not even the 90's were lol
Though it aired in mostly the 90s Seinfeld even had an Abortion episode, an episode about gayness being fine. The only reason it felt less woke back then is because of the lack of widespread use of the internet and social media
>an episode about gayness being fine.
I think that episode may have gone over your head
No, the episode went over your head. It was the perfect take to make conversations of gayness tolerable to the general public. Because there were so many barriers of insecurity back then. The joke allowed one to proclaim they're not gay, while simultaneously proclaim they're not against gays either. In the 90s, everyone was pushing for "tolerance". And that's what the joke allowed for. Tolerance of gays. Nowadays, everything is about "acceptance", which is the next step after tolerance. It was actually a brilliant stepping stone in social acceptance. Because it was a step that everyone was glad to make.
You don't understand what woke is.
>Woke: Anything made past 2016 that conservatives don't like.
Seems to be the defining trait.
There woke movies from the 50's. It's just a new word for awkward progressive posturing.
woke is a word black twitter kweens invented in 2018 for their own views you stupid c**t
>woke is a word
That conservakiddies also use to label things they don't like. Definitions, especially slang, are liable to change from person to person. moron.
you are a parody of yourself
Your words are meaningless babble.
Project more, troony
Wrong, although I know it looks that way to people who never look beyond their media and Cinemaphile(or probably reddit/twitter in your case)
>Wrong
Nah. Some of you are capable of nuance, but enough of you fit the kneejerk "Is that a BLACK PERSON?!?! WOKE WOKE WOKE" mindset as you now engage in culture war antics. Your mention of reddit for no reason as if Cinemaphile isn't rife with whining about wokeism puts you in the kneejerk corner.
i don't even care about the silly over-representation any more. But white writers should give colored characters more dramatic depth, and not make every single one a yass slay qwawn paragon of justice defeating whitey. That's just using them as puppets.
I completely agree.
>enough of you fit the kneejerk "Is that a BLACK PERSON?!?! WOKE WOKE WOKE" mindset
This strawman only exists in your moron homosexual mind
>N-no one acts like that on MY wholesome christian egalitarian forum!
Be quiet.
No moron, it's true. You literally get mad at white characters existing. You have no right to complain.
>it's true
Anon. We both know you're lying, so this is pointless.
>y-you ge-
Nah. Some people do, though.
Why are you stuttering, b***h? Can't handle being called out on your lies and hypocrisy?
>W-w-why
You are boring.
I'm no 80s kid. I was born in 86. But I wasn't even a conscious person until like 1990. So I consider myself a 90s kid. And yes, the 90s were woke. You guys just weren't privy to what was going on back then. Ask yourself why every 90s children's show had a mix raced cast, and at least one disabled kid.
Sitcoms were addressing issues of homosexuality and even trannies. Which they called "transvestites" back then.
Rupaul found his fame in the 90s. His late surge of popularity in the 2010s was a *return*, not a start.
But also, when I was about 6-8 years old, I knew a black kid who was super into Star Trek The Next Generation. That was what he was known for. Liking Star Trek. We all thought he was weird. Nice. But strange for liking such a show. In retrospect, he was smart as frick. Got straight As in school too. He was a classic smart nerd.
But kid-me was being a hypocrite. Because I was a black nerd too. I just didn't realize it at the time. Because I liked playing outside like all the normal kids did. But my household was also really into video games. And we would invite the other neighborhood kids over to play video games. Since our neighborhood was mixed, we had a the older black kid who was good at everything. He didn't own any games, but he could beat all of them somehow. The ginger girl would bring Kickle Cubicle(NES game), the white boy would bring Legend of Zelda. We had a Korean girl who just spectated. And while my sister wasn't too much into video games, she would still hang out sometimes, along with her blonde friend.
So you might have a room filled with: black, asian, white, and we're pretty sure the Star Trek kid was gay. Nothing is guaranteed at such a young age, but he had a swishy way about him. Oh, and my mom babysat a disabled kid too. So she was there sometimes.
So yeah, on one hand, the media was absolutely woke back then. But on the other hand, it wasn't that far off from the realities of my life.
Not in the uk there were very few coloured and I can’t think of any cripples on tv shows
You guys didn't get Nickelodeon over there?
