      >Eric Idle (...) is listing his Los Angeles home for $6.495 million. Built around 1930, the five-bedroom, roughly 7,000-square-foot home is located in the Hollywood Hills.
      >The Spanish Revival home has three offices, two fireplaces, a wine cellar and a den. The roughly 0.7-acre lot has a pool, a bocce court, a fountain with colorful tiles, and a Koi pond.
      >The couple did a number of renovations during their residence, including repairing the roof and renovating the bathrooms, according to Mr. Idle, who said he didn’t know how much they spent.
      >They are selling because they plan to downsize, but they hope to stay in the area, he said.

Yep. A will is ridiculously easy to challenge and there needs to be a legitimate reason to disinherit your children from your will and I'm selfish or we're estranged isn't a valid reason.

In Spain you're required by law to leave 50% of your estate to your spouse, then of the remaining half one third is divided equally among your children, one third can be divided among your children however you'd like, and then the last third you can do whatever you want with. I think it's a good system and could save everyone a lot of time.

Good for him. Working and movement keep people alive. My grandpa worked 12 hours a day built a company from scratch to 9 figure profit margins, worked until he was 80 before finally stepping down and left the company to my dad and he died within a year of retiring, my grandma aged 85 died 6 months after her dog passed at 19 because she no longer went out for walks several hours per day

You'd be surprised with how many old people literally CHOOSE to work after retirement. They have no hobbies or interests and decide just to go back to work.
I've worked in construction for the better part of 10 years now, and a shit load of the old timers were all retired, got bored of retirement, and went back to work while also receiving SS payments.

this is what my father did. hes currently 71 and has more than enough money. he "retired" a few years ago, yet then became "self-employed" doing basically the exact same job, still working almost every weekday, still goes on business trips driving/flying and staying in hotels for days at a time multiple times a month.

i dont think he took any time off for "retirement", and i think its because he has literally nothing else. he has no friends, he has no hobbies, he has no interests. literally all he does when he's not working is watch tv or youtube.

that will be me because thats basically my life right now, but i pray to god i am dead in the next few years

The really shocking thing is that they never had another show afterwards. Obviously they're all talented and brit series tend to run short anyway. Kinda weird they didn't get together and do a couple of seasons of something just for fun. It's not like their careers went anywhere either.

And I don't care what anyone says those musicals and live shows were kinda lame.

He's lived in the US most his life. Plus these people get lifestyle creep which means they act like they're destitute when they still probably earn more than most people

That being said the UK state pension isnt that big, it's mostly a safety net to stop you starving to death. Most people will have a workplace pension they have to contribute into. I think other euro countries have mainly state pensions though

Free healthcare yes, retirement pensions are much more complicated. State pensions are only awarded to men over 65 last I remember, however the rate is not living cost adjusted and so it would not be possible to live in London (Hence why older people tend to retire to the country). The alternative is the private pension schemes, biggest being the nhs pension and service pension (both private despite being state entities due to a quirk of the nhs foundation and neocon Thatcher policy). Private pensions vary hugely and are often controlled in part by unions, in Britain if Idle was receiving a pension it would most likely be through the Equity union. The very high cost of living here prices you out of most pension plans, so all in all no our benefits do not outweight the economic negatives of the UK. The one hope you get is that the nhs covers medical emergencies (but not end of life care, well at least not the kind you particularily want to stay allive for very long in)
