It's not really political in any way.

      Why is this about politics?
It’s about an interesting period of history that even most Viking LARPers don’t know shit about. And the link I downloaded things on kept being interrupted by my internet dropping out and is only in French.

I will settle for a non-subbed link so long as I can use it to download these properly.

I think it's funny how the modern right, who stereotypically is stubborn about their Christian faith, have picked up the Pagans as friends, when like a century or two ago, hard Christians would've converted or cleansed them from the local population

There are relatively very few legitimate pagan worshippers, most of them following the norse stuff are just doing it for the aesthetic.
Besides that, whether or not they are authentic pagans, its not that difficult to put together that people who believe in a higher power will find more in common with each other than with those who don't, right wing factions today pick up on that.

The thing is, the odds of it being picked up by anyone else was already small. Has any notable English streaming service or TV channel acquired Anatane? Droners? Imago? Marblegen? No. The market for non-toddler animation done outside of "the system" is dire. Now that VRV is dead, who knows if the second season of Lastman will ever get a dub.

              I meant location
              US? UK? Canada?

It's dubbed in Montreal, as the show was co-produced there.

                >It's dubbed in Montreal, as the show was co-produced there.
You would think being produced in Canada, it would be on TV somewhere here

                Anonymous

The Bentkey Android app, which is only a few months old and only available in the U.S., has 5x the downloads Ameba's multi-year old one on Google Play. The availability on Prime seems very spotty and that service buries its non-original content anyway. That's one of those, "if a tree falls down in the forest but no one's around, does it make a sound?" kind of things.

As for Canadian TV, it's kind of a perfect example of how bad things are. Take a look at what's on the kids broadcasters. Corus (which owns YTV, the channel previously known as Teletoon, etc.) has pretty much given up on shows produced outside of the big American studios, with the few Canadian productions largely being stuff they produce in-house or are legally required to make in Quebec. The English public broadcasters don't really deal much in non-toddler stuff. WildBrain only picks up a handful of shows and it's usually aimed at girls or is gender neutral.

                Anonymous

I mean some of that is quality. "We're making our own version of Brooklyn 99. It will almost completely re-use the scripts, it's just a different setting and cast" is the sort of innovation we're seeing these days.

I'm really hoping WildBrain picks it up. They already have that Mormon-funded show on their channels

                Anonymous

I'd argue that the hideous streaming wars are a big part of why animation isn't getting picked up - it's not a safe investment and everyone is trying to hedge their bets and circle their wagons as they all try to make their own streaming service.
And stuff like The Daily Wire wanting their own streaming service ("with less hookers and blackjack!") makes that worse.

                Anonymous

The issue is audience fragmentation and ultimately, that was happening regardless of the streaming wars. In the '90s and early '00s, you had cable channels siphon viewers from the broadcast networks. Then that turned into constantly updated video games, UGC platforms and Netflix - which have all been competing with linear for audiences for a long time now.

The end result is that so many options have led to the average show having smaller audiences than ever before. That's pretty much killed linear, which is why the only stuff still being made in that space are live events, episodic cop/doctor series for the elderly and cheap to make reality shows. The problem is that streaming hasn't been as profitable as linear used to be. For years, those companies ignored that in the hopes that constant growth would eventually pull them out of that hole. It hasn't, growth has slowed and interests rates are higher, so they're cutting back on spending and adding commercials.

The belt tightening, vertical integration (outside of Sony, every major Hollywood studio has their own streaming service) and renewed push to, you know, make money, has hurt the acquisitions market. With a smaller budget, these companies would rather divert their money to shows they own (or at the very least, are established brands) than licensing out someone else's work and building a brand for them.

If it’s dubbed in Canada then they probably got the dub alright.
Stuff like the Mysterious Cities of Gold alway had problems where American networks changed too much around or more usually gave the wrong sort of voices.

I feel like that distinction is very tenuous when mainstream streaming platforms are anything but apolitical. Netflix literally finances Obama-produced movies and at one point, attempted to make an "Anti-Racist Baby" animated series (thankfully, it got aborted). Disney has done plenty of things over the years that were transparently ideologically driven. I mean, this is the company that puts LGBT content in $200 million kids movies. No company in their right mind would do that because it only hurts the boxoffice and movies that expensive can't afford to turn people off.

