Like I keep saying they launched a shared universe franchise right as it was becoming clear they don't last and frick up your IP forever by making the navigation of your back catalogue require a master's degree in watching 800hrs of goyslop. Stand alone shits are the way to go with maybe the occasional tie-in streaming/anime show. The strength of the Godzilla franchise is how free the creators have been to operate outside of overarching lore over the years.

I like campy monster movies as much as anyone but I also love sovlful monster movies about the human condition. This is why the Godzilla franchise is such a cultural phenomenon. It's got something for everyone.
I like both too but they've done this plot 4 times albeit slightly different now. Not sure why I should praise the movie when I saw a superior version several years ago. This should have been a Kaiju battle movie.
