TD S4

I liked a few elements, the ghosts, the reminder that death is not the end was great, it was interesting to watch overall. The paranormal stuff may have mislead some people (myself included) that there was some creature under the ice that killed the scientists so it may have been a bit of a letdown that the killers were just an angry mob. In retrospect it makes perfect sense they would take the law into their own hands because of the rampant disease and their newborns dying. It is however an inversion of S1 where the spiritual revelation arose in the last episode, maybe even the second half when Rust was in the hospital and when he was talking to Marty about his NDE and how he connected briefly to a 'field of love' and sensed his dad and daughter somewhere out there. Whereas in S4 it was sprinkled throughout with different characters seeing dead people. It may appear different but at its core S4 was not that far off S1. Danvers and Navarro were pessimistic and nihilistic the same way as Rust, and they all lost people; but they found out that death is not the end. We can't have the same exact story as S1, so they did a similar story but different. Every subsequent season of TD is overshadowed by S1, but we'll always have Rust and Marty.

No. If you ask me they should've left it open ended and leaned even more into the paranormal. I didn't like the ending, it was kinda anti-climactic but it was an OK show overall.

The fact that people as stupid as you exist genuinely hurts my brain. You think that HBO is paying an employee to sit on Cinemaphile at 5 o'clock in the goddamn morning to say nice things about a show that never stood a chance here to begin with because of the multi--ethnic female leads. Why? For what conceivable purpose? What would such a thing achieve? What, are they going to break your Nazism with this post? Are they going to cure you of being a 45 year old incel and get you to march at the next pride parade because they said a tepidly nice thing about a tv show you hate? Fricking tell why, you braindead marmoset

So this is what, an intern or something?

it has already been revealed that marketing departments do damage control on social media regarding negative backlash towards movies.

Doing it on twitter makes sense. Doing it on reddit makes sense. Doing it on Cinemaphile at this hour makes no sense at all. None whatsoever.

OP here, I already agreed with a few serious criticisms above, I just wanted to at least say something positive in the beginning, because I honestly wasn't fuming at the mouth while watching it, like I said I didn't like the ending it felt a little bit like a wet fart, but it was OK ovreall. Good acting, good cinematography, story was a bit meh compared to the previous seasons, to be expected. But if I'm not raging at the show I must be a shill. Whatever man I don't give a frick, you guys are gonna pop a vessel.

True, but at least it wasn't "girls get it done" in an obnoxious way, where the men were all morons and the girls were all supercop geniuses. It felt organic and not preachy. If the film is good like Prey and not like Charlie's Angels with Kstew I don't mind. Shows as big as this one have to up their game every season, and that includes heightening the conspiracy aspect... but it's getting too real now. It was already too real in SCENE ONE EPISODE ONE SEASON ONE with the RITUAL MURDER. 10 years later, season 4 comes out, almost zero conspiracy in comparison. Why? Why was the conspiracy element so far removed that it was literally in another country?

I think we were watching different shows. The men were all morons. The season finale had a bunch of clean up ladies turn into FBI operatives solving a murder and then executing a group of men.

They solved the case because they knew who did it? Unless you're saying something else, because I forgot the plot already, it must've gone over my head. As for the execution, it was 5 unarmed nerds vs 30 armed moms, they were outmanned (no pun intended) and outgunned, not really a gender issue. It doesn't matter who you are there's no escaping that situation.

I do not doubt that. The problem is the idea that they're doing it on this site, at this hour. Do they also have a kiwi farms and stormfront division? 420 chan? Are they on deepweb bestiality forums? Cinemaphile is a lost cause. It would be like going to North Korea and trying to get them to vote for Mitt Romney in their next election. It's the wrong audience and it doesn't even make sense. If they want to spin it as a bunch of incel virgins review bombing everything, it is in their best interest to let Cinemaphile do it's Cinemaphile thing while trying to sway people who might actually be receptive to their messaging. Making Cinemaphile change its mind is the opposite of what they should be doing. If there are no incels hating it, then who are they going to blame for their own mediocrity?

Not him but you're operating on the premise these people are competent.

