Nothing happened besides 2 characters building a team, introducing members of the team, then they barely interact with each other then land at the final battle at the end. There is little to no character interaction, it’s all just set up for a second part or a big directors cut with actual character moments

      >Strong woman protagonist
Why is this the default for sci-fi now? I was watching Rebel Moon with the mates yesterday and I was blown away at how utterly masculine most of the framing and set-pieces were, but then you flip over to the protagonist and she's an utterly generic ethnic brown girl. All of the villains are white, even the gay rapist was a white pig (literal.) The only heroic white guy is the ethnic girl's love interest, and when I think about him I realize every interaction he has with the protagonist is what a woman would accuse old movies of doing with female characters. He just sits there to provide exposition while being vaguely useless but well-intentioned.

And that had me thinking about sci-fi in general. How Star Wars hasn't really had a new male protagonist since Andor and how the Mandalorian was so cautious about having a male protagonist that everyone around the protagonist had to be a hyper-competent woman. Men just don't really exist in sci-fi anymore unless they're villains or love interests. We've solved nothing as a culture except invert the genders so now women are the heroes and men the support, and yet somehow women still get to claim they're the underdogs.

      It's all so tiresome.

Was it just me, or did Sofia seem like she was trying to stop her face from contorting into a disgusted look for 90% of the movie? It was very off-putting.

Sofia is solid in this. But there is a scene early in the movie where they close up on her face when she it telling the rapist soldiers to stop. And at that exact moment you can see her channeling her inner K-Stew. Seeing that I bet it came down to her and Sofia when Zack was contemplating who to cast for the lead.

kek, honestly thats pretty accurate. Her line deliveries were mostly decent, and she looked....fine in the action scenes, but her face looked like it was struggling to stay in the weird neutral space most of the time.
Also, starting to get the feeling that ACK has run out of ideas on how to film action scenes with firearms.

Watching the movie again right now and there is a shot where the camera zooms on in Charlie Hunnam's face. Its when he is standing in the doorway when they are all getting ready to leave the cantina after the shootout. It is EXACTLY the face Brad Pitt makes when he smirks in Snatch. The one that they show in all of the trailers and promo shots for Snatch.

              Zack is an absolute madman.

You would have a point if he was actually pandering to women. Like if he originally wanted the protagonist to be a strong male but changed it to a woman for pozzed woke points or political reasons.

But any true Snyderchad understands that this is exact the the movie he wanted to make with the main character he wanted to put in it. He's been doing sexy strong female leads since Sucker Punch.

I figured this halfway through that scene of her randomly talking to the robot in a saintly manner and crowning him with flowers, it came out of nowhere, given she in theory has never even seen a robot before if she's a peasant girl. Then they just started piling on more obvious "clues".

Possibly. Might be totally wrong though. Kora's hesitation when it comes to saving her from the rape suggests otherwise in fact. Age gap between princess actress and village girl actress is 6 years, I think, which isn't a disqualifier but makes it more complicated. And both actresses have relatively prominent moles on their faces but on different sides. So the parallels might merely be thematic and not suggestive of much more.

They played the same music theme in the flashback to the princess raising the bird, and had the girl touch the robot in a way it reacted to on some deep level, then it broke its pacifism routine specifically to save her.

Also, why was the robot not the main character?

            >theme
As I said, it might just be a thematic connection. This was after all what made Kora decide to follow the call to adventure, while what happened with the princess broke her and made her go into exile.

It's a Synder fanfic nerd jerkoff that can't decide which setting it wants to be fanfic of.

