Jesus no wonder nick struggles to find another cash cow like spongebob, most of the shows they greenlit are shit
It's All Fucked Shirt $22.14 |
Nothing Ever Happens Shirt $21.68 |
It's All Fucked Shirt $22.14 |
the executives are the issue, they're probably complete fricking dumbasses with obviously terrible decision making skills.
I mean, that's true.
Really, Nickelodeon needs a significant restructuring in order to actually create a genuine success.
The worst part is that nick literally never greenlights anything that doesn't resemble spongebob
No, what's even worse is the number of promising pilots with ACTUAL FAN DEMAND that Nick's been sitting on for the last decade. Nick even went the extra mile of releasing each pilot publicly--likely to gauge audience response--yet they continue to resort to failed SpongeBob expys.
Now we've gotten to a point where they truly don't care to even hide their overreliance on the Sponge and have simply committed to forcing out spin-off after spin-off after spin-off. I'm so tired of this shit.
Seriously, someone in the company needs to start saying "No."
man I was really hoping top right would be a series, I honestly enjoyed the short. I'm still sad over how bad the make fiends creator got fricked over by nick
>Otis and Craig were voiced by the same guy
I'm embarrassed to admit I never put 2 and 2 together.
Things like this only makes me wish the Viacom executives get eviscerated in the most horrible way and thrown to the wolves
Industryanon here Disney actually looks at these pilots for potential buyouts for Disney Channel and Disney+ we just acquired pic related from Nickelodeon as Cinemaphile speculated and is on early development at the studio as a Disney Channel show.
Disney is looking to buy these two for potential Disney Channel shows on 2026, we always laugh at Disney legal that Nickelodeon makes our job more easy beacuse they produce the pilots of our next animated hits while they just are focusing on keep milking Spongebob as opposed to take the same risk that made Spongebob sucessful.
Torum Tellum has potential, though i worry it could be too annoying
What are the ones on the top left and bottom right called?
Left
The Girl From Dinosaur Island
Right
>Ice Station Zedonk
Nine of the themes for these shows is simple enough. Spongebob was a simple nautical theme with settings and characters that all fit together, and the gags revolved around that.
This list is a bunch of nothing.
Make middlemost post's entire world a giant post office. Every facet of every characters life revolves around the inside of a giant post office. The local store is a hollowed out tape dispenser. The local pool is a water fountain with a stapler for a diving board. The main character is a stamp who lives like a bushman in a open stamp book stood up like a tent. The outside of the post office is some mysterious unknown to be used as various plot devices. And most importantly the main characters need a variety of temperaments and personalities. No matter how well you think test audiences respond to wacky zany and loud. Use actual variety.
What the frick are creators doing? None of these shows are coherent. They're a bunch of nothing where the only unifying feature is that everyone is various types of the same annoying personality.
I was so confused when I watched the first episode of middlemost. There was no real introduction into the world are characters, aside from maybe the theme song. It felt kind of aimless
>There was no real introduction into the world are characters, aside from maybe the theme song.
Exactly like spongebob. Theme song tells you everything you need to know about him. Show is simple enough it grabs you.
I disagree. help wanted was a great first episode (help wanted) which established spongebob as a character and what he was all about than this. if you're talking about in general, I think spongebob just had. a more solid and understandable/interesting world than middlepost
I think the first quarter of SpongeBob's Season 1 was suppose to be the introduction of Bikini Bottom, not just Help Wanted.
true
They're all basically aimless. Which wouldn't be so bad if they had some clever iconic world to exist in with strong personalities that bounced off each other, naturally creating coherent and setting-relevant hijinks. But none of them have that. Maybe because the hack writers and showrunners are all the same brand of personality just like their characters, so they have to compensate with wacky crazy weird environments and themes that nobody outside their industry addled brains can even follow.
Bad chemistry for that brand of entertainment. If you're making a fun show to be funny, then you need natural conflict that arises from the contrast of dispositions. And I mean conflict that drives the narrative, not just disagreements or drama between characters. And also to treat the situations with fairness as an author so that characters who start conflict, albeit funny, still get their comeuppance for a sense of closure to the viewer.
>And most importantly the main characters need a variety of temperaments and personalities.
I haven't really watched Middlemost Post, but they at least did the bare minimum of pairing an impulsive, happy-go-lucky protagonist with a more straight-laced and cautious father(?) figure. The only problem is these two don't make for a very novel or even engaging duo, and the writing really did rely on WACKY ZANY LOUD more often than not.
Nickelodeon really does have a problem where the toons it produces tend to be rather juvenile compared to the other main children's networks. Nick doesn't even TRY to push for broad appeal anymore.
