It was better than Coraline.
I should really rewatch Coraline to compare, but at least I think the themes and morals in this were certainly stronger. But also that Coraline will remain the more well known beloved classic out of the two, and this will play second fiddle as “something to watch if you liked Coraline.”
This is a great movie, but Coraline was better. It's not that Coraline was "simpler" it's that it was laser-precise to get into your head, dredging up childhood fantasies and fears. Move to a new home, there's a secret room, on the other side is a "better" world that's got a rotten core and the whole thing turns evil. It's just easier to get into.

I think Coraline's story is structured better. But I like the design and personality of the MC in this one better than Coraline. Coraline felt way too mean to characters like Wyb, meanwhile even though Kat has more than enough reason to be b***hy as well, she's just rough around the edges and not trying to be mean.
Now that I think about it I liked all the designs in the movie more than Coraline. They were fun.

I just seen the movie. I really liked it. The ending felt a little rush. I thought the animal that does stuff was interesting that it didn't belong to the main protagonist. I like that the mean girl went against her parents. It was interesting they tackle the private prison position.
Coraline is still my favorite. I think it might be nostalgia but I felt everything in Coraline just flowed better.
Better animation, sure, but Wendell and Wild is just a complete mess in terms of characters, setting, and story. Coraline on the other hand draws from a popular children's novel and arguably manages to improve on some aspects.
Its a mess. Damn shame Peele has to obsessively shove some kind of political angle into everything he does now because honestly removing the generic evil corporation plotline would free up the runtime to focus on the films actual strengths- interpersonal character relations. Its a 6/10 at best, which is a damn shame because you could’ve easily tightened up the script and cut out half the characters and not really lost anything.
Remove the troony, remove the klax korp bullshit, remove the nun and the janitor, rewrite the story to focus solely on Kat trying to heal from her trauma and make her second chance work, and tie that in better with Wendell and Wild’s own familial issues and you’d easily have a more solid film.
As it stands its a messy ass film that tries to shove too much in too little of a runtime. oh yeah, and the reused animation to pad out the runtime doesn’t help it much either.

For a good portion of it, I was worried that they were juggling too many characters and subplots, but it really came together well. Only one that didn’t really land for me was that Manberg guy. I didn’t really get what his deal was, and there was this implication that he and Sister Helley had this whole history together that was important to the story and lore, but which I didn’t really find interesting.
Also, the setup to the whole thing was that it was supposed to be about a girl and her two demons, but in the end Kat really doesn’t interact with Wendell and Wild a whole lot, and that was a little disappointing.
But other than that it was overall pretty good. The animation in many scenes made for lots of really cute moments throughout, I liked the theme dealing with trauma, and I was surprised and impressed that the main conflict was a criticism of the privatized prison system, and that it explains the issue simply in a way that children can understand. Also I want to frick the latinx pussy boi.

On an unrelated note, I think it was a poor design choice to punch holes right on top of her nostrils instead of beneath.
She is a child, and up until it was expressly pointed out to her that her parents are shitty and she started thinking for herself and really looking into it, she probably bought into the old scam that “company store credit is just as good as, if not better, than real money! :^D” She could have known that her parents’ employees and staff get paid in monopoly money, but not previously known that that was a bad thing, or why.
I'm on Team "It's a damn good movie" but to be fair I'll agree that it could have benefitted from a scene showing Siobahn STARTING to do her own research, a few scenes before she confronts her parents. As it stands it went from Siobahn hearing from Kat "prisons are bad" then Siobahn giving a mini-dissertation on why. Bit bumpy.

A scene of her Looking out a window at the town library and looking like she's decided to go do research would've been enough. Could've even thrown in Kat's words replaying in Siobahn's head to drive home that Kat got the ball rolling. Like I said, it's not a major flaw or anything, just something that could've been smoother.

