The most confusing part to me is that they told everyone they were the plant, and then they tasked them all with finding the plant. Sam really was on some Weinstein shit this entire season. He mentioned how he wanted a good ending, to make the viewers feel like they haven't just watched 6 weeks of nihilism inducing garbage, but he couldn't even manage that.
Losing half of the contestants so early on fricked up their whole plan for the Initiative Group subplot they had cooking. Apparently, Sam also said it was probably too dark anyway. Who knows? He's probably dejected with the way it all turned out and just wanted to get it all over with, hence the abrupt ending and no day 42.
