I have a vague memory of this. Some nobody said some stupid shit about one of his covers being unrealistic and attempted a redraw(?) which Campbell then spun into a protracted "controversy" and "draw this in your style" art challenge. Honestly it felt kind of forced like he was intentionally trying to keep the flames going to promote himself and get some free art out of people. It was like he saw the shitflinging over that Manara spiderwoman cover and thought "I can milk some outrage too." At least it resulted in some decent cheesecake I guess.
The cover in OP is an homage to ASM 601, about which there was a bit of minor internet drama, including some Tumblr artists trying to redraw it with distant body proportions.
Why is this cover $100+ on ebay? Just because of the drama around it?

Your memory of it is completely wrong, first Campbell didn't flame anything, some moron on twitter tried to "fix" his art because it was too problematic, then people outside the ecochamber started ripping on the person who was "fixing" the art, eventually several other artists came racing to draw their own takes to either ride that small controversy or just take the piss.
That's when Campbell just calmly redrew his own art, and even tried to agree on some points that pest made on being anatomically inaccurate, but they were a disingenuous little b***h who got on the defensive after Campbell himself appeared, not taking his word as a form or support, but as an attack instead, the other pests that agreed with the "fixer" cried in the same tune, thinking the man himself shouldn't ever dare to peacefully offer his own piece of mind, and even redraw the cover for fun, actually agreeing on some points the "fixer" made.
