it still has some important characterization mixed in too, it shows shinji being judgemental rather than just withdrawn and has him come to actually respect misato and start to sorta understand something about her when she shows that she can be professional and heroic too. plus its the first hint that nerv is involved in outright shady business

The first half of the series is really fricking lame. I quit several times through: the characters were annoying, and most of the plot was boring as frick (oh wow it's another monster attack rise repeat, oh wow Shinji is being a little b***h again rinse and repeat). It's only past half-way through that it starts to pick up and get more interesting beyond the initial premise.

It's why the earlier rebuild movies are better, they streamlined so much of the samey grind from the first half of the series.

You're correct but when you watch anime at the right age childhood to teenage years it's perfect for you. Generally anime sucks but some of them explore different themes and aesthetics that you would never see in the West. Cartoons in the West are either for children or gross adult cartoons like Family. Anime provides interesting plots(for an anime), beautiful visuals, and thrilling action. It felt good to be a weeb from like 11 to 15 and it felt even better to move on from it as a better person overall.

I legit finished the 95 series today for the first time and Let me tell you anon, I’m a pretty big fan. So I was just gonna watch everything by year of release (that tends to be how I approach anime) what are you opinions on the amazon one and anything I shouldn’t skip- or could miss- and what’s your take on what the show means?

              Anonymous

Rebuilds 1 and 2 are awesom, then on the third I've lost all interest. Not even the slightest urge to watch 4 now.

                Anonymous

Shit taste. First rebuild is pointless. From then they get better as they go. 3 is the Alien 3 of the franchise.

Last one is unironically perfect IDST

                Anonymous

I agree that a near one-for-one remake of the series is pointless, but you cannot watch 3.33 and 3.0+1.0 and say they're perfect with a straight face. I barely respect the third rebuild for the unique direction it took, but any investment I had in the movies was deflated by the shitty fanservice, nightmarish CG, and kitschy action. The fourth one is god damn incoherent after the village half.

                Anonymous

4 is WAY better than 3. 3 is basically a complete waste of time where barely anything happens.

              Anonymous

The rebuilds are fricking moronic but 1 and 2 are a nice revisit of the series if you want to see the show redone with a modern flair of incredibly inferior cgi, colors, shots, etc.

              Anonymous

Rebuild is pretty ass. The first two movies are retreads of the first 16 episodes or so of the original, just with all the character introspection that makes eva interesting cut out. The last two try to make up for lost time while also adding poorly conceived new concepts, and the result are two of the worst movies I've ever seen.
If you really want more eva I'd say read the official manga. Its not as good as the original, but it has some nice art and some of the alternative takes on the main characters are interesting.

                Anonymous

I really disliked the third one when i first watched it but when i watched it again for 3.0+1.0 i didnt mind it, and i enjoyed the last one well enough.

                Anonymous

I'm honestly most partial to 3.0 out of all the rebuilds, mostly because it feels the most unique out of them, but I have to say that it barely functions as a movie. Its at most a 20 minute plotline that gets stretched out somehow to be one hour and thirty minutes, and the characters all act like they have severe brain damage. Also I hate that it reduced Kaworu to walking fujo bait whose entire existence revolves around Shinji's happiness.
Now 4.0 I'll admit I'm pretty sour on because of the rave reviews I see for it, but I think it fails on its own by trying to say something on eva as a whole but offering nothing of substance. And the callbacks to the original were just pathetic, bringing back giant naked rei was a blatant act of desperation because the crew couldn't come up with anything a tenth as evocative as the imagery from the original. Also somehow the cgi in 4.0 looks worse than it did in 1.0 which is absolutely insane when you see the kind of money that gets pumped into these movies.

Yeah I kind of agree, I liked the second movie best because it actually showed Shinji and Asuka being teenagers like when they go to that aquarium and the cooking stuff, but I suppose it wasn't very original. 3.0 tried to do something new, it just totally fricked it, and 3.0+1.0 is basically unredeemable trash.

I don't know if I liked 3+1 but it gave me what I needed. I first saw Eva on fansubbed VHS tapes, I just needed it out of my head and the mad bastard not only realised this but did it. In and of itself it is very flawed but as a kind of auteur thing I think its pretty interesting.

It is the end of the narrative story. 3+1 is more about dismantling a self-contradictory pop culture phenomenon. Its not about ending the story, its about ending the thing.

It isn't butchering anything, the other stuff is still there if you want, it even goes to the trouble of pointing this out. Its ending a recurring cycle at his third attempt.

Haha, wtf is that trash ReBoot-tier animation?

Its the normal SAC 2002 opening.

Wasn't impressed by the series really but EoE is pure unfiltered kino. It also helps if you are a bit on the depressed/existential crisis end of things some of the themes make more sense because that was the mindset of the creator while he was making it.

I don't think its his mindset, its more what he learned in therapy. Wrongly thought to be Freudian but its really very straight textbook Albert Adler. Look at typology here, those are your four main characters. He was also very into birth order which is used a motif obviously.
                https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alfred_Adler
Adler is popular in Japan in a way he isn't in the West, "The courage to be disliked" is Adlerian for example.

Nah, man, no need to force it. If you lasted 200, you gave your due diligence; it just isn't for you. I watched Neon Genesis Evangelionin its entirety and thought it was just whiny teenage angst bullshit (granted, I'm near 50). I've watched quite a few other series in their entierety; some resonated, and some just left me annoyed for the time I'll never get back.

The reason why modern anime is an unsalvagable piece of shit is not only budget, it's the entire generation behind it. Up till the 80s there were a ton of experienced people behind art & writing, these Japs had actual lifes, maybe even fought in WW2, basically what I'm trying to say they weren't fricked up Otakus, or at least weirdos with life experience outside of internet. Japan completely fricked itself however. It's an inhuman society of working yourself to death and they refuse to adapt, so they generate a shitton of Otakus that refuse to get out, and what's left of those guys that tought themselves how to draw, end up making all that moeshit for easy money. There's absolutely zero hope of things returning to the quality standards of the 80s, that society is completely fricked.

I didn't look up anything about the movie before watching, just that it was Park directing. The way the movie is structured makes some scenes get me really bad.

I used to have the DVD box set waaaay back in the day, I think around 2000 - 2002, but I don't have that anymore. What's the best version of this to now? I don't watch anime much anymore but I'd like to revisit this once.