                >These people also wrote a show that the average autist here could have done a better job at.
This is just not true. While the show is trash, it was not anything bordering incompetent. I feel like the people who say this kind of thing have never studied anything arts related. People call big time actors incompetent when what they really mean is boring.

People call Michael Cera an "incompetent" actor. He isn't. Yeah, he has no range and he's definitely towards the bottom of the barrel in terms of recognizable actors, but there's a thousand worlds of distance between Michael Cera and some butthole auditioning for summerstock at your local community college.

I wen to a film/drama conservatory. I've read scripts that are incompetent. This one is very bad, but it's a professionally written turd.

Weird tangent because I never mentioned actors.
But if these people greenlit such a bad script as you say and brought it all the way to a complete product without anyone pointing out or fixing the obvious flaws, that alone makes them incompetent. You're trying to argue semantics but you're wrong even on the fundamental level.

                >Weird tangent because I never mentioned actors.
I know, it's just a bit easier to illustrate the point with actors than it is with scripts, which is a bit more intangible. Same concept though.
                >But if these people greenlit such a bad script as you say and brought it all the way to a complete product without anyone pointing out or fixing the obvious flaws, that alone makes them incompetent
Nope. The Room was incompetent. This was just shitty. There are a million things that can go wrong throughout the filming process that can make or break the final product. This was lame and I disliked it, but it was not remotely unprofessional. It wasn't even bad-bad in terms of tv shows. It was much better than the shit HBO dumps onto streaming. Go watch Gotham Knights and compare it to this. Apples and oranges, and I wouldn't even call that show incompetent

Incompetent is not the same thing as unprofessional.

lol, ok. Acknowledging that we're talking about competency and not professionalism, what is the actual quality that differentiates a Neil Breen screenplay from True Detective? What would be required to put those things on a more level playing field?

                Level playing field?
I said what I had to say in the plainest terms.
If telling a good story is your goal and you fail for script related reasons (among others), then it's the failure in competency somewhere in the chain of writers, script doctors, producers etc.
Something else being worse or better doesn't change that.

                >If telling a good story is your goal and you fail for script related reasons
You don't seem to understand the difference between a story that you dislike and a story that is incompetently told. Again, while I don't personally care for this story, it is lightyears away from incompetent. There are tons of movies and shows written by competent people that I dislike. I don't care for Inception, but that doesn't make it an incompetent movie.

what is the thesis statement of this show. what is the philosophical statement about life that it is saying.

Also, the shows are all conspiracy core in its subtext. season 1 and 3 are about pizzagate, and season 2 are about cities that are run by the mafia, the police, and private military companies all working to gether, with secret sex parties and sex cults thrown in.

what the frick does this one have to do with conspiracies that are real in real life? what is it saying about life? death is not the end? corporate corruption is bad? corporations don't care about the climate? what is it saying?

it was shit. nothing related to pizzagate or other conspiracies, nothing substantial enough relating to magical realism or occultism, no philosophical statement about life.

I guess you're right it was thin on conspiracy. It had some environmental messaging and corrupt corporations but it never got occult. There is only one line that paid lip service to that, that Tuttle Industries were funding the research centre and they were looking into anti-aging, cancer cures and life-extension, which is something the pizza elites are into. However there was no confrontation and car battery torture on a yacht, like I say, pretty thin on that front. Navarro just met the CEO? lady who told her to stop the investigation, but she wasn't high in the pyramid.

      https://www.businessinsider.com/jeffrey-epstein-dna-genetics-research-drug-companies-2019-8

There was another associate of his, looked like a ghoul and named like a ghoul, yes Nygard was his name, who was inviting African American supermodels to his island for similar research purposes, genetic research life extension, etc. Now that I think about it, it's crazy we have HBO shows about these real conspiracies. Maybe the writers wanted to lean into the conspiracies more but the studios said
      >That's crazy haha people aren't interested in these nonsensical stories here's your paycheck thank you for doing business with us

We'll never know what happens in the writers rooms but it's not unlikely something like the above conversation to have taken place.

most important question is "what is the theme statement"

like for the jim carrey movie "liar liar" the theme statement "not only could jim be a better lawyer if he didn't lie, he could be a better father and person if he didn't lie"

what is the philosophical argument that this show is making?