Movie looks nice but the script is a fricking mess. I'm not even talking about the pol shit, I mean the fact that the film throws a lot of lore with no time to digest it, followed by a confused narrative with like 5 different antagonists
I have a feeling that this is a result of it being written as a book first, though a quick google search tells me that the book wasn’t actually published, so I guess we can’t read it to know for sure. But I spent a lot of the time watching assuming that this wast an adaptation of the first book in a whole YA short novel series, and that that’s why they very quickly just blow past some details.
It definitely could have been a lot tighter and simpler if they just trimmed some characters.

Hey, those zombies were fun. It helped that they were mute and were really more like props than characters.
Although their role in the plot was very silly and cartoony in a “well there’s nothing in the rules that says a dog /can’t/ play basketball!” kind of way. The council just immediately accepts their resurrection and then completely gives up trying to resist them. Even with it being a cartoon that calls for a suspension of disbelief, it’s asking a lot.

In W & W it's pretty much just the Klaxons, with Bests getting dragged into villainy because he's orbiting them. Beezle does a little because he's trying to get his boys back, but not much.

You forgot Kat murdering her parents, the nun deliberately exposing students to sentient demonic artifacts to give them demon powers and then not explaining those powers until they're fricking cursed to serve demons and also working with the janitor to kidnap demons, the janitor kidnapping demons, the bear marking hellmaidens against their will, and W&W trying to kidnap/murder people repeatedly to get their park and literally only betraying the villains because their money wasn't good.
Oh, and Raul rough drafting a plan to spray paint his mom's breasts across the town's roofs before deciding maybe he should cover that shit with a necklace. And graverobbing. And reviving Kat's parents against their will for no reason. And trying to murder Siobhan with that brick.
A lot of that is just a list of characters committing crimes. I guess it serves your point that the script is convoluted, but you should probably know that doing bad things like crimes isn’t what makes a character an antagonist. They actually have to have some form of conflict with the protagonist.

It was really just one chick and two cardboard cutout henchwomen. You could have cut one or both of Shivahn’s (or however the hell you spell it) friends and it would only serve to make more sense why she was so desperate to make friends with Kat and so disappointed she had had a falling out with Raul.
I will say though that the short asian friend- I think her name was even Sweetie- was the cutest character in the film, so I don’t mind her being there.

This was a weird example where the MC was way b***hier and meaner than the 'Bully' group. They were sweet as frick, honestly why am I supposed to root for the b***h MC when she was selfish and pissy compared to the 3 side-characters that were way more likeable?
I was hesitant to watch because I've found stop-motion animated films aimed at older audiences to be kind of try hard on the adult humour and weak on story unless it's something like Anomalisa.

It honestly didn't need the PG-13 rating, it's much more goofy leaning with some darker subject matter and moments tossed in. Story is a bit clustered though, they're trying to tell a lot in a short amount of time. I'm not really sure what they could have cut though, an anon in a previous thread put it well saying it felt like it was originally meant to be a mini series and got condensed into an hour and thirty minutes.

Basically the casual use of hell/demon/death imagery, Father Bests's murder, and Wendell & Wild tripping balls on the hair cream as well as saying, "ass." I think Kat threw in one "damn" somewhere.
Mostly inoffensive compared to LAIKA's films, but still mature enough to earn that PG-13 rating.

When Wild said it "tickled his tummy" I assumed it was just a cartoonish thing for a goofy numbskull to do, so I loved the reveal that it was a more mature joke in nature. Totally set the tone for me, the two of them on screen were always a highlight

They made it that choppy BECAUSE they couldn't afford something else anon. CG Render time is money.
I think the animation looks fine since it's still plenty expressive and works well for a cast of characters who are all supposed to look like tiny Japanese trinkets brought to life. My only real issue is with the main girl's design, the face in particular. Seeing the more appealing concept art doesn't help.

