Funny, I just came here to make a thread about the Madagascar movies. I just binged all three movies for the first time and I have some thoughts about them.

I thought the first movie was of middling quality. It got some laughs out of me but I thought the animation wasn't that great, story was super basic, and I thought musically it was quite mediocre, featuring mostly awkward Karaoke moments and no real memorable new songs or use of existing songs outside of a few gags. The one song people always remember in the movie is "I like to move it" which at least sticks.

Madagascar 2 actually feels like it has a real story to tell. Once again it's a bit basic, but there's enough going on to make me feel more interested. Overall it was a lot better written and the animation was much better quality than the first movie.

The third movie felt the most different and I suppose you could chock that up to it coming out 8 years after the first one, and also because Dreamworks Animation was reaching maturity as a studio. In some ways I actually liked the third movie the best out of the bunch. It was kind of all over the place but the central story worked and the new characters had good chemistry with the original cast. The thing that really took me by surprise was how much more elaborate the action and setpieces were, and how much they were featured in the movie. The way it used music also felt like a major step up because they used it to really spruce up the emotional highs and lows, which is what I'm looking for.

So yeah, I'm glad I gave these movies a chance even though I skipped them when they were still new. I just threw them on because I wanted some noise while I was working, but I felt like they got better with each one and I was actually into it after a while. They're not amazing but they were solidly entertaining and worth watching.

too bad those "maturity" years spawned kung fu Panda 2, one of the worst and most tonally confused animated films i've ever seen from a major studio

i think Kung Fu Panda 2 is awful. The story is banal, characters are annoying, dialogue is lame, action scenes are repetitive and confusingly edited, and the humor is painfully unfunny

because it ain't a good story. It's flimsy, basic and unoriginal

oh yeah, the main characters are annoying. Po is too "Po" this time, and it isn't charming like in 1 because he isn't starting out or trying to earn Shifu and the 5's respect. He is now the Dragon Warrior yet behaves more inmaturately than before. As for the peawiener, he is just an edgelord. His dialogue amounts to "China will be mine", talking about that prophecy, talking about killing, or bossing around his men. Everyone else barely registers

by that point, i'm not gonna praise Dreamworks for their animation quality. They had like 3 facilites, Hewlett Packard workstations, hundreds of technicians, and millions of dollars. It was expected of their films look good. I want quality writing, not just quality animation

Movie, Penguins and AHK Juliens are all entirely different characters. Trying to put them in the same timeline is a mistake.

Eh, at least AHKJ was building from the movies and even made some minor background characters into recurring characters.

I hope one day you will realize no one is convinced by you copying the written dialogue of a movie when the humor is also based on timing, context and tone.

when you're working on so many projects at the same time, quality drops are unavoidable. Dreamworks accidentally made one of the worst mainstream CG films ever with Panda 2 as a result