          I don't know man

It's superficially similar to season 1 but it lacks any sort of authenticity or conviction the first season had. It felt like a cheap facsimile of someone who didn't know what they were talking about giving you a lecture on life.

The characters were cartoon characters and their motivations not even remotely fleshed out. That or they were not convincingly portrayed. I felt nothing when Navarro randomly walked out into the tundra because it was so random. She went from being normal to hearing voices to being suicidal in the span of two or three episodes.

It would have had more emotional weight if more context about her early life was shown visually but there was too little shown for me at least to form an emotional bond with her. And it was not for lack of runtime or screentime either, there was just too much time wasted.
And she was one of the better characters even.
          Rest of my thoughts here.

Anyways just go rewatch Contact (1997) instead. It has Danvers, Rust Cohle, and Bezzerides' dad in it.

I read your posts, well put. I can't disagree with you there, especially when the show is only 6 eposides long, of course that's not enough time.

            >6 eposides long, of course that's not enough time.
It wasn't even that, some other anon mentioned how every episode they retread the same ground over and over. Like Navarro's sister has trouble and she has to go help her, Danvers meets with someone she fricked or the wife of someone she fricked and is chastised, Danvers has family drama with daughter, etc. There was so much time wasted or inefficiently used.
Meanwhile season 1's story literally spans several decades yet manages to build a consistent portrait of the characters.

the story wasn't dense in season 4. they spend so much time developing absolutely nothing. there's more story in episode 1 of season 1 than there is in probably the first 3-4 episodes of this shit. it's not even a matter of retreading because they were retreading ground they never should have even tread to begin with.
see in season 1 the character development has serious ramifications. the way marry acts gives him a divorce and it fricks the relationship between him and rust, so when we see his family life it means something. but when I see danvers fricking Dr. Who there's absolutely nothing that comes of it. and the same can be said of so many of the scenes. they just wanted scenes that were "powerful", not scenes that mattered in the story

Now that you mention it it's crazy True Detective season 1 was even greenlit in the first place for bringing attention to such real life elite pedo rings... and 5 years before Epstein was suicided no less.

I wonder if that wasn't the reason producers were so quick to shit out season 2, 3, and 4 or more conventional garbage because season 1 hit the elites too close to home.

season three literally brings up the franklin sex scandal by name.

i think the idea that there actually was no child sex ring in season 3 was a red herring and there actually was. the main charector has dementia, and the culprit literally just tells him "nah there was no sex ring a rich person just wanted to raise a child that reminded them of a child they lost" and then the main charectors son asks him if he thinks the case is solved and he's like "no". the subtext makes it pretty clear that actually there is a deeper story but he just took too long to get to the bottom of it and the case went cold.

I can see your points even if I sorta liked Season 3, I felt the duo was quite likeable, and their separation and reunion was handled as good as the first season, while in this one it was like
      >we are not going to join your team
      >I am putting together a team
      >You son of a b***h I am in

Maybe is nitpicking, I just did not believe in their relation, anyway you should try finishing it, I think the major flaws in S3 were

      1) They only handled 1 case overall and is like they never did any real work with real results, just sort of circled around it for years
      2) The ending deflates the climax with exposition (ayy much like this one what do you know)
      3) They used S1 hooks as bait, even named and showed pictures of the duo, and maybe telling you this might make the reveal sting less.

I think the main motif is going to be about the natives, critics might even try to shape a narrative where you can't get it because you are not them.

The horror elements weren't done too well either.
Just spooky screaming ghost in the corner.
They should have tried being a lot more subtle with it, scenes with an unnerving atmosphere but nothing ever shows up etc.
Or they could have gone the cosmic horror route and just shown the inky blank sea in the darkness.

Anyways everyone should play Until Dawn™ (coming soon to Steam), which unironically has a better story, or Polaris which is set in a research station.