    As for the story itself:
    >bad guys show up, they look like commissars and techpriests from 40k accompanied by soldiers who are clearly imperial guard (FFS they are from the 'academy militarium')
    >Their big space empire is called 'The Imperium'. Fricking hell.
    >They want to steal our grain, it's A Fricking Bug's Life in the 40k universe.
    >oh shit we gotta stop them
    >cue montage assembling a ragtag team of misfits to take down the baddies.
    >Nothing original about any character in the entire film, yet film unloads entire backstories to these people in a horrendously condensed manner and we just don't fricking care and have been given no chance to develop any sort of attachment to a single damn one of them.
    >80% of the film assembling a team for a big battle at the remaining 20% at the end and even this just manages to be a cliche rip off of the cloud city betrayal in star wars and literally any other star was battle scene, you fricking pick.
    >Bad guy of course is brought back at the end for round two because why would Zack Snyder invent a new villain that could actually be interesting when he can continue rehashing every aspect of his shitty universe?

It's quite pozzed in terms of casting. The village to be saved is an Aryan allegory and the villain is a degenerate homosexual. Sexual degeneracy is equalled to evil all throughout the film. The revolutionaries are BLM activists but the pure force-wielding magical princess is as white as snow. Mixed bag.

so since it's a trilogy, what's the overarching plot / threat? is it literally just rebels vs the empire?

      Anonymous

The empire wants 10,000 bushels of wheat from a small village. That's literally it. That's the entire plot of the trilogy. Nothing was resolved at the end of the first movie.

        Anonymous

And actually now that I think about it the plot is even worse than that. The empire offered to pay 3x market rate for the wheat surplus but the villagers lied to the empire. So now the empire is going to take more wheat but at the same 3x price which would make the village rich so they could buy more food from someone else. It is never explained why this is a bad deal or why the empire needs this particular wheat crop so bad.

          Anonymous

I'd like to know why they go to the village when there is a big town where surely they would be able to buy the grain from several traders, or the governor or whatever would be able to hook them up.

I think it's just because Snyder saw soldiers do this in a movie once and didn't understand why they were doing it during a war and not during peace time. He copies tropes without understanding what made them work in the first place. Same problem with most hollywood writers today.

I'm not a fan of writing an alternate movie and presenting it, but why didn't they come to demand the use of their village as a forward base for their operation and to be fed and housed for as long as they're there. Instead he wants all their wheat, once it's grown, which I guess he's just going to fly off with? While he searches that planet for rebel connections? I guess he's not in a rush if he's coming back in ten weeks, but he can't find a supply of wheat anywhere else than a shitty little village? But also leaves a garrison of his rapiest troops.

I had assumed it would be revealed in the conversation that he already knew someone from the village had sold wheat to the rebels and that was why there were really there, but no apparently he just picked that farming village to land at.

Probably because the ship just appears massively in the sky right above them but somehow no one noticed it coming, and only the protagonist notices the giant rumbling spaceship in the sky and has to ring the bell. Wouldn't it be more effective in selling her being ex-military to notice the signs of the spaceship dropping into orbit or something? Instead they finally notice when it's practically about to land.

The ship isn't nearly big enough to be an overwhelming death force. The flyby shots remind of Farscape, looks like shit. At least Farscape had a budget excuse.

you're shitting me. there's literally no way that a sci-fi trilogy that was promoted as being heckin star wars but for adults is about 1 village on some planet somewhere not giving the empire wheat. there has to be SOME OTHER SHIT going on here

          Anonymous

If there is other shit going on they didn't bother to put it in the movie. It's just a plot about wheat and gathering soldiers to stop the empire from buying wheat at 3x the market rate. Empire even offered to give them free robots to harvest the wheat faster but the moronic villagers denied the request because they like working hard.

In fairness I think the 3x price was a ruse, and if not, the offer was off the table after smashing the guys head open.

Would be nice if they gave the audience this info. As it stands the empire was being very decent and the villagers are a bunch of morons, liars, traitors, and buttholes.

See the thing is, this Part 1 and Part 2 is not the trilogy, it's just the first "movie". He proposed a trilogy, then had to split the first movie into two movies because it's so overstuffed...and will have longer cuts of both parts that are R rated. Are all the supposed entries in this would be saga gonna be multiple parts? I don't know.

Imagine telling your audience in advance that you're only releasing a butchered, censored cut of the movie in advance and are cynically holding on to the real cut to generate artificial hype. Telling them this to their faces. A fricking marketing disaster.