Rugrats
Hey Arnold
Alone in the Dark
All That
Legends of the Hidden Temple.
That other game show that eludes me right now. They would "slime" people.
Or how about other shoes like:
Captain Planet
Josie and the Pussy Cats(not a 90's show, but it aired in the 90s)
Recess
Ghostwriter
I think the Burger King Kids Club is a perfect example of what political correctness was like in the 90s.
This has been going on since Sesame Street premiered in the late '60s.
Yep, that's a good example of what I was attempting to describe. Also The Magic School Bus.
Yeah, well no one said the 90s invented this formula. Only that it existed. Which some anons don't know.
somebody post the shareblue version
thanks, mon.
I think largely it's presentation. This was always present even in old Star Trek had "woke" shit. I think the difference now depending on your definition or tolerance of "woke" is that older shows and movies didn't make it the narrative of the product. You had the Cosby's but every episode wasn't "this is what it means to be black in America" kind of unlike Blackish where most episodes are framed around Dre making sure his kids have some kind of "black" identity or knowing their roots, or old Power Man or hero for Hire comics vs Netflix's Luke Cage that has him sitting in a barber shop for a quarter of an episode giving a lecture to some punk about Marcus Garvey. So many shows and movies now, this being my definition of woke, forget about or betray character or story progression to preach about some social issue that's taking place right now in a one to one context. Making the show kinda shit. Because they do very little to make the show enjoyable. Because it seems that between making a quality show and pushing an agenda the latter dominates most of the time. Once again with Luke Cage whose signature look is a yellow shirt gets replaced by a black hoodie the entire first season.
You're right that the concepts have always been there but the execution, now, is extremely different. And I think the intent now, is extremely different.
But that's not Stranger Things. There's hardly any lecturing. Even the lesbian just hangs out with Steve and they bond over chicks.
She has a whole scene complaining about miss soggy knee to the asylum director
Yea but, that's me, my definition. So I guess I would agree. The show isn't that woke to me but I'm not inclined to force my guidelines on others though. In reference to the original post it's more about the actual 80's vs the show and to that, considering they're in some small out of the way town, not that you can speak for one hundred percent of people but their attitudes towards a lot of stuff seems fairly liberal. In a not that no one would accept some of this but the lack of just casual intolerance in the background is weird in comparison. Even the shit this season with DnD,witchcrafts, cult shit is neutered into just calling them freaks. Bullying is really toned down. It's not the focus of the show to me so I don't care that much and didn't give it much thought but no the actual 80's weren't that woke. And it's not they'd drag the lesbian out into the streets and stone her or anything but just like even Steve doesn't casually say dyke while still being her friend because who cares?
It was more organic , then it felt like Levar burton or Danny Glover got on a show or film because their acting ability. Now it feels like they are just a check next to a box
You guys were just ignorant to the back door decisions. But people who saw it for what it was called it out. They recognized it "tokenism". A lot of black characters got their roles, because some meddling executives thought "we need a black guy". Or they thought, "black guy / white guy buddy movies would be funny. Two different people from two different worlds." They didn't just write a generic buddy film, and then by happenstance cast black guy for the role because he was the best performer. No, they knew they wanted a black guy from the jump.
>I knew a black kid who was super into Star Trek The Next Generation. That was what he was known for. Liking Star Trek.
Here lies the core difference.
Huh? Difference between what and what?
How would that kid be treated today? As someone who likes star trek? Or as a stunning and brave diverse intersectional bipoc champion?
I mean, I guess kids today are relatively more chill about liking nerdy things, ever since nerdy things took over pop culture. But I don't think people would call him stunning and brave or whatever. Where did you get that idea?
making a deal about him liking star trek is almost the same thing, to be fair, it was just slightly less obnoxious
>I was a black nerd
You're a black Black person
Crackers seethe.
Im seething because I am not homosexual Erectus like you.
Not even the 2000's were
Not even early 00’s lol
Do you guys not remember "political correctness gone mad" and "culture wars" were 90s terms? It wasn’t as prominent as post-2015 but it was there.
There was a cultural backlash in some areas corresponding to the conservative culture and political power being pushed by the Reagan administration. Or something like that idk.