I think True Detective s4 has a comfier setting than those games (Tsalal and the ice caves mainly) but the games have a better payoff because they don't get their plots sidetracked by drama.

I get this really weird vibe from this show like the story was changed half way through somehow. Which doesn't make sense because the whole story was written beforehand.
The mystery is the biggest thing here. I will admit it had me hooked in the first two episodes. What COULD have scared them enough to take their clothes off and go wild clawing at themselves in the snow? Why were the clothes folded? It had some great potential and I was interested to see how it played out. And I have to say this has to be the least interesting possible way to answer the mystery
    >what would scare them enough to make them go onto the ice?
    A gun
    >why were the clothes folded
    Cleaning ladies???
    >why were they self inflicting injuries and bleeding from the ears?
    It just happens bro

Like holy shit man. Why build up the mystery as if there's an interesting answer to it, when the answer is just "someone with a gun put them out there?" I thought the folded clothes was going to be some MO from a serial killer perhaps. Maybe he's crazy, ritualistic, and they were sacrifices. Who knows, anything but this.

      Anonymous

      >bleeding from the ears?
the lound music the cleaning ladies were playing during the raid? doesnt look possible
navarro had the same thing when she was staring at the Christmas tree, so i guess that its the great spirit
      >and they were sacrifices
they kinda of were, the ladies were saying that they left them in the ice so that the great spirit would decide what to do with them

      Anonymous

I mean the solution being grounded and logical is good. Anything else would have been an asspull. It's the way they bait the solution and reveal it in an unsatisfying way I have a problem with.
This is like a worse version of Murder on the Orient Express.

Also it's a bait and switch, because they bait you with a supernatural mystery only for most of the show being about family drama that has nothing really to do with the plot.

But yea next time someone complains about Tunbaq and the monster element of The Terror s1 I'll just point them to TD s4 as a counterpoint.

      Anonymous

      >What COULD have scared them enough to take their clothes off and go wild clawing at themselves in the snow? Why were the clothes folded?
Two great questions. Neither are answered. Why did the cleaning ladies fold the clothes? Can they just not help it? They just see a pile of laundry and the have a deep instinctive need to fold it? They weren't too shook up when the cops got to them, but I gotta imagine they weren't literally planning on getting caught by two lady cops who happen to be sympathetic to their cause for veganal reasons.

If they truly didn't care they could have just shot them in the facility and went home. Why the frick would they decide to fold the clothes? It makes no sense. And what is the point of asking why their eyes were torn up and their ear drums busted if you're just going to say "well, that happens sometimes when people freeze to death". Obviously homicide detectives in the goddamn Alaskan tundra are going to know what frozen bodies look like. Even the most podunk towns have police academies. Yeah, it's possible that might happen in real life, but this is not real life. You don't just put shit in a script for no reason and expect it to not piss people off.

        Anonymous

i think the implication was meant to be if they found their way back to the clothes (the heckin spirit decided they could live) then they can get dressed again without a big old fuss over who's clothes are who's!

      Anonymous

There is an interview where the guy who plays Pryor's dad in a very professional way says that the actors had to "fix" a scene from the script. It makes me think a lot did change, but not for the worse.

Nah, everything is a fricking mess after s1.

Just because this one is shane black's The Predator-tier garbage, doesn't make the rest not suck ass. The only credit I give 2 and 3 is that they at least tried.

2 and 3 are decent stories even if you end up e-girlng at the awful Hispanic shootout choreography in 2 or Uncle Ruckus explaining 90% of the mystery in 3.

    >Alan Sepinwall of Rolling Stone wrote, "There will almost certainly be another story, whether López tells it, or Pizzolatto returns, or someone new ends up in charge. Whoever it is, and whenever it comes, a new standard has been set for how strongly a True Detective case can be closed."[8] Ben Travers of IndieWire gave the episode a "B+" grade and wrote, "After five years off the air and with a new creative team in place, True Detective Season 4 set out to continue the franchise while reimagining what it could be. That's a lot to take on, but like the finale itself, Night Country pulled it off. Bring on Season 5."