It really felt like they weren’t actually targeting adults. The demons even say “the souls of the danged” instead of “damned” when talking about dead people in Hell (which I think they also call “The Underworld” or “The Land of the Dead,” and not even Hell). These choices might be purposeful for humor or lore reasons, but I think it’s more likely they were just meant to make the movie more kid friendly. I doubt many parents will actually give a shit that it’s pg 13, and I think that the rating was a last minute decision.
Weirdly enough, Kat does say “damn” at one point, and as an expletive too, not in the biblical sense.

Really the whole movie was just a mess and all over the place. I really hated the style actually. The fun of stop motion is that it's 3D, yet a lot of the models and animation where 2D. It made lot of shots and moments very awkward when they need to do make just about any kind of motion as you can tell that part of their faces aren't missing or seem to magically apear.
Even though I think the movie is generally kid friendly, I also think the PG13 rating was ultimately over more than just the trans character. There are a few things besides just that that would make quite a lot of certain kinds of very vocal parents very uncomfortable, as well as probably the MPAA. The movie fricks around with religious themes that actual christians might not take kindly to, they drop just a few little swears, a little sideboobage, and quite a lot of people explicitly die. One scene has a man bonked in the head with a golf club and then shoved into a lake to drown, and we later see his funeral and his corpse. That’s pretty rough for a kids’ movie. But then the trans kid is the cherry on top.

Btw, I actually do have a personal anecdote. In highschool I was the T. A for a teacher in charge of yearbook, which meant I put away chairs after school assembly and passed out I. D cards. Anyways one day I'm going around passing I. D cards to classroom the names were written on the back so I didn't really look at the pictures, I remember being confused by a senior girl because I didn't remember anybody new coming to school late in the year. Turns out it was a transgender student who had his named to her (I don't actually remember the name before or after)

Zombies aren't particularly effective horror creatures to begin with. Other than "Corpse gross," the only element of fear they contribute is when their condition is contagious, and they're usually too slow and weak to properly carry that threat to begin with. You'd have to be totally surrounded and defenseless to be in a situation where they're threatening. Rabid animals are scarier than zombies.
Now that you mention it, that deadnaming scene does feel unnecessary once you realize Siobhan isn't a mean girl after all. I guess it shows she can be oblivious, but she was always a good person, albeit one with no sense of boundaries. Maybe we're reading into it and it was just a way to give the film a more realistic vibe with an accidental microaggression.

You're never supposed to think she's being mean, it's clear from the start that she's well-intentioned but blind.
Well, the thing is it could be "Oh-- sorry!!! I-I keep forgetting" or "Oh SORRY. I keep F O R G E T T I N G" you know.
What's weird about that is that the delivery is so flat (clearly an issue with the voice actress in general) than you can interpret it both as a real apology or a mock apology. And the scene is staged so neutrally in terms of animation that you don't quite get a clue there either (the other girls just literally stand around without a change of expression). So I honestly don't know if that was really CLEVER writing, in which you don't get what to think handed to you, or just generally bad filmmaking.
The general writing style for the movie and the fact that nothing much comes out of that girl as a character except for functional stuff regarding the general plot makes me lean towards the latter.

Cinema Fantasma went through the effort of removing the seams in Frankelda and it looks way more handmade then any American stop motion project in the last decade.
Well they deliberately left them in, I didn't mean to claim they forgot or anything. It's just that I think the models would look nicer without; doing this frame took like 15 seconds for example.
I thin Dragon or whatever they use has built-in tools to automatize it too.

Deliberately sabotaging a brewery so it burns down and kills everyone inside as well as proceeding to try and demolish an entire town in order to build a prison is bad. Their plan to make the school's programs worse in order to ensure that they had a surplus of new prisoners was also pretty fricked.
I absolutely adore the atmosphere and aesthetic, maybe even more than Sellick's previous films. But the structure is complete fricking ass.
I'm not sure why they needed to imply some far-reaching lore about this group of hell maidens, and have that conspiracy about the prison industrial complex, both of which feel like they warranted a mini-series, when a very simple story setup of Kat finding some generic cursed book of incantations and summoning trickster demons would've served the same purpose without the bloat and resonated way stronger emotionally since the film wouldn't constantly need to cut away to 5 gorillion other elements.