>There was a cultural backlash
yeah but not in the way the show potrays it. everyone back then just wanted to have straight sex before marriage and do drugs, nobody cared about gay rights or forcing companies to hire women to fill a quota.
>nobody cared about gay rights
Black person what, the aids crisis was one of the biggest cultural focal points of the decade
>Black person what, the aids crisis was one of the biggest cultural focal points of the decade
No it didn't. People only cared about HIV because people like Fauci lied and said anyone could get the virus and predicted a global epidemic. People did not care about gays and viewed it as their fault for fricking a monkey.
Fauci didn't lie. The people that say Fauci lied got their wish and had the ear of Thabo Mbecki as advisers on doing absolutely fricking nothing. Go and have a look at how that panned out.
He did lie. He said the sole cause of AIDS was a single point of viral infection with no health or lifestyle cofactors which is demonstably false. And he recommended a wienertail of drugs that killed everyone who took it.
>>nobody cared about gay rights
>Black person what, the aids crisis was one of the biggest cultural focal points of the decade
The HIV crisis set gay rights back 30 years. People didn't understand the disease or how it transmitted. Mothers wouldn't let gay anywhere near their kids incase they caught 'the gay plague'.
AIDS is a gay disease
Monkey Pox
it's GRIDS anon 🙂
time for a standard frick party
This. I remember in the old days here we'd make fun of gays by talking about GRIDS.
>Mothers wouldn't let gay anywhere near their kids incase they caught 'the gay plague'.
Well, they weren't too far off.
Literally everyone knew how it spread. If you had buttsex you might get aids. They just had to pretend otherwise causs the bisexual and drug addiction community brought it to straight people
Nearly impossible for straight guys to get it back then (and today). Straight women only had to worry if they fricked a guy who got jizzed in the butthole on the side. You just had to make sure your boyfriends weren't gays. Other than that not much worry.
Nobody really cared about gay rights up until like 2014.
Crazy to think that younger people will think that all this shit is normal, although it never was.
2014 is when the first trannies started to appear. Literally all the millennial's fault.
I think the general consensus is still negative towards all the freaks. People might be scared to say it out loud, but they laugh at them behind their backs.
>2014 is when the first trannies started to appear. Literally all the millennial's fault.
I think once Bruce Jenner trooned out (which, mind you, had been speculated for years prior), that's when you started to see a bunch of the modern nonsense associated with trannies. Before then, it was just crossdressers like Ru Paul, and like the only transgender person you would maybe occasionally hear about was Chaz Bono.
I don't remember there being such language police about trannies until 2014. The whole "trans women are women" and having to call them proper pronouns is a relatively new phenomenon. There have been trans people for a long time, but we used to be able to acknowledge that a chick has a dick and is a dude.
You guys are crazy. I remember being a kid in the mid 90s, and I walk into the living room where my dad's watching TV. And it's some talk show. I don't remember the show. But it was one of those Maury/ Ricki Lake/ Oprah kind of shows. In the episode, some homophobes are being confronted by gay people. And they're calling the gay people "gays", and the host is asking how does that make the them feel. And the homophobe is unrepentant. And the gay guy is expressing how much it hurts him.
Here, you can easily find video of old shows featuring drag queens and trannies back then. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gjg8tVfrxhs
Millenials are not the cause of conditioning, we're the result of conditioning.
Lol half of Cinemaphile wasn't born in these times, gay rights starting in 2014 is a crazy ass statement, it was going crazy especially in the 2000s, people just don't pay attention
yup, Cinemaphile is full of 9 year olds who don't know shit or 90 year olds who don't remember shit
Dumb frick, nobody said gays started in 2014. But nobody took homosexuals and troons seriously until ~2014 when internet shit started becoming more influential.
There was pride shit and talks about acceptence (not rights) etc but I remember them getting pelted by eggs and stuff. Nobody gave a shit.
Also funny that back then they often cited the slippery slope fallacy when conservatives said that it will all lead to further degeneracy. That has not aged very well.
You still put too much importance on 2014. We were already talking about gay rights before that point. And "pride shit" was discussed in the mainstream. Some egging incident doesn't change the cultural shift that was happening.
By the late 90s / early 00s, you could listen to Howard Stern talk to George Takai about his sexual exploits, and then switch to Loveline where they would give advance to gay callers, then catch an episode of Queer eye for the straight guy, before catching a rerun of that episode where Homer learns to accept a gay man.
