This shot of Obi-Wan's house that was added in the 1997 re-release of Star Wars encapsulates the extent of how much the Special Editions have adulterated the artistic integrity of the original films.

The simplicity and unassuming nature of Obi-Wan's house in the theatrical release reflect the character's status as a humble hermit and reinforce his connection to the Jedi's spiritual and ascetic traditions. The carefully composed shot with the speeder positioned next to the hut adds to the sense of tranquility and solitude surrounding Obi-Wan.

On the other hand, the changes made in the Special Editions, including the alteration of this shot, showcases George Lucas' shallow priorities in placing novelty and visual spectacle over storytelling and thematic consistency. His desire to showcase advancements in special effects technology and update the visuals to match his evolving vision of the Star Wars universe has led to decisions that have altered the original film's tone and symbolism.

In this light, the changes made to the shot of Obi-Wan's house in the Special Editions is a departure from the artistic integrity of the original film, sacrificing subtle symbolism and thematic resonance for the sake of showcasing technological prowess.

I've always viewed the special editions as just another way for Lucas to get back at his wife and all of the crew members that gave him shit over his bad ideas. He's withholding the theatrical editions that they all worked on because he's still butthurt.

They get upset about EVERY change not matter how minor. They can't see how it erodes their own arguments and makes them come off and childish dorks. They treat the most outrageous, horrible changes (some of which ruined scenes and were embarrassingly bad) the same as minor, decent changes that added to the sci-fi atmosphere. Like this shot of cloud city's hallways? God forbid they want to show more off the beautiful cloud city sunset exterior, which was only not included in the original movie because it was cheaper and easier to run around an interior set.

People being butthurt over the special editions would have never become a thing if all the home media releases of OT included both the special edition and theatrical cut. Luckily there’s 4k scans of the theatrical versions available done by fans, even though they aren’t as accessible

the cloud city edits are shit because the cg background do not mesh in well at all with the original footage.
you watch these scenes in the special versions and it feels like you are watching one of the prequels with the OT super-imposed above it.

hmmm gotta say I like the special edition shot more. It better visualizes that Ben is a hermit by showing he lives in an area surrounded by nothing. Meanwhile, the original shot is much too claustrophobic and tells us his nothing about his surroundings.

I prefer the less saturated sky on Tattooine because it was supposed to be a miserable place to live with an uncomfortably hot and dusty atmosphere. The bright blue makes more sense on Yavin or wherever.

A desert planet with no water and an atmosphere so scarce with water that moisture farming is a generational profession. So why is the sky blue??

Oh so the ocean being blue is just a coincidence

Actually ocean is blue for the same reason sky is blue. When light passes through mediums like water and air, the lower wavelengths are absorbed more quickly than the higher wavelengths. So red light gets chewed up and blue light passes through.

In terms of cinematography: it would make more sense to make the sky look duller and grayer to convey the sense of Tattooine being an awful, miserable place to live in.

A bright blue sky gives too much of a joyful vibe that doesn't fit with that idea.

it's canon that tatooine once had seas, so there's still water on the planet. also it has atmosphere, hence the sky being blue.

As humor to point out the original scene (cut from the movie) is that Jabba the Hut, before RotJ, wasn't a giant slug thing and was in fact just a fat sleaze; Harrison Ford is filmed walking, talking, and circling him in the ship dock.

As humor for idiots who literally think this scene is re-shot or added or something after-the-fact; because Jabba is pathetic and Han Solo is soooo cool.

Because at a certain point in Georgie's life, I imagine sometime around his divorce from his wife he began to grow very bitter about life and Hollywood and any artistic integrity and creative impulse he had gave way to a purely financial one. George was a businessman more than he was a creative artist and ultimately he embraced that, he had a studio to grow and needing to do dumb shit like the Special Editions gave him that.

Visual spectacle is what grabs people's attention, he wanted more viewers more consumers to pay him for his works. That's all that mattered even if he sacrificed his artistry and craft for it.