I enjoy it but it felt like a simple movie for kids.
Yeah, it could've just as easily stayed fully family-friendly, but I appreciate that it's still got some edge. That tends to be the case with stop-motion features.
It was okay, but misadvertized. It felt very awkward with the whole "save the town" plot being the bigger conflict when you have zombies and demons from hell involved. Plus I was left craving for more of the creepy moments that were there. But I can't deny the animation and design are a treat.
Somehow despite the messy plot, underdeveloped character relationships, diversity checklist cast that feels like it came from a /misc/ shitpost, and comically overbearing (yet somehow also underdeveloped) messages, it still managed to be a pretty good and charming time.

Laika pushed Selick away after Coraline and turned down finishing Shadow King. Almost certainly because with Laika having originated from Nike Boy taking over Will Vinton Studios, he didn't want to deal with getting mogged by another stop motion legend for an extended period of time.
This was most likely exactly what happened. Laika is basically a multi-million Nike-funded ego playroom for the guy.
The original developer and director for Kubo (did a hybrid show for Netflix a while ago) recently published a basic overview how the project was taken from him mid-production with Knight taking over and not even changing much for the final product.
The title of his rap album from what when THAT was his corporate-funded hobby will never cease to make me smile.
Laika already announced their next project with full cast, poster and release year.

This hits a lot of what I felt. If nothing else, hopefully there will be a lot of imaginative art that comes out of this to fill the lack of substance the film had.

So is the writing. Also the voice acting sucks, the characters mumble and rush through their lines a lot. Even with subtitles it's irritating. I quit watching 3/4 the way through. I don't give a shit what happens. The main character is that unlikable. 3/10 wouldn't recommend

The literal first thing to go through my head was Orochi vs Susanoo. I'm aware of no Mesoamerican serpent slaying myths. As far as I'm aware they held their dragons in high regard. And it didn't exactly look like Saint George. Cetus only had one head. I was focused on the content. It being a half-naked Mesoamerican chick really didn't factor in much cause other than the macahuitl I couldn't even tell anything about it was supposed to be fricking Mesoamerican. The picture was introduced before Raul's mother and at the time I was operating under the assumption that the figure was supposed to be the fricking Native American government worker from the beginning and Raul just gave her a macahuitl because why the frick not?

I just finished watching it. Animation was great, pacing was off-kilter, the ending petered off like the movie ran out of budget and couldn't finish proper.
Kat's line delivery is awkward, for being the eponymous characters, Wendell and Wild have such a weak and superfluous presence, and Raul's part in the film felt so out-of-place when a few changes could have fixed that.
The first 2/3s of the movie were good and actually cool, until the last 20 minutes where it unironically becomes
"We have to stop the evil bulldozers from destroying our town to build a mini mall or Prison, quick throw snowballs at the zombies".

Gotta say I love how this went the opposite direction of Laika. By the time Kubo and Missing Link came around, a lot of the time it was impossible to tell if you were looking at stop motion or cgi. It could be neat, but something was lost. With this, it felt more blatantly stop motion throughout. The power of a good director.

Frick the plot. It was a gigantic waste of space and time. Frick's sake Siobhan existing to rat out her parents basically made the character being psychic irrelevant, so the plot actively mooted the main character's fricking development. I've no fricking idea how you frick up your story that badly.

I mean frick's sake they didn't even need the zombie witnesses to take down the parents because they ordered their workers to kill protesters in front of protesters, media, and the governor. The main character was more or less incidental to the whole damn plot other than killing her parents which led to the memorial where all the brewery workers could be killed, which probably could have just been done on a day of the week ending in -y, and summoning the demons, which their father demonstrates was completely unnecessary.
Let's go over the conflict and resolution assuming no MC.

