Make a compelling story with a character set in in 1960s southern US with a black man, but don't shy away from calling him a Black person, I'd watch that shit and probably even root for him.

That's why you'll find that Americans of predominantly European or Asian descent tend to pick one or two European or Asian countries they feel strongly connected to, even without actually knowing anything about those countries or their respective cultural background. It is, nonetheless, a believable stance to claim Italian or German or Chinese or Japanese heritage, for all those countries have a rich cultural history.
South Americans and Mexicans who come to the US likewise feel a close connection to their ancestral homes, but unlike Eurasians (maybe diue to closer proximity) they keep more of their culture alive in their family traditions.
And Native Americans will cling to the remnants of their own cultures, understandably, and protect and defend them. They are, afterall, the heirs of a culture the land that is now occupied by America once had.
That brings us to the big problem: African Americans. To be exact: Black (Central/East) African Americans. Their "original culture" is one of slavery, and not much else. One they themselves feel victimized by and that they vocally oppose, that their ancestors were victims of. They rightly do not want to adopt that culture of their (African) oppressors. But that leaves them with nothing at all. That's why they are so desperate to make shit up, or coopt European culture or history as their own. Or to coopt Egypt. Or, and this might be the worst thing they could do, to take pride in ghetto subculture (which is more a form of anti-culture than anything).
And all of that just because the American education system is so insistently drilling their population to feel unearned pride.
