          >To preface, merging with the shadow is typically a bad thing as it is the process of the suppressed id overwriting or controlling the ego. According to Jung, the shadow sometimes overwhelms a person's actions; for example, when the conscious mind is shocked, confused, or paralyzed by indecision. "A man who is possessed by his shadow is always standing in his own light and falling into his own traps...living below his own level."[47]:123 Hence, in terms of the story of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, "it must be Jekyll, the conscious personality, who integrates the shadow ... and not vice versa. Otherwise the conscious becomes the slave of the autonomous shadow."[50]
          Looks like merging to me.

She did set up a military science facility beneath a shrine full of priests and children. Which is pretty fricked up. Though nobody ever seems to concerned about the Alds' plan to rape and murder most of the girls in the shrine. That seems to get a pass or at least glossed over.

She absolutely engendered the open civil war part of the Foi-Hellick affair as part of her plot with Roger

That's just warfare. You can't tell me Alderode wouldn't try to do the same thing if the opportunity arose.

I'm more talking from the thread's perspective. Lot of anons have a serious hate boner for her as though she's literally the worst person in the setting even though that's far from true. She's not exactly a beacon of morality by any means, but both sides have committed atrocities and all in service of a war that has been going on for generations.

            Anonymous

It's moreso that this part of the story's very much from the Cresce perspective so you're getting a lot of faces and names put to said atrocities. If Cope lives long enough to get into book 2 I'm sure there'll be plenty of things said about the Aldish state, too.
so far you just kind of have Lemuel, who's also fricked up but in a completely different way

She is at least partially responsible for all the horrible things that happened at the Twin Temple.
She is the leader of a culture that was celebrating its annual human sacrifice and cannibalism.
Then you got all the horrible things she is sponsoring the black tongues for.

That is A LOT of recent things to hate the queen for.

Duane's culture has a lot of buttholes too, but the queen is a total butthole.

              Anonymous

worth pointing out that a little over half of Alderode also does the cannibalism and human sacrifice

You do remember that Gefendur is basically the de facto religion of the entire continent right? Cresce maybe Gefendur but that's not Sonorie's doing. That was long in place before she was even alive. Even Alderode is full of Gefendur. Blaming all that on Sonorie is kinda silly.

And Alds are sponsoring the black tongues too. EVERYONE sponsors the black tongues, even if most hate to admit it, because they know the Black Tongues create lots of technology.

What I'm telling you is that from an emotional perspective the vileness of the queen has been more immediately evidenced.

The point is kinda that she isn't actually responsible for his woes. She's obviously responsible for as much monstrous stuff as all the other world leaders in this comic but for Duane she's just an easy target for him to channel his hatred into instead of looking deeper.

        Anonymous

As far as Duane goes, she doesn't warrant any particularly special hatred beyond what the average Ald feels about her. Duane has hated her particularly for years because he thinks that she orchestrated his death (due to the message that was painted over his corpse).

The truth is she had no hand in his death. It was mercenaries, some of them Aldish, who killed him and his own brother was involved in making it happen on some level. Duane just started to put this together last chapter, particularly upon learning that his daughter has actually been alive all this time. But shit is so stressful that he has basically regressed into a safer "truth", that the Queen is the architect of all his suffering, which is particularly easy for him to do since she's right in front of him sorta.

She did orchestrate with giant strawberry man to start the civil war that made lemon TOO far gone, lead them to experience war first hand, and did much damage to his nation and compatriots (and lighted the current conflict)

Without it, there wouldn't be assassination attempts, bloody children in the snow or rector Duane training the church soldiers

For all her bluster, I think deep down, Sette truly believed Duane's chivalrous ald hype. That Duane was truly this upstanding, super moral guy who would do the right thing when it finally came down to it. Is it wrong that I understand Duane here?
Duty is a strong force, and if one innocent has to die so 500 others don’t, if that’s what you perceive as your duty then it kinda has to be discharged?
We know that all players are liars thanks to godly oversight, but duane looking to discharge his understood obligations even after death is… Not that shocking.
If crisis passes and he works with Sonorie towards a common goal that would be optimal, like she’s an actor but 3 times nice breasts bird has been contriving this desperation since time began.
Ilgynang is the kiss of death for all if allowed out of her prison, think we all know that, she wasn’t imprisoned for no reason - but are we forced into an arc for Duane to realise it himself? Probably yes.

There's two planes of existence essential. The physical world and the "spiritual" world known as the khert. The khert essentially regulates the physicsl world, and when a human dies, their "soul" returns to the khert and all their memories are stored there.

In the physical world, scholars are able to map out the khert to a limited degree with a technique called sounding. But the deepest areas of the khert cannot be observed this way, those those areas are the unsounded. It is believed that those areas are where the gods of the story's two religions reside.

As living Duane said, if even one innocent has to die for the "cause", he doesn't know if he can believe in it.

He started to like when Sette picked his pockets? Feels kinda like he has stockholm syndrome? Dude has a fetish for being abused by little girls and monster woman. Also I'm guessing this confirms he doesn't look at Sette as his daughter anymore. Same with Sette not letting Duane take Nary's place. That father daughter dynamic is dead and buried. Also Sette loves him very, very much. But hasn't directly told him. She needs to do that before he's completely lost.

I guess ilganyag's plan, whatever it is, is going to work. Incidentally, has she ever failed to manipulate people into doing her bidding? Eh, how do you think cons work? You keep people and information separated, you play on biases and insecurities, you lie and tell half-truths, and you make people believe what you want them to do is the stuff they always wanted to do anyway.

yeah, of course. I just don't like things going perfectly just because it feels too clean on the villain's end, at least in most stories.

Eh, how do you think cons work? You keep people and information separated, you play on biases and insecurities, you lie and tell half-truths, and you make people believe what you want them to do is the stuff they always wanted to do anyway.

I mean, sure, cons kind of work such that the people being suckered don't notice anything, but it always feels just a little contrived when some insane confluence of circumstances was actually everything going completely as planned. Like, you're really going to tell me the plan had no unforseen events come up, and the villain never had to improvise or be even slightly caught off-guard? Though I'm complaining more about other media in general now, not unsounded; I don't even know if this'll be the case.