>They find out about demon zombies because demons came to earth (doesn't require MC)
>They hire the demons to resurrect the old guard
>Old guard vote to demolish the town
>Their popular daughter gathers a bunch of friends/allies to protest her parents

>Parents go to jail for multiple counts of attempted murder

Wendell and Wild are almost as fricking pointless seeing as they only really serve as a vehicle for getting the cream into the service of the Klaxons. How in the frick are the protagonist and the titular deuteragonists the least important parts of your fricking film?

It would've been nice if the psychic stuff ended up being more useful, but in the end the purpose of that was that she got a generic "You're The Chosen One Buffy... I Mean Kat" package of powers... which she ignored in the minute after using them to make a deal with bumbling demons waving around hair cream. She didn't want any part of the "Hellmaiden" nonsense, she just wanted her parents. If psychic powers let her contact some demons for a deal, score, but beyond that she didn't give a frick.
Also the other Hell maiden has a powers to travel by black goo, but it didn't help one time during the movie.
It's a Buffy-style "You're the Chosen One to Hunt Demons" package, given to people with no interest in hunting demons.
I seriously expected this to be the plot, the demons had an idea that they literally said would have people lining up, the town had a problem with a lack of jobs, HOW was the resolution not "demons build theme park on town and help revitalize it"?
Hell, they could have tied it up with the theme of closure by having the money be real and have them offer the money to the MC to rebuild the brewery but they meet in the middle and they have charity events at the new theme park like his dad used to have for the library.

I get the feeling Selick didn’t know what to do with the parents after they were revived, which is kiiind of an issue when that was THE driving force behind Kat’s actions. Beautiful movie, but that script is all over the place.
The parents could have had dead people joke like the priest eyeball or something. I think they're just slow and that's as far as being dead goes.
They've only been dead for five years. It made sense for them to be mostly put together. Plus, any zombie jokes with them might've killed the emotional impact with their scenes. The undead council members were just plot devices, so the filmmakers were free to have some fun with them.
The most obvious and healthy use for the parent characters would have been to not bring them back to life at all. For example Kat makes peace with not being able to get closure in that extreme and clumsy fashion, and makes the choice of using a critical amount of remaining cream to revive the brewery workers who can be witnesses to prosecute Karen and Black Trump and save the day

The movie feels like it was written around a bunch of progressive talking points. The ironic thing is it's actually handled well, but there's just too many different talking points that the story becomes unwieldy. It's in dire need of judicious story editing, but they didn't want to drop any of their pet causes. For something with so many ideas, it needed to make the commentary pithy and whimsical. It's a British specialty, but not something we're good at.
On the plus side, this movie feels more like a true spiritual successor to Coraline than any of the other Laika films, and illustrates clearly why Coraline is their only real hit.
I wouldn't have much of a problem with that, but the movie doesn't feel written "around" the themes, they really feel forced as attention-grabbing seasoning on top of a very simple framework. Most people talking about how "unwieldy" the story is risk ending up making that sort of a compliment, just how people used to mock stuff like Subnormality comics because of their verbosity but the author and the fans interpreted it as an intellectual plus and doubled down on it, instead of acknowledging the possibility of it being a sign of ineffective storytelling.
The story in this thing is ridiculously simple, but the peppering of topical, attention-grabbing themes and quirks scatters whatever little there is for an audience to actually latch onto in terms of memorable characterization or story.

I think the main issue is that the story is a true ensemble but the movie can't be - the story itself isn't about Kat but about the town and the people in it. In a more drawn out telling of the story you'd have much longer segments from each vantage point and the different themes and events would be able to drive the character's actions naturally.
As it is the movie rushes through what should be its connective tissue in order to fit all the major beats in.

It's the Catholic school clinging to life after the whole town packed up and moved. That's kinda the whole point of why Father Bests was desperate enough to work with Lex Luthor, there was almost nobody left in town, and nobody with money they were willing to give him.