Making "the REAL movie is 4 hours long and comes later, forget this one" your signature is not smart. He's done it three times now, and only one of them was legitimate (Justice League, on account of much of it being reshot by another director with another script).

      >the villain is dissappointing
Why does Snyder keep talking about how deep and interesting he is when he's just an irredeemably evil, mustache twirling prick who does everything for the lulz? I don't care if he's played by WHOLESOME ED SKREIN CHUNGUS he's a boring, worthless character.

That's what Snyder does. Talk at length about a bunch of shit that's never evident in any of his movies. Look at him talk about the band of warriors assembled.
        >>“They’re all misfits,” Snyder says. “They’re all healing and finding a place to belong. It’s a movie about finding a family.” In fact, the director, whose previous blockbusters include 300 and Man of Steel, continues by teasing a scene where Kora and her teammates look upon Veldt and agree that the moon is so beautiful that it’s worth dying on — or fighting hard enough to live upon. “That’s really at the heart of the movie in a lot of ways: Kora finding a place to call home, something that she wants to protect.”
Where the frick is any of that in the film? He always throws out these claims of depth and complexity but it never actually comes across in his movies, they're just crude simplistic narratives bumping around.

See, James Gunn could say this about GOTG and yes, I can see that, it is indeed about some misfits finding a family, the film revolves around it. Rebel Moon did not revolve around this. One of the worst movies I've seen and shows all the limitations of these capeshit directors.
Snyder put in all his worst stuff, skinny women, girl boss, slow motion, bad choreography, fight scenes where the stunt waits to be hit, predictable plot with generic Star Wars and Foundation elements, at first it looked like a movie inspired by Metal Hurlant but after 15 minutes, I saw that Snyder went with a PG13 version without sexy women, blood or any hint of sex, like a generic MCU universe that no one wants now.
I thought that outside of Star Wars, Snyder was going to bring a bad ass female character, a Darth Talon, sexy, with that sexy costume that
Kathleen Kennedy censored in the last Star Wars movies but no, he came up with that same universe where everyone dresses like farmers, how can people be so stupid as to invest their money in this?

      >I'm super proud of the PG-13 version, the broader audience version, because I would say it really satisfies an awesome, timeless, mythological scope. What we’ve done with the other version is fun and subversive because an R-rated sci-fi movie at this scale shouldn’t exist. It's a full hour longer. It's not just slightly different or a little bit more. There are big chunks of the movie that are different.
      >"[I] had really wanted to keep the movie close to two hours. That was like a thing I really wanted to do. I just felt like these two movies together, if they're both about two hours each, and I think movie two is even shorter, it's like an hour and 54 minutes — it's like, I think, one of the first movies I've made that’s under two hours, which is incredible — that was the sort of thing I had in my mind was that I really wanted to keep it close to two hours. So Dody [Dorn] and I, he's an amazing editor, it was really the exercise of like, “Okay, what's the leanest line through the movie?” And that was the game we played with ourselves – only good shots, the best, cleanest line. That was the way that we went about finding what stuck. What stayed in the juggernaut of the movie is what we were looking for, and that was really how we did it.
      >Netflix were the ones that came up with the idea for the director’s cut. And I was like, ‘Absolutely perfect!’ It gives me the ability to work on the PG-13 version not in opposition to the studio, but in coordination with them, because I know I always have the director’s cut [too]. So as I make cuts and adjust this movie down so that it’s PG-13 and two hours, I don’t feel like I’m being pushed into it. Whereas my relationship with the studios in the past has always been that the version that’s released theatrically – for me, anyway – is always a little bit of a fight.
That's Snyder's words. This was not some shock thrust upon him at the last minute. He knew from the start he was making a PG13 and an R rated version.

I think that's one thing that you'll see in the director's cut that is different from the PG-13 version is the irony of a super hard R-rated sci-fi movie at this scale is cleaner in the R-rated version.