But to hear you tell it, in 2014, someone at tumblr suddenly flicked a switch and everyone was magically accepting of gays.
Conservative culture was the backlash
And third wave 90s shit was the backlash to the backlash
at least some of you can see how the pendulum swings all the time.
It's just the left that wins anything ever
it's not a pendulum, it's a ratchet
>There was a cultural backlash in some areas corresponding to the conservative culture and political power being pushed by the Reagan administration.
Reaganite conservatism was the cultural backlash, it began in the 70's as a response to the riots/drug deaths/general social termoil of the hippie era and was in full swing by the 80's.
Being a leftist in the 80's was like being a conservative under obama.
80s were the beginning of wokeness and third wave feminism, a direct retaliation to the Reagan Era. It was also when schools began really pushing the black history shit
Obviously they weren't, the 80s were nothing like Stranger Things.
The 90s were not that woke but the thing was not to care what other people got up to.
Post 9/11 there was a sort of conservative backlash in terms of interfering and then woke is a backlash to that, which is progressive politics with interfering. 90s were the best really.
>Obviously they weren't, the 80s were nothing like Stranger Things.
Could have been worse. It's like a snapshot of the '80s filtered by the selected culture which survived from it it due to being protected by boomers. And as someone who was fully alive during the '80s I can say that as snapshots go it's not bad for something which isn't actually from the era. But sometimes it's really, inevitably, achingly modern despite insisting that we're watching a retro show, and honestly the thing which gives it away the most is that it's so incredibly derivative to the point of outright unapologetic theft.
>woke is a backlash to that
Nah.
Yes it was. It started on Tumblr by millennials whose life experience with Republicans in charge had been extremely negative (Bush years, 9/11 paranoia, anti Islam, Great Recession) and they popularized wokeness as a backlash
t. 90s nostalgiagay
Did 10 year old black girls play D&D?
no
>Did 10 year old black girls play D&D?
D&D was incredibly niche, people mostly played videogames and board games.
Yeah pretty positive the show portrays this bud, as everyone besides the main characters thinks D&D is some literal satanic demon cult.
I think you exaggerate, it had a period of being a bit of craze. The license had enough juice in it to push a toy line and obv. the cartoon later on.
D&D was popular in the late 70s/early 80s and then died down by the mid-80s. The Satanic Panic about D&D was fairly early on and the mid-80s Satanic Panic was actually about pedophiles in daycares.
Funnily enough, if Stranger Things went on another year or two than Lucas' sister's friend group would be playing TMNT&Other Strangeness, which completely supplanted D&D for the middle school crowd due to the comic being cool and ninja turtles being ok with born-agains.
>satanic panic
Did boomers really? Gone you Reagan era gays were weird. This is like grown adults believing in santa claus.
my mom wouldnt let me ride my bike that far in the mid-late 90s because she thought a pedophile satanist was gonna come outta nowhere and snatch my sweet ass
I remember someone drew a pentagram in wet concrete in my neighborhood and I thought people were having satanic rituals nearby. This would have been around 1989.
I had friends that weren't allowed to play with He-man toys because of Orko and the Sorceress.
D&D was always nerd shit for guys with acne and greasy hair that listened to Rush. It was like that in the mid to late '80s too. The only thing that really replaced it was Magic: The Gathering cards around 1992 or so. That was huge. Middle school and high school girls weren't into TMNT. Not sure what you are basing that on.
Satanic Panic was pretty big all through the '80s and lasted up until the '90s (watch Paradise Lost about the West Memphis Three. That was def Satanic Panic in the '90s) There was also the Marilyn Manson panic in the mid to late '90s. I definitely remember parents not letting kids listen to Motley Crue in the mid to late 80s because they were "satanic." I also remember there was a panic about subliminal messages in records all through the '80s.
I'm basing it on my own experience of my sister and her friends constantly trying to steal my TMNT toys to play with and pretty much every guy in my 4th and 5th grade high achievement class spending their lunch breaks rolling up TMNT characters. This transitioned into Rifts around '90 or so.