          >"Anti-Racist Baby" animated series
In fairness it was meant to be a few animated "don't be a bigot" PSAs, with a short adaptation of "Anti-Racist Baby" meant to be the first in the series. The reporting made it seem like they were trying to turn that one book-for-toddlers into an animated series, but it was just "Netflix is going to animate some PSAs based on books" not a proper animated series.

              Anonymous

That only further suggests it was an ideologically driven project, because that's not a format anyone pays Netflix to watch.

                Anonymous

Here I shrug. It was green lit during that golden period when Netflix was throwing money at lots of animated projects. I'm not saying it was a GOOD idea, but it wasn't "Anti Racism Baby: The Animated Series." It was going to be a series of musical animated short PSAs apparently with an emphasis on unusual art styles, with the ARB adaptation just being the headliner for the project.

                >throwing money at endless series?
It was foreseen that netflix would quickly run out of money, because they lack the corporate funding that prime video or disney+ have

          Anonymous

That same company puts out an endless stream of Christian themed media and props up hacky old boomer comedians whose only joke is le troon. Obama being a media producer says less about the politicization of media and more about the mediafication of politics, an ongoing process since at least Reagan where increasing numbers of politicos are failed and or former hollywood types. It's not just things like Obama making movies or a reality TV show host president, it's Ben Shapiro the failed screenwriter and more malingnantly influencers turned politicians. Netflix like any corporate entity is definitionally valueless and legally obligated to only pursue profits. If they don't ruthlessly extract profit then other streaming services will.

To make the maximum amount of money as a *family entertainment* brand its just good business to host a diverse selection of politically oriented material. You want households to have Netflix accounts that every member of the family finds enjoyable on some level. The majority of their consumers are either socially liberal or social minorities themselves. Alienating that massive demographic by shoveling out right wing media makes no sense and is made worse by a poverty of creative right wingers. Similarly however they won't host a slate of purely liberal coded media because that would alienate members of the family, fewer members but customers nonetheless. It's best to make sure that grandma gets her shitty Christmas propaganda picture and that her grand daughter can watch shows that don't tell her she will be tortured eternally for loving a woman.

To me that isn't a political orientation towards any kind of actual social cohesion. It's a cynical attempt to capitalize on and aggravate the sharp political divide we are experiencing at the moment. A divide that frankly speaking Trump made significantly deeper by pushing so many young people to the left.

            Anonymous

this is also why "right wing streaming services" are doomed to essentially fighting over the same dwindling demographics unless they do what they've done here and shore up their content with non political material that reflects common social sentiment.

      >guess "it's vaguely historical" terrified services like Netflix and Amazon into thinking nobody would watch
I don't think that's the problem. The whole thing is about magic and dead gods during medieval times so it's pretty on par with other shows on these platforms (vox machina on amazon for example, or Hilda / The ragon Prince on Netflix).
The reality is that most studios from countries that aren't either in north america or in japan struggle immensely to finance their animated productions. Andarta has been making banger teasers over banger teasers and (afaik) still none of their IPs production was financed despite them actively seeking out streaming services to produce their shows.
The only two french studios that are doing fine are Fortiche because RIOT bucks and La Cachette because they have been working with Tartakovsky

You could do a second series based on Williams grandsons

Medieval politics is personal and William did a lot of politics in his life.
It’s almost sad that a brush with ancient pagan gods while in hiding would probably be some of his happiness memories.
Compared to how his adult life and children went.

I've been watching and I'm at episode 6 now.
The series has a good pacing and english dub is quite ok. Characters are interesting and I'm in love with the design.
I'm currently playing urban fantasy TTRPG with France as its setting and we're doing some exploration of its history in order to uncover some mysteries. Watching this series is bringing me joy. Truly, a cozy animation.

This makes me sad, however, on not watching more french animation. Code Lyoko was one of my favourite cartoons during my childhood. French people are indeed creative. French TTRPG are pretty good.

I've seen some recomendations on french animation on this thread and I'll note it down to watch later.

Any other recommendations you all got?
