the mud of put them back on their tracks.
Since those speeders are made for snowy planets, maybe they use those cables to tow things out of the snow

Just attack from the sides or straight above and you'd be almost completely safe. That thing is just a big fricking target. Do the rebels seriously not have anything like bombs or missiles? A real world fighter jet or helicopter would just flat out annihilate sucha poorly designed vehicle

No, that's cool, every story deserves a little scrutiny and it should be able to stand a few questions. That's all right, that's how stories are made.

What I don't get is that Star Wars is so full of nonsense but this homosexual chose to strike a fairly reasonable thing. Real life military vehicles have tow cables and being a snow setting getting stuck in ice or having the vehicle freeze and malfunction is pretty common. It's not so hard to figure out if you think about it for five minutes.

        Anonymous

The thing is that in a universe like star wars you would expect something like a tractor beam to be used for towing and not a steel cable.

          Anonymous

Way more finicky. And you'd have to deal with particles like snow.
...I don't remember them being used on planets in the EU. Possible that the tech only works in a zero-G environment.

          >you would expect something like a tractor beam to be used for towing and not a steel cable.
That would require a bigger power plant to power both the engine/repulsors and the tractor beam.

Maybe the strong and well equipped Empire has those, but the plucky underdog rebels probably don't.

  8. 2 years ago

    Yeah I member.
    Why tow cables?
As a kid living in way boonies I was driving a 4x4 truck at 12.
Just on back roads and muddy.
I towed out other people when they got stuck during storms.
I've dug myself out of sandpit and mud puts. Used chains to drag trees and posts.
Everything is a pain to tow and requires good planning, angles to move, balance of weight, power.
So a speeder just cabling shit off the ground would, I imagine, just cause the speeder to crash or rip its back off or cause the driver a snapped spine whiplash.
If say it was anything heavier than a wookie.
And the cables would have started immediately loosening as so as the let go.
Unless they were some super magnetic cables? Or covered with some sort of sticky grease like Saving Ryan's Privates sticky bombs.
The atat design was shit too.
Fricking slow walking elephant frames? Why?
Elephants are great runners when they want to kill you or escape. Why didn't the atat run?

at first I thought "they should have set up that the snow speeders had tow cables by Luke or somebody having to use the tow cables for their primary purpose. then once it's set up they can bring tow cables back as a brilliant way to take out the at-ats"

but frick that "setup/payoff" shit. it's a movie-y thing that loses its power when you recognize it. instead just spring the solution to the problem on the audience, and let them piece together why it existed afterward.

Look up british officers guides in ww1, they also had insanly high casualties compared to the french for the reasons you state. It was a hold over from the line battle napoleon era military philosophy where officers needed to calmy walk their troops through hails of fire or cavalry charges and it was more important to be seen to be calm by your own troops when shit was going down than to camouflage yourself from the enemy.

stop nitpicking that the tow cables are not perfect or woudnt work.
the scene works because; slow approaching threat. rebels have a way of fighting back that requires skill.
the premise builds tension, which is good for a movie. compare it to the end of the last jedi.
empire have walkers, they are advancing. rebels have silly little ships that cant fly high at all and no ability to harm the walkers. then 2 leads crash to make a dumb statement.
