Why is this the default for sci-fi now? I was watching Rebel Moon with the mates yesterday and I was blown away at how utterly masculine most of the framing and set-pieces were, but then you flip over to the protagonist and she's an utterly generic ethnic brown girl. All of the villains are white, even the gay rapist was a white pig (literal.) The only heroic white guy is the ethnic girl's love interest, and when I think about him I realize every interaction he has with the protagonist is what a woman would accuse old movies of doing with female characters. He just sits there to provide exposition while being vaguely useless but well-intentioned.
And that had me thinking about sci-fi in general. How Star Wars hasn't really had a new male protagonist since Andor and how the Mandalorian was so cautious about having a male protagonist that everyone around the protagonist had to be a hyper-competent woman. Men just don't really exist in sci-fi anymore unless they're villains or love interests. We've solved nothing as a culture except invert the genders so now women are the heroes and men the support, and yet somehow women still get to claim they're the underdogs.
It's all so tiresome.
Was it just me, or did Sofia seem like she was trying to stop her face from contorting into a disgusted look for 90% of the movie? It was very off-putting.
Sofia is solid in this. But there is a scene early in the movie where they close up on her face when she it telling the rapist soldiers to stop. And at that exact moment you can see her channeling her inner K-Stew. Seeing that I bet it came down to her and Sofia when Zack was contemplating who to cast for the lead.

Possibly. Might be totally wrong though. Kora's hesitation when it comes to saving her from the rape suggests otherwise in fact. Age gap between princess actress and village girl actress is 6 years, I think, which isn't a disqualifier but makes it more complicated. And both actresses have relatively prominent moles on their faces but on different sides. So the parallels might merely be thematic and not suggestive of much more.

so since it's a trilogy, what's the overarching plot / threat? is it literally just rebels vs the empire?
The empire wants 10,000 bushels of wheat from a small village. That's literally it. That's the entire plot of the trilogy. Nothing was resolved at the end of the first movie.
And actually now that I think about it the plot is even worse than that. The empire offered to pay 3x market rate for the wheat surplus but the villagers lied to the empire. So now the empire is going to take more wheat but at the same 3x price which would make the village rich so they could buy more food from someone else. It is never explained why this is a bad deal or why the empire needs this particular wheat crop so bad.
I'd like to know why they go to the village when there is a big town where surely they would be able to buy the grain from several traders, or the governor or whatever would be able to hook them up.
You'd think an empire would have a functional trade system. It's not like this was a war band in the middle of a war trying to secure food nearby.

I think it's just because Snyder saw soldiers do this in a movie once and didn't understand why they were doing it during a war and not during peace time. He copies tropes without understanding what made them work in the first place. Same problem with most hollywood writers today.

I'm not a fan of writing an alternate movie and presenting it, but why didn't they come to demand the use of their village as a forward base for their operation and to be fed and housed for as long as they're there. Instead he wants all their wheat, once it's grown, which I guess he's just going to fly off with? While he searches that planet for rebel connections? I guess he's not in a rush if he's coming back in ten weeks, but he can't find a supply of wheat anywhere else than a shitty little village? But also leaves a garrison of his rapiest troops.
I had assumed it would be revealed in the conversation that he already knew someone from the village had sold wheat to the rebels and that was why there were really there, but no apparently he just picked that farming village to land at.

Probably because the ship just appears massively in the sky right above them but somehow no one noticed it coming, and only the protagonist notices the giant rumbling spaceship in the sky and has to ring the bell. Wouldn't it be more effective in selling her being ex-military to notice the signs of the spaceship dropping into orbit or something? Instead they finally notice when it's practically about to land.
The ship isn't nearly big enough to be an overwhelming death force. The flyby shots remind of Farscape, looks like shit. At least Farscape had a budget excuse.

If there is other shit going on they didn't bother to put it in the movie. It's just a plot about wheat and gathering soldiers to stop the empire from buying wheat at 3x the market rate. Empire even offered to give them free robots to harvest the wheat faster but the moronic villagers denied the request because they like working hard.
In fairness I think the 3x price was a ruse, and if not, the offer was off the table after smashing the guys head open.

Imagine telling your audience in advance that you're only releasing a butchered, censored cut of the movie in advance and are cynically holding on to the real cut to generate artificial hype. Telling them this to their faces. A fricking marketing disaster.
Making "the REAL movie is 4 hours long and comes later, forget this one" your signature is not smart. He's done it three times now, and only one of them was legitimate (Justice League, on account of much of it being reshot by another director with another script).