DnD was weapons grade pussy repellant until the 2000's
>DnD was weapons grade pussy repellant until the 2000's
It still is for all but the most stanky nerdpussy
Nah, it's actually very popular now
t. 21
Try and bring up any other TTRPG though
My friend's neighbor plays warhammer
D&D was a popular Saturday morning cartoon. That shit was popular
Was the toon even linked to the game very much?
With critical role and all the other shit its super popular , my cousin played dnd in the 80's ( way before I was born) and he was shocked to hear that not only women play in my group but moderately attractive ones...
a lot more blacks were into nerd things than now
there is a cute black girl at my job that asked me if i played magic the gathering.
she laugh at you behind your back
Its not an 80 show. It's a 2021 show that takes place in the 80s. The entire thing is a caricature of the 80s, absolutely no genuine love or appreciation for the era is shown
How would you make it more authentic. I was born post 9/11.
I dunno tel them to cut the modern mannerisms out. Maybe change the wardrobe so it doesn't look like 2022 kids going to an 80s themed party. I'm not getting paid their salaries so I'm not going to come up with how to do it better. I will just rightfully recognize it as poor. Domnt even dislike the show tbh it just has no reason to be 80s and isnt really anyways
We can tell
what a homosexual
The stripper I fricked on Friday didn't remember 9/11 because she was only 1 when the attack happened.
I have never felt older.
>frick a stripper
>somehow discuss 9/11 with her
Based
kek my thoughts too... interesting one
>I was born post 9/11.
what a bright future you have
Bullying of El would be a lot more subtle. They wouldn't fricking arrange a tightly choreographed skating circle and have the entire class laugh at her.
Have Mike dress in OP after getting to California. Really only their sports clothing was national before 1987.
Color monitor on Dustin's girlfriend's computer.
Nancy's outfits all need to have shoulderpads. For one thing, you wouldn't have even been able to buy blouses without pads in 86, for another she's the type of woman who absolutely would have had shoulderpads.
High school kids in the 80s were very much trying to appear adult. Even the nerdy freshmen would have stopped watching cartoons and buying toys. Having a jock say "I thought we were watching Thundercats" is insane.
Not enough denim.
The Hellfire club shirts would have been a single color and the logo would have been on the back of the shirt rather than the front. Multi-color shirt printing was expensive as frick. Unless they had them silk-screened, in which case the older members' shirts would be distressed as hell.
No one used fancy names for weed back then. It was just pot or weed.
That's just what I've got from watching the first two episodes.
Mike was dressing in knockoff OP. Can't remember when OP became a thing, but OP, Quicksilver, and Bodyglove surf clothes were a thing by 1988. Vision Street Wear too.
People called it "grass" or "dope" sometimes. But yeah mostly "pot" or "weed"
Don't think high school kids would watch Thundercats. More likely reruns of Facts of Life, Diffrent Strokes, or even the Brady Bunch
I'd say it started in '86 but like in summer of 86. Like nobody was wearing it and then suddenly everyone was in bermuda shorts. In my experience C&C Surf was first because their cartoon characters caught on with kids, then OP came next and stuck around until the early 90s.
Mike and Dustin would definitely be reading TMNT at this point as it was already a cult hit and didn't become "kiddy" until the cartoon in 1987.
>Having a jock say "I thought we were watching Thundercats" is insane.
That would have been a fantastic way to get called a queer by your buddies.
I would have have them say, what are you, 5?
chill. the first season was alright
everything after s1 was completely trash
The first three seasons had characters smoking cigarettes all the time. In this season the cop is in a gulag so it makes sense he doesn’t smoke but one of the teens begins to light a cigarette and another grabs it out of his mouth and yells “gross!” This was probably done because of parents complaining it made smoking look cool (even though it’s accurate to show more people of the era smoking). A few teens smoke weed but they’re are never shown directly doing so, it always cuts to them right after for comedic effect to make them look ridiculous
>This was probably done because of parents complaining it made smoking look cool
There was a pretty heavy anti-smoking campaign in the 80s. Public shaming is incredibly effective at stopping degenerate behavior. We stopped doing that (shaming in general) and people got fat, started smoking more, and even became more open about their drug use.
First season was as 80s as it could be. No woke shit.
