Then there was a generation or two that cared about their health but now it’s gone full circle and you have millennials/zoomers drinking, vaping, and taking prescription drugs all at once while staying up for days at a time.

Warners was only able to do that because of how laws work in regards to mergers, generally studios cannot just take random shows off their service and use it as a tax write off, why dont you people ever google anything, do you enjoy being stupid?

Of course they can. It's called writing down or in extreme cases writing off an asset. Happens every day at different companies for different types of assets.

The difference in a merger, is that an acquiring company can write down an asset more quickly than they can normally.

yes it does because the show still cost them money from residuals and other shit. There can be agreements like Paramount paying monthly royalties to the guy who wrote the theme song and shit like that. If nobody is watching the show Paramount is metaphorically just throwing money into a hole every month.

        Anonymous

The way residuals currently work on streaming platforms is the payments are calculated based on the number of subscribers the service has, not how many people actually watch a particular show. So whether a show is a big hit that everyone's watching or a massive bomb that nobody's watching the residual payouts are the same.

what's more pathetic is that OP has a twitter account.

At least there was a short time when networks rereleased old shows on tapes and dvds. For a while even niche stuff got official releases for fans and the studios made something from it without burning fans.
Streaming was advertized to us as a new better thing from old broadcast tv. Turns out it is worse, especially with this write off loop hole.
Why invest in a show if they can cancel it and also wipe it from existance? They are pretty much encouraging people to pirate media they like at this point because you never know when that show you like is getting deleted off the servers.

      Anonymous

Back, back in the day, studios would send out pilots of shows on vhs to random people and ask for their feedback. The tapes would erase as you watched them. That way, if the show never became anything, there would be no evidence of its existence.

This, they'd also execute the people who watched them after getting the feedback and cover up the assassinations to truly wipe any existence of the pilot entirely.

so they put them on bs nonsense shows to fill the quota coz they need to be kept on they can't just hire seasonal workers from fiverr.

If they keep it on their platform, they have to pay out residuals. Since streaming services don't want to release viewership numbers, every series gets a cut based on the subscription numbers rather than if anyone actually watched their show.

So rather than pay out this communism-inspired amount, they just purge it from the service and pay nothing.

What is the appeal of this? It's kind of like the CW replacing the supernatural time slot with the dike batwoman show and expecting it to hit the same numbers. Women watched that show because of the hot guys, they don't want to see some angry lesbian. Here I'm assuming these were all gay women and the guys were moronic, it's literally made for no one.

    >A They/Them wants to be one of the greasers, but they say no, because she's a woman. She randomly has a lesbian kiss scene, and it's not earned at all. There's one scene though, where she corners a closeted gay guy and attempts to frick him. When he says no, she yells that if he were a real man, he'd like it. The man then runs away, about to cry. Unintentionally funny.
    >Showed adult women all taking pills and hating life being stay at home moms. Tired trope, at this point.
    >Races are all mixed together, and nobody cares. Then, there's an episode where they bring up segregation being real, and bad. Then it doesn't matter again lmao

Shows so bad they get removed from streaming is why the writers strike is happening. Streaming services have to pay to keep these terrible shows on their platform, but no one is watching them. Writers don't care that no one watches it and still want to get paid.

Wait. If this is the 50's... shouldn't this man in a dress be sent to a sanitarium? And electro shocked until he's cured? And so should the gays for that matter. Also why is the school integrated with blacks and mexicans? Ruby Bridges didn't get to go to an integrated school until the mid 60's. Bro what the frick? I'm not even white. But I can see why this shit failed. They don't respect Grease at all.

The troony is implied to be a dream/figment of frumpy asian's imagination.

Ok so it's a rip off of Beauty School Drop Out without the charm?

I don't know what that is. It's a musical number about a girl's fear of following her dream of becoming a fashion designer, where a troony representing the concept of bold fashion tells her she won't make it if she abandons her friends and goes on her own.

Beauty School Drop out is a dream sequence with the waitress in Grease.

Yes. It wasn't Grease. It as a bastardized racially-appropriated copy of Grease. It's what you get when people do't know how to create anything original, so they steal and replace.

I didn't even know it was released. Hopefully this trend continues and the infinite streaming services with their infinite original slop fests are significantly drawn down.

Between streaming services cutting their budgets significantly and dozens of blockbuster flops in the last 3 years I think we could be heading into an industry crash. God, one could fricking hope. It'd be good if people decide to make movies that are good again afterwards.

The list of shows that only exist because of piracy is growing fast. They don’t even sell these shows. They’re just /gone/.

    > In June 2023, the series was canceled after one season, and has been permanently removed from Paramount+ due to a tax writeoff made on the show
What does that even mean? They wrote this show to get tax credits and then canceled?

      >What does that even mean? They wrote this show to get tax credits and then canceled?
Naaaaw. No way Hollywood would purposefully make something bad because they could make more money due to a flop than a success due to accounting scams.

      >need to make shows for streaming so people will subscribe
      >finding investors for a show is hard because the entire pre-production/filming/post-production period is a black hole that returns 0 profits, so it might be over a year before you get one cent back
      >tax deductions and credits are provided by the government to defer the burden until after the show is released and making money
      >post-release, you have to start paying taxes on the profits AND the estimated value of owning the rights to the show
      >if your show is a success, no one cares, you're printing money with this show for decades and it pays for itself
      >if your show is a failure, no one cares, you still made a little money off of it because some small number of people are watching it and the estimated value for a flop is lower (so there's less tax burden to keep the rights)

What happened here is the most extreme form of the second case: it was such a big failure that the accountants determined "burn all copies and make 0 profit and pay 0 tax because burning it made it a total loss" is better than "keep it online and make $1 profit and pay more than that in property taxes on the rights to this bullshit show no one is watching".

tl;dr they don't write these shows to pull of a tax scam and profit, but destroying the show is a failsafe in the tax code that lets them make bad shows at no risk

Who the frick wanted another grease anything in 2023?

God damn boomers are like a king that refuses to give up power to his sons. He is old, senile, clearly can't lead for shit and thinks things he did 50 years ago still work now.

This is sadly not the first remake or sequel. This is yet another well they keep going back to for some fricking bizarre reason. I remember that time they tried to make it into an edgy scifi show

Why don't you make your new movies? Your generation doesn't worth shit, that's why.

Things are not going to get better till boomers die. It's literally that simple. A boomer old woman wished death threats on me in Facebook when I suggested her small knitting store from her home town that was there since she was a kid went out of business because habits and preferences changed and she went on a rant that it's my gen's fault that things are changing that towns and tv are different now. Boomers legit can't handle a society not catering to them. So we get shit like a Grease remake or a Wizard of Oz remake as other anons said.

This could have been a good show if it wasn't about fighting racial oppression and women's equality. In Grease the girl gang were just bawds that sang about boys.
