Reminder that the commentary confirmed Chelsea really did feel sympathy for Ruby's plight (even though it adds up to literal nothing and the very nature of her reveal makes everything she says and does contain doubt)
If mermaids are capable of empathy, they cannot be 100% evil
If mermaids aren't inherently pure evil, then that would mean Grandmamah desiring genocide onto them is actually in the morally wrong and Agatha should have been in the right to refuse such a thing despite the film going against that

      Anonymous

If mermaids are capabile of empathy (as shown by Chelsea) , and fear ( remember Chelsea said they're hiding and live in actual FEAR) Grandmamah is a monster.

So, their relationship is inherently wholesome?

Yeah until the last 15 minutes ruined everything
They had a perfect Anne/Sasha dynamic and just wasted it on the dumbest writing imaginable

If mermaids are capabile of empathy (as shown by Chelsea) , and fear ( remember Chelsea said they're hiding and live in actual FEAR) Grandmamah is a monster.

Reminder that the director equates Agatha hiding from Ruby about her past to the mermaid race hiding because they don't want to fricking die

      Anonymous

      >Reminder that the commentary confirmed Chelsea really did feel sympathy for Ruby's plight
Ah frick it, and here goes me theorising that maybe they were building up to mermaids being evil because they're immortal

        Anonymous

        >Nobody was commenting on anything else other than [Ruby and Chelsea's] relationship
        >So what's going on? Are they friends, are they enemies?
        >And the other one is that one shot, the reaction shot. Did you see?
        >Yes, so many people saying "But she cares for her!"
        >And you know, we always said that was a part of that...
        >You know, her battle was with her mom and her grandmother, and, you know,
        >she might at that moment have really understood how it feels to be alone.
        >Because we don't know if Chelsea/Nerissa doesn't feel these things at all.
        >Yeah, the mermaids are hiding. She does feel alienated.
        >So that moment of connection could genuinely [be real]
        >If you think of a great, you know, James Bond movie...
        >Humanizing the villain is what you're trying to do
        >They say it's like a villain is the hero of her own story, right?
        >She doesn't believe she's bad. She's just trying to get something done.

          Anonymous

Okay here's me trying to understand the Nerissa shit:
Maybe she feels guilty over losing the war? And having the entire mermaids go into hiding? Maybe that's why she left because she couldn't handle the shame? Id say peer pressure but we know she's alone so, god fricking dammit

            Anonymous

            >that's why she left because she couldn't handle the shame?
            b***h wants revenge
            That's understandable
It's her having the capacity of actually feeling empathy for the daughter of her arch-enemy that raises questions

They're pulling this stuff out of their asses, blatantly coming up with retroactive justifications for what actually happened: writing Chelsea as two different characters in order to trick not just Ruby, but the viewers themselves. These moments are all spread throughout the film in contexts which make no sense at all.

            Anonymous

If the ideea was to make Chelsea sympathise with Ruby , why not make her show a hint of hesitation when betraying her?

You really think its damage control or shitty storytelling skills? Like it would be absurd to convince someone that the big bad Nerissa just needed a kraken friend

              >You really think its damage control
Anon, this commentary probably came out before the movie came out in the public
It lines up perfectly given the scene they were discussing regarding Chelsea's morality is the Super Seagirl Besties scene (you know, the one we were baffled marketing would release to begin with?) which was on YouTube before said released
They were commenting about reactions to it wondering what was the dynamic Ruby and Chelsea had

If the mom was the strongest living being in the ocean why did she hide the trident? Why didn't she just keep it?

      Anonymous

Storyboard: Agatha hides the trident from Grandma so she can't finish off the mermaids (she feels sympathy for them) ,also so that the mermaids don't fight back.
Movie: who knows why she even left to the surface, let alone hide the trident.

        Anonymous

She just wanted to stop fighting period
Not out of compassion or sympathy
No she just didn't want to inherit the family business

That's not enough of an answer
The trident would have been safer on the surface with her

          Anonymous

I suppose since mermaids have more popularity on the surface , it's so that they don't get it back or something? Idk a lot of this movie is just *plot convenience*

            Anonymous

You're asking for this plot to make sense?
Besides, she hid it in a spot where only a giant kraken could reach
Grandmamah's the only one left in the ocean

It doesn't even make sense as a way to move the plot
Having the protagonist steal from her mother would have made a better more emotional scene with the mother being deeply hurt that her daughter stole from her and that things got that bad
We could have even gotten a scene of both of them fighting as the daughter thinks her mom is trying to stop her from helping the mermaids when I. Reality she is stopping her from giving a weapon to a terrorist

                Anonymous

That's the easiest shit ever to fix, have the ending realise that a situation like Chelsea (where her mother was killed) would've been prevented if they didn't jump to the final solution, this gives Agatha an insanely close connection to Chelsea, Grandma as well if she realises the errors of her war waging ways. As well as Ruby. But instead they made it more personal to absolutely nobody.

              Anonymous

Yes but otherwise the kraken-mermaid war wouldn't have happened. Perhaps a way to work this: Agatha kills Nerissa, gets the trident, Grandma comes to collect trident, Grandma tells her plan (perhaps fueled by hatred from her relatives perishing) to eradicate the mermaids, Agatha refuses to give her the trident as she doesn't want her mother to succumb to her hatred and do the unthinkable. Agatha hides the trident and goes to the surface (heartbroken&angry at her mom for training her to be the siren slayer, also a bit of shame, and saddened by the maniac she bacame)

      Really strong complimenting designs
Really strong hot girl/cute girl dynamic
Chelsea is unironically proof Ruby could have loved herself for being a giant kraken without her being drafted for war

Reminder the co-director said mermaids are the "mean girls" of the ocean
Even got compared to Regina George (except even she became a better person at the end of Mean Girls since the people who made that movie understood she isnt pure evil)
This somehow justifies them almost going through a genocide and forced into hiding (that and adds another point to them being mentally teens as well)

      Anonymous

      >understood she isnt pure evil
But anon, even Chelsea is humanized , see she's the hero of her own story! That's why she becomes a one-dimensional mustache twirler!

        Anonymous

        >see she's the hero of her own story!
That would make so much more sense if she was still Nerissa's daughter
Because again, what do you expect someone who was orphaned, homeless, and alone for 99% of their life and had the chance to get revenge

          Anonymous

          >orhpaned homeless, and alone
Don't forget , living in fear and in hiding. I know the Magneto comparison was made once before but "The human race hated them and feared them and shunned them and was trying to get rid of them, so why should they take it laying down? Why didn’t they fight back?" And they ruined a magneto level villain god dammit
