yes. "losing your son" is not enough punishment IMO
punishment > redemption
is honestly a really selfish sentiment.
>wow something bad happened to you? i'll make it about myself instead
His son dying is not his punishment.
I wanna see pre-teniz death Iroh, I bet he was an ultra bastard. I bet he sent his soldiers to die with a smile while sipping on tea.
I like to think he was sage like, but focused on war. Spreading the glory of the fire nation, and whatever nationalist nonsense fire nation people are taught.
You need to be careful about how bad you make him, though. If he went around raping Earth nation people and sipping his tea, it'd be weird to justify his change of heart.
So he was Dalinar Kholin tier?
When is it stated that Iroh is a war criminal?
Is that even implied?
He never did it though
That's called a "joke", anon.
It's just a prank bro!
No it wasn't, we know it wasn't. It was just writers filling in whatever at the time before they could flesh out a character.
If he actually wanted to do that he would have just burned their crops to the ground since he was already past the first wall and left them to starve. It was obviously a joke.
It could be both it doesn't have to be so 1 dimensional.
Heh
Lmao what??
Where's the war crime though?
You understand that simply fighting in a war is not a war crime right?
RIGHT?
the charges, your honor?
>your honor
Bruh, if you're already in front the judge you know damn well what the charges are. The fact that you didn't listen the first time is probably how you ended up there in first place.
the term war criminal is dumb nonsense only used to justify shitting on the enemy especially after they've been defeated
this. Only the losers are held accountable in war
>war criminal
Nothing in the show indicates he was the type.
>h-he was a general
And? When did they explictly said he went out of his way to murder civilians?
>he dindu nuttin because we didn't see it
>he did horrible things, we just didn't see it
you can only be a war criminal after someone invents that concept.
You don't know what a war criminal or war crimes are do you? It's unlikely he had left behind mass graves of unarmed civilians. The most we know about Iroh's character before turning a new leaf was that he wasn't all devoted to Fire Nation ideals. He was supposed to kill the last living dragons as a rite of passage, but Iroh refused to kill them so he lied to his fellow countrymen.
He does joke about burning the city but it was probably just light hearted fire nation humor.
>goonatar
ah
the contrarian twitter gays trying to make Iroh seem like an irredeemable war criminal
all the while the rest of the world were just as violent with relent
the fire nation just had better use of their abilities for war
big old bites of jelly sandwiches from other tyrants
I don't see why we should ignore Iroh's involvement in the war.
the netflix show acknowledged this but still let him go with a slap on the wrist.
War crimes are based when committed by a superior people.
The war criminal thing is just something Azulatards spam to try and deflect her shitty actions off of her and out of spite for him calling her crazy.
it's mostly because Iroh logically had to do worse things than Azula just by the nature of leading a multi decade war campaign yet people gloss all over it. Azula barely did anything at all except strike down the fire nation's most feared enemy, have the most peaceful takeover in history, and be mean
Iroh conducted the war such that the general on the outer wall felt comfortable with surrendering to him, meaning he was confident it would be honored.
Azula did things so horrible that her own uncle and brother would rather be sentenced to death than handed over to her.
What internationally recognized laws of war are there in that show under which he could be convicted?
Are you the homosexual that unironically called Zuko a fascist in that thread last night?
Even Irohgays have to admit that the General in charge of a theater should be held more accountable than some random grunts.
I mean, he did something more directly accountable than pretty much any general in history accused of war crimes had done - actively switch sides and liberate the city after his own side had occupied it.
Yeah, I'd say liberating a nations under the toe of the nation you fought for serves as redemption. In war, that is the only way to redeem.
Accountable for what, specifically? Not even the earth kingdom grunts who capture him accuse him of more than waging war and being good at it.
He also reclaimed ba sing sei for the earth kingdom, kind of makes up for his conquests
Wasnt he in the council/war room when they were planning to murder every single waterbender on the tribes?
But they didn't do that?
>didnt do that
>while Katara is the last remaining waterbender of her tribe
They went out of their way not to kill them.
>tries to kill the avatar and sides with his sexy sister
how can he get redeemed after that? he double down his path
He doesn't need redemption because the Fire Nation did nothing wrong.
He also returned to Ba Sing Se as its liberator, so it all balances out.
>but he got the city back
it's such a kid show mentality. I'm reminded of Entrapta & Hordak getting banished to beast island for their involvement in the war, they're probably happy there but they're not allowed to leave.
The Earth kingdom didn't acuse him of anything beyond trying and not managing to break the wall. So yeah it does make up for it kek
Then why not submit to their system of justice? Why victim gets a say but no not in this case, he's too special and has to be redeemed on his own terms.
>it's such a kid show mentality.
You don't say.
He's also a rapist.
almost
As he should be.
BASED
Oh yeah? How often does he go to mass?
>"I believe in second chances"
why not let the earth kingdom decide if you're worthy of a second chance?
They kinda did. Saving their asses seemed to help though
Ba Sing Se is letting him live there openly so they did.
he literally points out the irony in him finally conquering ba sing se, but by liberating it from the fire nation for the earth kingdom
I know this is probably bait but there is an annoying amount of people who assume any leader during wartime counts as a war criminal. Did he torture war prisoners? Murder or enslave civilians? All we ever see him do is siege a city, fail and leave. Everything else is just projection and fanfiction. If anything Zuko is more likely to be classed as a war criminal as I definitely remember him going around attempting to burn down that village in season 1 which would probably count as wanton destruction.
accountability only works in favor of coinbenders
>So glad society has moved towards accountability.
It hasn't.
>he's just a guy in a chair he's not responsible of the things he told his soldiers to do
it seems like at least twice a week, we get the exact same thread about how iroh is actually evil
maybe get out more?
He's not a war criminal because the fire nation won the war.
War crimes = fun times.
There was an entire episode about how there is no future if everyone pursues merciless retribution for past ills. No one liked it, but it did happen.
>That's why proportionate response is stupid and you should always escalate to genocide. No one left to pursue retribution if they're all dead.
>Fire Lord Sozin
it feels like, historically speaking, a prominent figure switching sides and not facing much in the way of consequences after said side wins isn't much of a stretch. i am struggling to imagine specific examples of a major general turning coat specifically, but nobles and notables jumping ship and being excused/paid off for it is common in war. sure, you get punishments, but the prudent understand that letting bygones be bygones helps prevent further instability.