They can recon, plan an op, hide in plain sight, execute 8 VIPs in a remote station and then make it look like an accident, leaving no trace despite driving around in trucks in a small town where everyone knows everyone else.

TD S1 wasn't 10/10 television. It was no one's favorite show.
It has only risen to prominence because the subsequent seasons (and pretty much 100% of other TV shows of the same genre) have failed to top it, which doesn't speak to how genius it is, but how low the bar has been set.

Goes without saying that Night Country reviews are flowery for virtue-signalling reasons.

But ultimately, I pity you people who give a single frick about some made up number on a shitty aggregator website.

  51. 3 months ago
    Anonymous

The cleaning ladies being the murderers isn't a problem.
Logically it's pretty genius since there's a reaosn for their dna to be all over the place AND they can clean shit up.
The problems with the script were other things, mainly how the mystery was investigated and solved, if at all.

      Anonymous

yeah honestly if it was handled better I wouldn't have a problem with them being the murderers. It just was so sloppy and poorly presented, cutting from looking at a hand print to talking with them was a massively jarring leap in logic. At first I was looking to see if the ginger lady was missing a finger or something that would make it easy to identify her prints visually but no?

Not to mention how stupid the manhole in the lab is both spatially and logically. Even being charitable and saying "the great spirit actually killed them" to explain the state of the bodies there would be a lot of physical evidence of a dozen people with guns storming the facility and driving a giant truck out. Also a shell casing from when the one shot in the air.

Basically I'm just mad we didn't get more spoopy kino in the ice caves, it lasted all of two minutes before they travelled several miles to be directly under the research facility. I was so excited for cool frozen whale bones and ancient native totems but all we got was a two second shot of a magical liopleurodon

this hole point is about the sins of the father, they are kinda saying that not all white males are bad, but they have to cut all ties with their parents(the ones who built the (racist) society). his father always was saying the thing about how the important thing is blood(familiar/tribal/national ties), but him killing his father shows that it doesnt need to be this way
so basicly they are trying to say white people, "hey stop looking for your best self interest as a group, we wont kill you if you surrender"

The show is women female power fantasy. None of the male characters are portrayed in any way to be the equals of or superior to any female characters. The scientists were willing to ruin the environment so it was easier to dig in the ice, then murder the woman to keep the secret which all of them joined in, then complete cowards when faced with the natives with guns. The guy at the plant got his ass kicked by the blonde lady AND Navarro. Jodie fosters ex husband was abusive to their son, wanted a mail order bride to display his low sexual market value and was paid off to cover up a murder. Dr Who himself was completely under the sway of Jodie Fosters vegana, and knew she was involved with the cover up of a murder but didn’t say anything until she got too close to solving the murder and then he used the info to threaten / blackmail her. Leon Kennedy spends the entire series getting ordered around by Jodie Foster who is his mom and crapped on by his baby momma. Then he murders his dad because the writers needed a way unfrick the situation they just wrote. Navarros boyfriend is her sexual and emotional tampon, and is never once repaid in kind for his unwavering and unwarranted support of Navarro. Even the red herring evil corporate mine worker is a woman and not a man because representation matters or something. And to top it all off, Rust Cohes fricking mother helps dispose of two dead bodies because her and Navarro smoked weed once. This is the biggest piece of man hating feminazi propaganda I have ever seen.

All they had to do was leak the proofs they found on the internet. Or to the press. Both methods would have prevented a shutting of the case by the mine or Dr Who.

If I was an Inuit I would be so angry right now. Suicide is a big problem in native communities. Making it look like a good thing, a DESIRABLE thing, is just fricking wrong. And it shows Lopez has no idea of what native life is like at all.

But the mine didn't know that and was manipulated into polluting more and the scientists faked the data so they genuinely think they aren't responsible. They would not know to stop because they have "proof" that the pollution isn't the cause of Ennis problems.
Of course, that being said, why did they help when Annie K was killed? And what did the scientists told them was the cause for them killing her?

