confirmation keys exist to prove an order's authenticity, the one that didn't make it altogether didn't even provide the key because of the disruption. we're dealing with the threat of nuclear armaggedon, so disregarding a potentially perfectly valid order that would avoid total human death because some boomer is a trigger-happy maniac with nothing to lose would mean that even if he was right on merely formal grounds (he still wasn't since XO judgement overrules), he'd still be wrong

It could absolutely happen. Rules are so comprehensive because people break down quickly under stress. More accurate writing might've had the Russians jamming or even wiping out communications with EMP so it really seems like a nuclear war has begun. Then Hunter would seem like a real libtard and hackman would have reason to really get emotional.
He's the antagonist but he's not a bad person. The whole point of the movie is that neither of them knew for sure if they were doing the right thing, they both wanted to save lives.
The external story is bad because it's a movie and in a movie you can have a nuclear war because it's a movie.
