He didn't know Superman was human. The fact that he had a mother made Batman realize they share humanity, and the fact that their mothers shared a first name intensified that. Its not that deep.

It’s made moronic by the fact that Superman randomly starts calling his mother by her first name for some reason. If he said "save my mother!" the scene would have been the exact same only less moronic.

He was thinking back to 5 minutes ago when Lex said he's going to "kill Martha" like 10 times.

      >He didn't know Superman was human. The fact that he had a mother made Batman realize they share humanity

Batman immediately after than scene murdered like 80 mercenaries who definitely had mothers so why didn’t their humanity stop him?

          >Wow. This reminds me of the time human lives I loved were taken. The time where I dedicated my life in a vow to stop people from ever being killed.
          >Glad I remembered that. Time to go kill some people.

Batman blamed Superman for the deaths in Metropolis, from his perspective Superman is responsible for a hell of a lot more deaths than the random mercenaries

Thomas Wayne's last words were his wife's name, "Martha". When Superman said her name, it made Bruce think of his parents being killed and his no kill rule. It's stupid and badly executed, but it's not devoid of logic.

    >Oh my God Superman. I didn't know you had a human mother. Even as an alien, you share a human connection, like I did.
    >Only...my mother didn't have the chance to be saved by someone trained. My father tried, but failed. So...I became the man who could have saved her.
    >I can save Martha. From criminals. From cruel men, men who kill. Men like...
    >I can save Martha. I won't let her die. I've learned from my mistakes. I know who I must become again.
    >An alien has helped me realize just how valuable human life is.
*immediately kills 20 goons a scene later*

If you use your brain for a minute you can piece together Bruces strong psychological response that brings up his memory of his mother and how he could not save her and the entire reason he became Batman in the first place to stop crime. He relizes in this moment he is no different than the man who murdered his parents. This is also evident when he tell Superman "Martha will not die tonight."

I know thats so crazy and difficult to put together for most people.

they were thinking it was a convenient way to make them bond while conceding that comic books are insular slop, and that fans would onions over it, and they were right
people who think comics are gay think that scene is gay, nothing unusual

There wasn't much thinking going on during the writing of this scene. Snyder had essentially written himself into a corner and had no idea how to get out of it.

Why didn’t he just do a shot for shot remake of the Dark Knight Returns like he did Watchmen if he’s not capable of writing his own story or deviating from the inspiration without massively fricking it up?

Nta, and I don't like to be mean, but this is a topic that deserves it.
Snyder, despite how nice I'm sure he is, is fricking moronic when it comes to making movies.
Even if he did adapt TDKR, word for word, he'd add something in it that would retroactively frick up the entire message of the story.
He had no clue what he wanted when he began the DCEU besides
        >i want buff men to fight
and WB being double moronic didn't help matters either.

How did he even become a director in the first place? And why do studios keep giving him so much money?

It was even worse than that. It was
    >you're killing martha, who is my mother and whom I'm for some reason referring to by her first name

Their whole reason for fighting in the first place was moronic. Very out of character for Superman.