>where the toons it produces tend to be rather juvenile compared to the other main children's networks. Nick doesn't even TRY to push for broad appeal anymore
weird considering the actually baby channel PBS has more shows I can actually enjoy
you might just be autistic
ellinor wonders why is fun to watch
>you might just be autistic
Welcome to Cinemaphile - Comics & Cartoons
>show is too unfocused
>needs more variety
Pick one.
It's just wacky rainbow multicultural island. Other shows have done similar. It's not the greatest but it's one of the few shows on near-basic cable I can actually watch. Ok, so they made the walrus a lesbian. Nobody's perfect.
Ollie's Pack could probably go on that list too. It tried to coat=tail Owl House et al but with the boy the monster hunter angle but never coalesced. It felt like they were trying to introduce lore but the anime-style ease-in first season doesn't work with western shows.
Her sisters are cuter. She just reminds me too much of Mayim Bialik.
I grabbed that from Sporty Parker. She may have shown up in the background since but it's hard to tell because there's a few other green plant girls around.
>Her sisters are cuter.
post em pls
I don't have to pick one.
The show's environment and themes are too complex and disjointed for what the show is. While the characters are in desperate need of defining dispositional variety to make them distinct enough to clash in some way. Those clashes are what generate intrigue in narratives.
You shouldn't expect kids to take the time to learn the complicated world of a show about a bunch of pointless characters who just exist to say/do wacky stuff on a screen. You might as well animate a bunch of characters all hitting themselves over the head with a mallet in a loop while walking through a wacky world where wacky stuff is going on in the background.
People like characters. You drive all storytelling through the characters. Intrigue through the characters would give incentive to learn a complex disjointed environment if you absolutely need to have one. The interplay of differences between characters is what engages a viewer or a reader. This principle exists whether the actual storytelling is complex or not. From the most basic Sesame Street interactions, to looney tunes, to the grittiest action shows.
Having a unifying theme and environment is essential to giving a viewer a sense of familiarity and allowing them to more comfortably suspend their disbelief, as well as making the process of a new viewer tuning in very smooth. It makes things easier to follow, which is ideal for kids. However it's not quite as important as having a variety of personalities.
Variety of conflicting characters = good story
Simple unified world + character variety = great show
Variety world + samey characters = noise on a screen
There's something to be said about the tone interactions between setting and characters as well but that's another can of worms. Generally kid shows don't have to worry about that, but it's kino when they do.
>samey characters
It sounds like you only watched a couple episodes. Aside from the mains, youve got::
-not-sandy cheeks,
-conniving mayor and not-smithers constantly trying to get rid of angus and his ship
-extreme sports girl
-meathead dudebros
-old crusty scorpion guy
-snooty rich people
-stoner guy
-spooky witch lady
etc. etc. If the rest come off generic (including Pam) it's because they're supposed to be. They're (middle)mostly background characters. They're even color/species-coded for the most part so you can tell their character type. They're practically holding your hand in that regard. The only ones that are wacky for wacky's sake are the Reggies, but they're like MMP's answer to wackyland anyway. The worst you can say is it does try too hard to fit the Spongebob roster mold.
You're right that I only gave middlemost 2.5 episodes before moving on. I don't know the ones you listed but ideally you want your main characters to be the most engaging of the cast.
Sure these characters sound like they've covered some interesting tropes. But besides maybe the mayor, are they driving the key events of the episodes because of the way they are? Their interaction with the main cast in order to build the narrative is their most vital reason for existing. Do they hold a grudge? Does their stubbornness cause an avoidable catastrophe? Are they so overly talented or overly attached the cast ends up in over their heads?
And even more importantly are they all genuinely diverse in their dispositions, or are they all eventually prone to outbursts of goofiness, undermining their roles for the sake of making a moment silly? Sometimes you need to sacrifice a minor reaction or a gag to build up a much bigger and more satisfying joke, but many many writers instead choose to sacrifice the integrity of their character to make a silly face or dumb moment for easy comedic gratification. But that kind of thing turns everyone into samey characters for the sake of wacky. Even if their character descriptions don't necessarily say they're wacky.
This isn't just about middlemost post, it's about all those shows on OP's list. It's all very sloppy and doesn't retain audiences, it all ends up being a bunch of directionless nothing where the point of watching is to see colors flash and scream and maybe mimic some human behaviors for the sake of being relatable. But it seems writers are getting worse and worse at being human.
I don't blame you. Even I find it a bit of a slog sometimes and I'm surprised it got a second season.
To give you some examples regarding the characters though, the mayor has a grudge because when Angus's ship got stranded on middlemost mountain, it left his residence in perpetual shadow.
In the extreme girl's (more of an adventure junkie actually)second appearance, she decided to run for mayor because it sounded like a fun job, with predictable results.