So let me get this straight:
    - Mine pollutes the water because scientists want to dig a life changing microorganism, and the only way to thaw the ice is through dumping pollutants. So the multibillion company that finances the scientists runs the mine operation so it could pollute the environment to thaw the ice. Seemingly none of the scientist heard about the heat
    - Local brave trailer BLM activist was the true detective and discovered the paper trail for this evil enterprise, and decided to run into a secure facility and destroy the evidence, getting killed
    - Scientists were careless so they hid the secret entrance below a tile in the floor instead behind the secure lock (like they had on freezers). This enabled the cleaning ladies to get the whiff of it
    - Cleaning ladies took up guns and put the scientists in the truck, drove them in the middle of nowhere and stripped them naked, told them to walk away and carefully folded their clothes
    - Scientists at some distance away reacted by hurdling together, screaming and tearing their eyes out, then they melted into the ice and died, except for one guy who survived several days in the frost, only to reawake when his hand was broken off by a negligent cop
    - This was all revealed by two female true detectives that killed two of their suspects, so they understood the need for the revenge and they let the cleaning ladies go

You forgot that Danvers was able to open the panel to shut off the song she hates, but then couldn't find this hidden floor panel OR the fricking exposed button on the wall next to it.

that reminds me, why the frick was ferris bueller stuck on a loop in that part of the song both at the beginning and on the finale?

Same reason as the one-eye motif and the rolling orange: it's just a motif, don't think about it.

Why was the hatch a secret when it was publicly known that the station was there to drill for microbe samples?

What, so they could conveniently investigate it on episode one and solve the case right then? You crazy

    https://slate.com/culture/2024/02/true-detective-season-4-night-country-finale-review.html
    >Season 1 teased supernatural horror fans before ultimately revealing that the otherworldly elements were merely trappings. Brilliant as the initial arc was, it pulled some punches during the latter stages, seeming to lack the courage of its convictions; an existential nightmare undercut with the unmasking of a Scooby-Doo villain and a dose of unearned optimism. By contrast, Night Country grows stronger, weirder, with each episode. The twisting narrative and stellar acting performances build to a crescendo, fulfilling an initial audacious promise that there is more beneath heaven than dreamt of in our philosophy. Not only is the world stranger than we imagine, we passengers on this odyssey will simply have to live with that revelation.
I mean, he's not wrong about that first part

This unironically reads like someone who got mad at season 1 for being about a pedo ring.

This finale is managing to be more awful than I expected (and yes, I read the review that said there would be an embarrassing callback line).

Sooooooo, they got rid of the body but left the murder weapon sitting there for a couple of years?

they needed the drill to continue witn their research
and they were assuming that they wouldnt need a lock mechanism in the hatch because they believed that it wouldnt be found, stupid i know, but it isnt the biggest plot hole here, so it doesnt bother me that much

It's not though. There no actual real native lore in the show except some tats and the fact birthhouses exist. Issa didn't even bother to google the people she pretends to talk for.

you want me to believe a middle-class hollywood content creator wouldn't bother to do actual research and merely pay lip service to the themes she says are important to her show?

Wait a minute, wouldn't the dozen women storming Tsalal have left hundreds of footprints? If the cleaning ladies cleaned afterwards, then they did a shit job because they left finger prints which is how they were caught.

    Truer Detectives (TDs5)
Marty and Rust decide to go out on one last case. They show up to the ice caves in Alaska and fight the cleaning ladies one at a time, like in Kill Bill. There is a final battle where Marty dies to the rifle wielding 70 year old Native acrobat, but not before tricking her, quite cleverly, into stripping down nude and sealing her fate as well. Rust is left alone to fight the She of the Night Country. An epic psychic battle of flat circles and frostbite ensues. Just when you think Rust's flat circles have run out and that She has won, Rust's dad makes another appearance.
The ghost saunters in with a giant joint hanging from his lips saying "alright, alright, alright." An ancient Native People's saying that is older than time itself. She is immediately disarmed and goes to embrace her former lover - forgiving him for cheating on her with Rust's mom all those years ago.
It is said that those who wander in to Night Country today no longer succumb to the cold, but often return days later smelling faintly of marijuana and Dolce & Gabanna The One.
