These elaborate tortures are grisly and impressive to onlookers or as a way of intimidating people, but the ones I find truly horrifying are all those cases of old timey prisons stuffing people into tiny cells with no ventilation until most of them suffocated. A particularly brutal example is India's infamous black hole of Calcutta, a 14 by 18 foot room into which Sepoy mutineers forced at least 60 people, 18 of whom survived. There were countless similar incidents back then, when no one gave a shit about prisoners' wellbeing.
Also, people who were worked to death doing agonising hard labour until their bodies gave out and they were callously left to die, as in Soviet penal camps and the building of Ancient monuments. It's such a pointless and miserable way to lose your life.