Nick by FAR has to be one of the most autistically Ran “MONEY MONEY, BIG NUMBER NOW NOW NOW” Companies out there
They messed out the lore based cartoons phenomenon in the 2010s by not having a lore centric cartoon like gravity falls to compete with the other networks
They had the legend of korra but they treated it so awfully the final episode didn't even aired on TV until months after it premiered online plus in its later years korra has gotten a mediocre reception
So it was all for nothing
I still don't get what went wrong with Monsters Abroad. That would've been a HIT.
>Steven universe ass lookin shit
Nah
Seeing all those pilots collecting dust depresses me. Animation really is never going to get better, huh
Until the creative leads start taking executive positions again like they did in the early-mid 1900s, then no. And in today's economy, nobody wants to take financial risks, which is why they have economic businessmen at the top. Problem is they usually don't have a creative bone in their body. Every decision they make is either built off of outdated statistics/trends, focus groups full of moronic people/stupid children, or personal biases against certain types of entertainment, all in a move to make the most money while risking the least amount.
I can't say much for Nick and Warner, but Disney's been knocking it out of the park lately. Every one of their new cartoons has been a banger. Here's hoping Chapek's layoffs don't target animation specifically.
what is this
Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur. This shit was delayed TWICE, but the wait seems to have been worth it. It's finally coming out early next year. I love how many current Disney cartoons have been leaning into the musical aspect: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pzY7Y0dYHNU&t=2s
Both the mom and grandma can get it
>Black people
I will not watch your cartoon
Crazy bastard.
People got tired of waiting.
>People got tired of waiting.
Some people who have Nicktoons in Europe to watch the rest of the second season didn't get tired of waiting fot the online release.
>Here's hoping Chapek's layoffs don't target animation specifically.
It's only for the parks division from many Imagineers at Twitter.
sex with Lily
Please direct me to every episode this qt appears in
Ms. Pam had the more frickable design.
Forgot pic.

Frick off Bluemaxwell. Don't you have Camp Lazlo and Ren and stimpy threads to be keeping alive?
Sanjay and Craig was kino though.
Right on. This is now a Sanjay and Craig thread.
Honestly, this is one of the better 2010’s Nicktoons and it had just as much qts as Middlemost and Breadwinners. (And the latter show was just shit)
It's Pony was RIGHT THERE MAN
I still don’t get what happened to all the fans who disappeared between Seasons 1 and 2. It was like night & day.
In their infinite wisdom, Nick moved the show to Nicktoons to make room for Middlemost Post.
It's too bad. They still did some brilliant work in season 2, like the episode about the park tagger, and the one that took the piss out of shipping. If there's one silver lining, the show will forever be remembered without a downslide, as so happens with so many zombie shows networks decided to milk.
It’s one nicktoons now though, right?

why are Cinemaphiletroons so easily filtered by kino???
The only one I can’t see anyone calling kino is Bunsen because it’s post-TUFF Hartman.
Nickelodeon was doing the exact same thing before SpongeBob with tripe like CatDog. They were too prideful to accept ren and Stimpy ( they still have a limited number of episodes on Paramount Plus) but couldn't do anything else but wish they still had Ren and stimpy. It shows that we need to build a animation field where actual quality animation can flourish, instead of looking towards dozens of hacks to try to imitate quality animation
Animation industry opinion faking based
This is a Tumblr Millennials sort of thing. Extremely little appeal to kids. And they don't believe in Beauty so normies would have little interest
Do you think actual kids want to see these or old twitter/tumblr want to see these? Big difference
I mean most of the really popular cartoons nowadays seem to owe their success because of the Tumblr/Twitter crowd, so there's obviously some merit in trying to appeal to them
That's because creators wising up and realizing pitching stuff to Nick is a bad idea.
Hey sometimes you get desperate and will pitch to just about anyone. I'm sure plenty of artists who pitched or even successfully sold their pilots to Nick did it at least somewhat reluctantly.
Nick executives don't understand that they're the problem. Spongebob was a success because it had a unique flavor and humor to it. Now we have a sea of Spongebob clones. Nothing stands out.
>tfw Sanjay and Craig and PGBC were favorites of mine as a teenager
Like I was really getting into Adult Swim at that time enjoying shit like Superjail and ATHF. Even if I was losing faith on Nickelodeon at that time, there were still some shows I liked watching though. I couldn't really get into Breadwinners because it was too repetitive.
Also, thanks for not including Robot and Monster here because that show was surpassingly great and another favorite in my teen years. Frick Nick for scrapping the second season.
I liked the style but hated how much robot was mistreated
Now that we are speaking of Nickelodeon BS, Dana Simpson mentioned that the adaptation of Phoebe and Her Unicorn is still on development but that they had to make Max as part of the main cast beacuse Nick felt that the show won't attract boys if the mc is all female.
The funniest thing is that Dana mentioned that Disney was the most interested on adapting the book alongside the other bidders who where Netflix,Dreamworks and Apple
If Dana choosed one of the four instead of Nick probably Phoebe and Her Unicorn would have been out by now.