As an oldster born in 1980, I think it's pretty accurate. I don't think lipstick lesbians were common until the '90s. There were lesbians in the '80s but they were like kd lang or Indigo Girls tier. Like jean jackets and mullets type lesbians. Black girls weren't into D&D games. The ones I knew wanted to start R&B bands and become the next Janet Jackson. Sometimes black boys would hang out with whites, but mostly it was pretty segregated. I remember hair metal being way more popular than Stranger Things portrays it. Bon Jovi, Def Leppard, Motley Crue were all huge. I guess the Billy character captured that. Lots of New Wave girls into George Michael and INXS.
First couple seasons were okay. This one is just "Hey, remember thing?" with zero actual context or understanding.
Here's an Amiga with a monochrome monitor.
Here's kids with level 15 elves in 1st ed. AD&D.
Here's a bunch of polyhedral dice with rounded edges and different colored numbers.
Here they're fighting Vecna four years before the module was released.
Here's a bunch of high school jock seniors watching Thundercats.
Here's a bunch of high school kids with college rock music tastes instead of listening to Tiffany and Madonna.
Here's a kid from the midwest dressed in Ocean Pacific.
Here's a teenager with a $3,000 video camera skating around with it.
41 yo boomer here.
Sorry to break you OP, but back in the day dress like a women don't make you strong just made you a fricking gay, we will punch you. Stop this non sense revisionism, this is was commies did in the USSR
There were pop stars like Boy George but they were viewed as novelty acts not something you'd see in public.
39 y/o master race checking in. Can confirm. I had shoulder length hair in high school and got beat up for 'looking like a woman'.
Built character tbh.
>Built character tbh
Clearly not enough because you're still here with the rest of us.
I'm not a troon or a redditor so I'm thankful for small mercies.
Long hair on men was popular as frick back then
People looked like THAT in the 80's?
22 y/o master race. Can also confirm. My bully beat the shit out of my for sucking his dick in the bathroom.
Older guy here too , are you guys bored at your office jobs too?
I am retired, invested in apartment and parking lots, I love all money from zoomers and millennials, they feel entitled to get a home, LOL, frick them, I just want another MAGA president before die.
The commies were infinitely more masculine than western men after 1848
They utilized feminism to get the chick vote and undermine western countries
based boomer
people will pretend like wokeness has been a slow progression to where we are today, but the 80s was more woke than the 90s and 00s. Then it went back up in the 10s. It probably peaked in 2020 and will start going back down as people get exhausted by it and the younger generation clearly doesn't give a frick.
I'm tired of you socialist morons trying to gaslight into thinking "the world was ALWAYS EXACTLY AS BAD as it is now" shut the frick up no it wasn't woke wasn't a real thing until the 2010s
do you think orwell wrote 1984 because he could see the future? moronic zoomie doesn't understand that middle aged white women b***hing today is the same as middle aged white women b***hing in the 80s.
read my post, I said the 90s was less woke than the 80s. The 80s was full of aging hippies who still had pull in society and moronic communist college-aged women burning bras and getting upset that the wars ended before they had the chance to protest them.
>middle aged white women b***hing today is the same as middle aged white women b***hing in the 80s
And you call me the moronic zoomie, holy shit you moron
That isn't what I remember.
>do you think Orwell wrote 1984 cause he could see the future
Yes of course. The govts were modeled after authoritarian soviets and nazis obviously but the warning wasn't about them. It was about what will happen, even in free democratic states.
Orwell wrote 1984 after being inspired by James Burnham's "The Managerial Society" where he essentially predicted that HR boomers would take over the whole world, decades before that actually happened, based on trends in liberal, fascist, and communist societies
If you watch preachy 90s shows (the West Wing is just over but anyhow) a common message is "Yeah so I'm gay/black/whatever, so what, that is a small thing about me, what do you care, its more important right now I'm a cop/artist/sportsman/scientist/whatever"
Wokeism is "I'M GAY!!! I'M GAY!!! STOP ERASING MY IDENTITY" its a very different thing.
The 90s was such a chill time.
Shame they've taken that course. The 90s was pretty based with shit. I compare static shock to miles morales as in miles is just spider man....but BLACK while static shock was his own level of fricking based.
I'll never forget the Lois and Clark episode that is about how men's only spaces are evil and they should jut let women in dammit!
