This shot of Obi-Wan's house that was added in the 1997 re-release of Star Wars encapsulates the extent of how much the Special Editions have adulterated the artistic integrity of the original films.
The simplicity and unassuming nature of Obi-Wan's house in the theatrical release reflect the character's status as a humble hermit and reinforce his connection to the Jedi's spiritual and ascetic traditions. The carefully composed shot with the speeder positioned next to the hut adds to the sense of tranquility and solitude surrounding Obi-Wan.
On the other hand, the changes made in the Special Editions, including the alteration of this shot, showcases George Lucas' shallow priorities in placing novelty and visual spectacle over storytelling and thematic consistency. His desire to showcase advancements in special effects technology and update the visuals to match his evolving vision of the Star Wars universe has led to decisions that have altered the original film's tone and symbolism.
In this light, the changes made to the shot of Obi-Wan's house in the Special Editions is a departure from the artistic integrity of the original film, sacrificing subtle symbolism and thematic resonance for the sake of showcasing technological prowess.

I've always viewed the special editions as just another way for Lucas to get back at his wife and all of the crew members that gave him shit over his bad ideas. He's withholding the theatrical editions that they all worked on because he's still butthurt.
his wife actually defended him due to how bad the sequels are
How much of a homosexual do you have to be to side with another man's ex-wife? Get a life, ankle biting beta males.
>He's withholding the theatrical editions
But I own the Widescreen Laserdisc versions?
It's literally what my father bought and what my sister and I watched when growing up. They're phenomenal.
>Where are we!? 3263827!
>*Laserdisc needs changing*
What are the changes? Show the comparison moron.
yeah the special edition shot is frankly far more telling than just a little hut with a blue sky
What's the problem? They're both small homes. One shot just looks nicer than the other.
the first shot is bland and does nothing more than establish where they are, whereas the SE shot lets us know that obi-wan went to extra lengths for his seclusion
They get upset about EVERY change not matter how minor. They can't see how it erodes their own arguments and makes them come off and childish dorks. They treat the most outrageous, horrible changes (some of which ruined scenes and were embarrassingly bad) the same as minor, decent changes that added to the sci-fi atmosphere. Like this shot of cloud city's hallways? God forbid they want to show more off the beautiful cloud city sunset exterior, which was only not included in the original movie because it was cheaper and easier to run around an interior set.
despecialized looks better here
I thought the cities were so high that you couldn't go outside. i like it better when everything is in doors.
No, even in the non-special editions they are outside when they land and they go outside when they shoot at Boba Fett's escaping ship and get on the Falcon
right I haven't seen these movies in awhile
People being butthurt over the special editions would have never become a thing if all the home media releases of OT included both the special edition and theatrical cut. Luckily there’s 4k scans of the theatrical versions available done by fans, even though they aren’t as accessible
the cloud city edits are shit because the cg background do not mesh in well at all with the original footage.
you watch these scenes in the special versions and it feels like you are watching one of the prequels with the OT super-imposed above it.
you can throw in as many flying cars as you want, it's still obvious they're running through a fricking hallway here
I'm so glad I watched the original Laserdisc versions and not the new shit.
I had completely forgotten that people are used to watching the original trilogy with the new effects and saturation and CG shit, and had no idea the originals never even looked like that.
Criminy.
hmmm gotta say I like the special edition shot more. It better visualizes that Ben is a hermit by showing he lives in an area surrounded by nothing. Meanwhile, the original shot is much too claustrophobic and tells us his nothing about his surroundings.
If anything Lucas figured out it was moronic to have a hermit living in the desert without any water.
I love the sky being more blue in all the special editions before the newest disney version even though it's closer to the theatrical cut
why would they do that
here's theatrical, I think they went too far with the grayness in the disney blurays
3PO likes moronic in the 2020 version
I prefer the less saturated sky on Tattooine because it was supposed to be a miserable place to live with an uncomfortably hot and dusty atmosphere. The bright blue makes more sense on Yavin or wherever.
dusty atmosphere doesn't mean the sky isn't blue, you're thinking of china with its smog
Smog is particles. Dust is particles.
yeah and they affect the environment in different ways
Fricking moron
Says the man starting arguments over fictional biomes.
