An opinion that exists only in modern era, spawned by those who want to make apologies for bad media who shits of iconic characters.

That capeshit lore came decades after, by a writer that didn't create the character. It is a retcon, for a remake of the character, even.

        Anonymous

It was an S for the longest time, meant Superman. Then they retconned it for the first time in Reeve's Superman as the kryptonian writing for Hope. But until then, since the '30s, it meant Superman.

1930s Superman only fought against local crime bosses. Lower mob business. They weren't aiming for the stars yet.

Before the Christopher Reeve movie, it wasn’t a kryptonian symbol. Jor-El wore a costume with a yellow sun on it. The suit was designed and created by Ma Kent.
Actually, even after the Reeve movie, this design for Jor-El and the symbol origin was kept in the comics until the 1985 Man of Steel miniseries. In that, the symbol was a Native American symbol, taken from a local tribe. Comics wouldn’t canonize the kryptonians origin of the symbol until the 2000s, with the comic Birthright.

I always liked that look for Jor-El because it shows that he was already studying the sun and how it could give Superman powers.

The "S" here work because in the comic this version of Superman had pretty much abandoned his humanity after the death of Lois Lane. So this "S" looking very weird and alien-like made sense.
The black colors also showed that this was an older and darker Superman, which combined with the new weird looking "S" gave an odd feeling.

This "S" for a young Superman is just a weird choice, unless the new take is all about this Superman feeling more connected to his alien origin, which i doubt is Gunn's take.

        Anonymous

It gives you some grim vibes, it's all angles, no emotion or warmt comes from that look. Also the black is because he's still mourning Louis. Like you said, weird choice, specially with so many redesigns out there that don't look like ass. IIRC picrel is from the aborted JJ movie.

Just do it these characters are famous enough to ditch presentations, or used to be at least

Same thing they tried with BvS. HAMFISTING!

BVS has way bigger problems than not presenting it's characters. In fact, he's the main reason companies are afraid of not doing origin movies, because they can't understand why the public didn't like it so they jump to "we need to show the origin everyone already knows". I believe it is possible to make a straight Justice League movie without individual movies, just give it to anyone but Snyder.

Reminder that Zack Snyder originally wanted BvS to be a two-parter. The first movie was going to introduce this new old and weary Batman and the second would be what BvS ended up being.
            Warner Bros told him no.

Then Zack Snyder asked for them to first make individual movies for the Justice League characters, and even went as far as funding part of Wonder Woman budget with his own money.
Warner Bros told him no, and only made Wonder Woman first.

This is why it took so long for BvS to release after MoS.

The Avengers was the worst thing that could happen to those DC movies.

What pisses me off more is that there was a plan to do a MoS prequel starring Russell Crowe that would take place in Krypton, and it would be pure sci-fi kino.
Christopher Nolan, David S. Goyer, and Crowe were hyped about it.

But the WB execs were against it and so the project later ended up being a low-budget Syfy show, and Goyer couldn't even reference MoS anymore. Even then got fricked in the ass by Geoff Johns during its second season.

It looks like a shitty sentai reject. Thank God they went with the red white & blue colours. Expertly timed for 9/11 happening, and patriotism being on the rise in the 2000s. Spidey became America's hero for 10 more years with that quick decision.

Once again that works because this Superman got mind-controlled for decades behaving as a hero while preparing the world to be taken for other aliens. Lois Lane died of cancer and he couldn't even realize. So when he finally was free everything hit him. He lost decades of his life, the love of his life, and basically changed as a man.
So the new uniform is him feeling that Superman as a hero died and that he is also mourning Lois Lane.

Grant Morrison was always coming up with the most bizarre logos for Superman. Never a good one.

if test audiences don't like the new logo, they can replace it with the old logo using CGI in post. All is not lost.