It was weird how they kept flipflopping between him being a reluctant villain to save his school or actively malicious himself and then he just dies a second time and no one gives a shit. The school wasn't really portrayed as a bad place to go, and he didn't really mistreat the students either. It'd be one thing to treat him as a true villain if the school was particularly shitty but it wasn't and the students even seemed to like him.
There's kind of a moral there though. If you ally yourself with evil, it's not going to matter if you were a "reluctant villain" or straight-out-evil yourself, and nobody'll give a frick when you die.

If you think the villain plot to guarantee more child prisoners was heavy handed or too in your face you're either not an American or you're just a bit sheltered because that was an actual real scandal and it still isn't fully resolved. We busted someone just a few years ago for literally selling minors to bigger prisons that wanted the labor and funding. We still didn't create any laws or policies to keep it from continuing, and there's still no effort to reinvestigate the huge number of young inmates around the country who were probably locked up on flimsy pretenses to begin with, shit is insane. Why is this one of the very few movies where that's talked about, when it's been a major issue for years?

I could be VERY wrong, but the Klaxons felt more like a nod to the puppets of Spitting Image. Boris Johnson happens to be the most recognizable Spitting Image figure in recent years, so it ended up being Boris.
Even with one of them being black, the image of a ibdigenous brown aztec warrior woman fighting a blonde snake with blue eyes give off the impression of what they are meant to represent to the viewers

I think a Coraline/Kat relationship would look like Kat being the edgy aloof upperclassman, and Coraline at best would be a dweeby suckup kid that looks up to her.
Kat is a hardened juvie kid who has committed actual crimes, and Coraline is a slightly quirky suburbanite from a stable home. They’re from completely different worlds. Not that that means it couldn’t work.
Kat's all talk. She achieved damn little herself. Coraline took out the Beldam. If Kat tried to push around Coraline like she did Raul, Coraline would stand up for herself.
Strictly speaking she achieved nothing herself. Even her attempt at demon summoning ended up with Wendell and Wild coming to the surface on their own like their dad because the tunnel collapsed.
Raul revived her parents. She didn't have anything to do with stopping Wendell an Wild's Dad. Siobhan discovered the plan to destroy the town and she was only mildly involved in the final fight (she pulled a lever at Helley's direction which arguably wasn't necessary because Wendell and Wild were capable of stopping another bulldozer and helped turn that one).
So yeah, completely useless.

It's a memento from her late father and she specifically brings up keeping it to him so, yes, it's a pretty important item.
From a fanart perspective though, it gets repetitive when half the art is people going "I'll draw the boombox scene!" It's a good scene, but there's other good scenes to reference.

I just don't understand why Best's head ended up in his stomach when he died by drowning.
They popped his clogs pretty hard before they dumped him in the pond, so maybe they broke his spine. Or maybe he was contorted into a weird position underwater when rigor mortis set in.
It's a cartoony head cave in effect like from tom and jerry. He was hit over the head with a golf club.
This film was a mess. They crammed in way too many plot threads in and nothing had a chance to breathe. The main character wasn't likeable and her friend had no character arc at all. Then at the end, everything gets resolved in 1 second because of the mural.

Yes...? What, you wanted a tour of the prisons? The villains literally confess "yup, they're shit prisons that you never really leave for long, we make tons of cash, and we're trying to ensure that the next generation march straight in there too!" That's pretty much all the explanation needed for why the prison's a bad thing.
Perhaps you're just dumb? It made perfect sense to me. Klax Corp wanted to build private prisons in Rust Bank. We got a whole scene with Siobahn spelling out why the Klax Corp prisons are bad. The Elliots went "Nope" and had the clout to hold it off with their brewery. Then the Elliots died and the brewery burned down, so the only thing holding back the prison development was a handful of city council members that got outvoted because there's nothing in the town charter that says zombies can't vote.
Your missing the point. It could have been to build a shopping mall, it could have been a polluting factory. It was just a maguffin and that's all it needed to be.
By forcing in an under-developed "private prisons BAD" message and hammering the audience over the head with it, it just made a film with poorly developed characters and way too many plot elements, even more bloated

You do realize that if you asked someone to predict whether beating up 6 zombies on bulldozers or convincing the mountain sized demon and father of the titular characters to go in peace with a mural projected across the town from the highest spot in the city while returning his kidnapped family to him where one of the main characters in a scene that ends with the death of one of the main cast is the climax of the plot, everyone and their brother that hasn't seen the film is going to say the latter, right?