>original > 2011 > disney
Exactly my thought
the film grain actually helps the original and the colors aren't as washed out as Disney's version
Yeah George went way overboard with the DNR in all his movies’ bluray releases
why does nobody understand color anymore?
left definitely looks better. Sure the tone may be different but I'd like to actually see what I'm looking at rather than having to squint through the washed out filter on the right
Bro, the special edition mogs the original hard.
it does a better job at establishing the setting of Tatooine and create a stronger overall sci-fi feeling
None of the changes Lucas made to Star Wars were any good. Not a one.
being a jedi doesn't mean being amish. you can have a vaporator
Not exactly breaking new ground here. Yes, the consensus is the special editions were trash. Star Wars is the thx remaster released right before the special editions and nothing more.
A desert planet with no water and an atmosphere so scarce with water that moisture farming is a generational profession. So why is the sky blue??
water has nothing to do with sky being blue
Oh so the ocean being blue is just a coincidence
Actually ocean is blue for the same reason sky is blue. When light passes through mediums like water and air, the lower wavelengths are absorbed more quickly than the higher wavelengths. So red light gets chewed up and blue light passes through.
Lol dumbass the ocean is blue because it reflects the sky
Ackshually water is inherently blue, but it looks clear in small quantities.
In terms of cinematography: it would make more sense to make the sky look duller and grayer to convey the sense of Tattooine being an awful, miserable place to live in.
A bright blue sky gives too much of a joyful vibe that doesn't fit with that idea.
it's canon that tatooine once had seas, so there's still water on the planet. also it has atmosphere, hence the sky being blue.
wow that's way fricking more washed out than i remember it being. last time i watched all the films was after the 4k edits were put on d+.
His movies. Not yours.
>his movies
Not anymore, sweaty 🙂
Truly not his movies as we can tell by the latest versions released under disney which he had nothing to do with
where do I watch 4K77? and the rest?
I can't believe disney hasn't tried to sell it somewhere yet.
Go to some torrent site and search for 4K77, 4K80 and 4K83, that’s the easiest way. Otherwise you’ll need to join forums.thestarwarstrilogy.com and it’s a pain in the ass to look for an invitation code to create an account
The worst part about the Special Editions is that they didn't go far enough. There's still plenty of things that need fixed and look bad.
Probably the most autistic thread I've seen on Cinemaphile in a while.
>People remarking about how the original Star Wars films, produced in the late 70s and early 80s over 40 years ago, look different from "photoshopped" over-saturated remakes that are AI upscaled.
Take 1 = "And that's a bad thing. The originals did not need that.
>Autists! Demented old losers! Nerds! Give me money, grandpa!
Take 2 = "And that's a good thing. The originals are so outdated."
>Obviously! Everyone knows that, already! Don't talk about things you like!!
You can't enjoy things anymore...
>Why are hobbyists so into their hobby???
frick off
hownew.ru
why did he do it
As humor to point out the original scene (cut from the movie) is that Jabba the Hut, before RotJ, wasn't a giant slug thing and was in fact just a fat sleaze; Harrison Ford is filmed walking, talking, and circling him in the ship dock.
As humor for idiots who literally think this scene is re-shot or added or something after-the-fact; because Jabba is pathetic and Han Solo is soooo cool.
>MACLUNKEY
>He was making a slight move to the right, I had to get it on
>AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA YAAAAAAAAAH
Do they even HAVE the iconic song(s) from the original anymore? Like, is this "Cantina" song even in the later releases?
https://www.youtube.com/wastch?v=nSRwzP23ifI
modern star wars fans are genuine 60 IQ morons who just want to watch cartoon stormtroopers shoot battle droids over and over and over again and would defend lucas literally replacing 40 minutes of every movie with footage of himself taking a fat shit to own the libs (disney) epic style
>stormtroopers
What slays me is watching GROWN ADULTS (but also teenagers) apparently "learning" that the militaries had "stormtroopers," too.
>How the FRICK did NAZI GERMANY know the future to call their soldiers a termed coined by STAR WARS!?!?
>"...you can't be serious? Do you even know what a stormtrooper is?"
>Yeah, of course I do! They're the white armor guys with guns from Star Wars, I just said that!!
People are shockingly stupid.
Because at a certain point in Georgie's life, I imagine sometime around his divorce from his wife he began to grow very bitter about life and Hollywood and any artistic integrity and creative impulse he had gave way to a purely financial one. George was a businessman more than he was a creative artist and ultimately he embraced that, he had a studio to grow and needing to do dumb shit like the Special Editions gave him that.
Visual spectacle is what grabs people's attention, he wanted more viewers more consumers to pay him for his works. That's all that mattered even if he sacrificed his artistry and craft for it.