And see, that's the problem. I think some of the execs are genuinely sexist. I mean, we already have a lot of shows with guys in them.
We saw that with 'The Casagrandes': they wanted Sid to have a brother, but one of the writers objected, saying they have enough boys already.
my understanding of this is Nickelodeon wants the show to be a certain way and Dana wants it to be another way, which is why the show is in development a year later. Lincoln Pierce's Max & The Midknights (another book adaptation) was announced last year and already entered production, so it doesn't make since for this not to be being produced right now. It seems most likely to me Dana's literally holding her show from making any progress just because it's not the way she wants it to be. Nick probably wouldn't have announced the show so soon if they knew Dana would be a hard person to work with
I don't know, episodic adventures of a girl and unicorn? It can't be any more complicated than that.
You didn't read the article? They said Nickelodeon wanted the show to emphasize Max because the executives thought its current form didn't attract enough of them.
if Dana didn't interfere and just let nick do what they want the cartoon would be nearly done by now. What could've easily been a 2023 release could now be 2024 or even 2025
She was letting Nick do what they want, they were the ones who were asking for changes.
She's not letting nick do what they want by arguing over those changes and causing development to be delayed over it.
You clearly don't understand Nickelodeon's current dynamics.
You just don't want to believe Dana's the bad person in this situation because you don't support the network when it's obvious that the development is being held back by her choices while other shows that were announced in the same year her show was announced are already being produced and releasing next year.
The original article said, I quote:
>Simpson said they have a script and a head writer, but now, the studio doesn’t think the show will appeal to boys. So, Simpson wrote a new treatment for the show featuring Max as one of the main characters. “That will have to be good enough because I’m not changing it,” and so far, Nickelodeon seems to be going along with that.
https://www.bainbridgereview.com/life/bi-fans-get-the-point-about-unicorn-series/
Furthermore, I say that because we know Nickelodeon has had similar concerns based on what happened with 'The Casagrandes' and the character of Sid Chang's sister Adelaide.
*enough boys, I mean.
>episodic adventures of a girl and unicorn
I've never read the book but I'm kind of tired of the "normal(or weird) kid with a magical animal friend" It's tiring. But execution is all that matters, so I can't judge
>Nick felt that the show won't attract boys if the mc is all female
>Just premiered Monster High
what's wrong with verity? I favorite show decades ago was SpongeBob but I love watching the entire other shows swell. Sometime I needed a break from all the nautical nonsense and went to go watch a kid with a knack for invention.
>nautical nonsense
Heh.
>Expecting Nickelodeon to greenlight good shows
This is the network that passed on Adventure Time, Ed Edd n Eddy, and Phineas and Ferb. Nickelodeon wouldn't know a good show if it kicked them in the balls.
Sanjay and Craig was great. Fight me, buttholes.
and Craig
>>big goat banana and cricket

I liked these

Would only watch these if nothing else was on
>(the toad cop was cute honestly)
Didn't care for her but I can kind of see why anons would
>tfw that episode that showed her butt hair

Pretty meh and gay
>Sanjay and Craig
That was was pretty good. Not amazing, but fun enough. Best show listed.
>Pig Goat Banana Cricket
I thought that was decent. Every episode I've seen always had at least a few moments that made me laugh.
>Breadwinners
There were some funny moments and a few good side characters. Otherwise, it's not that good of a show.
>Fanboy and Chum Chum
Eh, didn't truly hate it. I can see why others would. I loved the two clerks at the store though.
>Bunsen is a Beast
So bad that it got Hartman to leave Nickelodeon for a few years. Agreed.
>Middlemost Post
Never seen that one. Seems to be a very polarizing show around here so I'm concerned about giving it a shot. Then again, I did like Sanjay and Craig
I'm surprised you didn't mention The Mighty B.
>I'm surprised you didn't mention The Mighty B.
Guilty pleasure honesty. It’s not really that good but I like the style a lot
Middlemost is gonna get a Barnyard-style resurgence. Just fricking wait.
middlepost isn't as memorable, it's just a generic kids show
I really liked the way Pig Goat Banana Cricket's plot was split in 4 different segments, one for each main character and all subplots were connected in some way, any other shows like this?
and Craig
I wanted to frick the snake.
Craig or Ronnie?
Who's Ronnie?
Craig’s brother from the finale episodes of Seasons 1 and 3.
Craig
Monster high seems ok but they mustvemesssed up the schedule
They just make simple kids' shows that aren't ashamed of being kids' shows, nothing wrong with it.
Good kid shows don't make adults feel moronic for watching it.
>CHILDREN'S CARTOONS NEED TO BE SUPER COMPLEX
why are autists so into "deep" and "dark" kids' shows?
What's wrong with exercising our brains?
kid shows that only appeals to kids are always shit. I miss when nick shows appealed to broad audiences