Wendell and Wild and her dad's shitty driving wrecked her family, unless she's that busted up against losing the brewery without knowing it.

Now that you point it out, that's a pretty big misstep. The hero never has a face-to-face confrontation with the villains? The villains aren't even aware of who the threat to their plot is?
Should have made room for that instead of following the generational trauma trend by squeezing in the scared father, rebellious and unloved sons subplot.
I didn’t notice it while watching the film, but I actually kinda like it, now that I’m thinking about it. It’s sorta relatable in a way, that the big bad villains are the heads of this powerful corporation, and the MC never sees them, because corporate heads are usually pretty untouchable to common people, and they have to be defeated by dismantling their systems rather than face to face.
I don't see the need for it. They're the shit of the world, there's nothing that can be added by putting in a scene with them meeting. Kat would point out they're shit, they'd get angry and say she'll be sorry, blah blah blah, in the end what matters is they were defeated. The important stuff was her being able to show her parents what'll happen to Rust Bank when they're gone.

Dunno about the trailer but the original version of the scene only had a singleheaded worm and involved an oncoming car that the dad swerved to avoid instead of a turn in the bridge.
Could only find a trailer with the flashback silhouette scene. And in that the worm does look like W&W.
That strikes me more as foreshadowing of "two horrible things" in her future, not as a rewrite.

The film makers were clearly going for a very specific kind of tragic accident. But they couldn’t make the reason for the crash be the dad swerving so that he wouldn’t hit a puppy in the middle of the bridge, because then it would be too much like Beetlejuice. So they had to improvise, and this is what they came up with.
It’s not that complicated, and the important thing is that all of the characters recognize the incident as an unfortunate freak accident (except for when Kat blames herself). You can blame the dad all you want, but the role he played in the matter is really not important within the story itself.

Kat's entire story arc is overcoming trauma stemming from her parents' deaths. Him taking responsibility as the adult and driver in the situation instead of just saying she's not responsible because she was a kid is reprehensible.
I've got a half second cousin once removed (I think the math's right on that?) that was in a wreck with their parent as a toddler and the parent always did that bullshit where they subtlety shifted the blame and then used their son's age to negate it and it SERIOUSLY fricked their kid up. The animation went over-the-top in depicting the worm, but at the end of the day it was just a worm that made her scream that made her dad crash because the weather was shitty and they were on a bridge. If you don't want stuff like heavily stylized horror-worms, stay away from stylized animation. Maybe just watch, I dunno, Pantheon or something that keeps the animation as plain as possible.

Yeah the 2 headed worm really felt like it was supposed to be a connection to Wendell and Wild, but I guess it wasn't? I'm pretty sure they were using fake names for shit and drawing from popular wrong conceptions of shit in order to avoid stepping on toes. Poppets aren't exactly common knowledge and are used in practicing religion. They'd have called it a familiar if anything, but that term's ALSO used by wiccans so you run into the aforementioned toe stepping.
If they were trying to be completely inoffensive to anyone of any religion, I think they did a bad job. The lovable side kicks are demons and there’s an evil catholic priest.
Also if she retained a personal connection with them. Also if they actually showed up for her summon. Also if they actually revived her parents or ever did anything for her. Also if she ever did anything for them. The pact ended up amounting to fricking nothing beyond being an excuse to face her past, something you don't need a curse for a normal character to need to do.
