Before the Christopher Reeve movie, it wasn’t a kryptonian symbol. Jor-El wore a costume with a yellow sun on it. The suit was designed and created by Ma Kent.
Actually, even after the Reeve movie, this design for Jor-El and the symbol origin was kept in the comics until the 1985 Man of Steel miniseries. In that, the symbol was a Native American symbol, taken from a local tribe. Comics wouldn’t canonize the kryptonians origin of the symbol until the 2000s, with the comic Birthright.
Comics always had shit ideas and writing. There's a reason why a mid like Alan Moore get's so much praise: He writes brass for a medium that consistently produces shit.
The "S" here work because in the comic this version of Superman had pretty much abandoned his humanity after the death of Lois Lane. So this "S" looking very weird and alien-like made sense.
The black colors also showed that this was an older and darker Superman, which combined with the new weird looking "S" gave an odd feeling.
This "S" for a young Superman is just a weird choice, unless the new take is all about this Superman feeling more connected to his alien origin, which i doubt is Gunn's take.
It gives you some grim vibes, it's all angles, no emotion or warmt comes from that look. Also the black is because he's still mourning Louis. Like you said, weird choice, specially with so many redesigns out there that don't look like ass. IIRC picrel is from the aborted JJ movie.

I remember reading an interview where he seemed salty they didn't use his character designs for the first film. I guess they let him to the intro for Spider-man 2 as a consolation.
It came out during a time when stuff like The Dark Knight was the ultimate superhero slop and every superhero movie had to be kinda edgy and dark, Raimi movies were seen as corny and campy, of course none of it worked because the target audience still loved those Raimi movies, legitimately unlike now where they love them as a joke as in "LOL dis crazy!" and "le back to formula"

It looks like a shitty sentai reject. Thank God they went with the red white & blue colours. Expertly timed for 9/11 happening, and patriotism being on the rise in the 2000s. Spidey became America's hero for 10 more years with that quick decision.

Lois Lane died of cancer and he couldn't even realize. So when he finally was free everything hit him. He lost decades of his life, the love of his life, and basically changed as a man.
So the new uniform is him feeling that Superman as a hero died and that he is also mourning Lois Lane.