The West Wing is directly responsible for like 99% of the insufferable shitlib/ identity narcissist/ borderline blood libel cultural rot present in modern media.
All the most insufferable homosexuals in government, journalism, and propagandist entertainment directly cite The West Wing as an inspiration and are constantly LARPing as Sorkin protagonists.
Stop falling into the trap of nostalgia for the same shit that inevitably leads to this mess in the first place. (This includes right wing nostalgia for the 50s).
West Wing and Stewart's Daily Show ruined America. We should have been Kilbourne and Bullworth
Possibly but that isn't what the scripts Sorkin wrote are about. e.g., S2E7 The Portland Trip if you want a specific example.
Nah, I grew up in a pretty liberal town in the 80s and people were still pretty homophobic and dressing a certain way would get you called gay.
My city was literally the interracial marriage capital of the country and it was still considered unusual. People just wouldn't say anything as long as they kept their lawn mowed.
You have no idea what you're talking about.
The show needed nudity
The Demogorgon is pretty hot, I'll admit
This, I was expecting at least 1 (one) nudity scene from either Millie or Sadie now that they’re 18
Still two eps left. Hoping its millie or nancy
'60s-'70s were about free sex and homos. Reagan brought conservatism back.
Wrong. People really hated queers in the 60s-70s more than you can imagine. Reagan didn't change that dipshit.
>andy warhol
>studio 54
>men in short shorts
>disco
They were gay as frick
Age: 47. Answer: frick no.
Men in skirts were literally beaten. It's why conservatives love the 80s.
>world were life was neon lit
lol homosexual mutt wears tube socks, pedo glasses and collects vhs tapes. hate these insufferable muh 80s homosexuals stranger gays have manifested. homosexual.
You seem upset.
Boilerplate NPC reddit response. Described your basic homosexual personality perfectly. Tell me more about you Synth Music To Sleep tab.
Anon is right. if you wre about int he 80's it was mainly yellow and brown, not neon
>t. non-white, zoomer/millennial or both
I accept your concession.
The gay in the sailor suit isn't wearing a skirt.
No. That's just israeliteflix and their propaganda.
woke in what sense? Will is still in the closet and the dyke only opened up to Steve which makes sense as you even then you'd only tell that to people you trust will not judge you (and given how lesbians are usually perceived differently, it is not a surprise that Steve just accepts it; maybe he wouldn't if it was a guy
also this kind of representation is nothing new on media, Mysterious Skin (2004) by gregg araki was set on the 80s with some gays and it still was plausible then
Gregg Araki was making movies about fans as early as 1987, they existed they just weren't mainstream like today.
The 80's were incredibly conservative compared to today, the satanic panic was in full swing and Christian fundamentalists had way more power than today. People thought heavy metal bands were unironic devil worshippers and had backwards messages in their songs.
I mean case in point Stranger Things has never been in-your-face about any of the characters being gay, Robin is the only one out (to the public and Steve) and her situation is entirely plausible
Robin isn't out. Watch shows before you speak. Only Steve knows. In fact there are like 5 scenes this season where it almost slips out of hers and Steve's mouth and both of them stop themselves or do damage control
What's woke about this screenshot?
he thinks the pink neon is a Tranflag or a Sex shop
I would make the Hawkins people super conservative, and the spooks/CIA super degenerate. Show the contrast that was really going on back then. Bush had pedo rings going on in that tome.
me on the right
That troon?
You must have serious brainworms from this website if you thinks she looks trans in any way
Imagine treating people like that and not expecting them to fight back. Dumbass.
what did he mean by this
Making the only pretty girl in the entire show a lesbian was fricking shameful.
I've never met a lesbian that would 100% refuse to frick me.
>I've never met a lesbian that would 100% refuse to frick me.
That's because lesbians don't exist.
let me guess. the one white boy is gay?
white???
No sane teenager would get that stupid cut
maybe he has downs
God no, hell, back then if a 16 year old called another 16 year old a homosexual, you were culturally required to draw blood or suck dick behind a dumpster. Black people were openly called the n-word and Mexicans were often referred to as "Taco Breath"
Shit was awesome and you sassy little homo's and your b***h-mom's ruined everything.
Frick, now I'm gonna go read an issue of Soldier of Fortune and wonder what it would be like had we not squandered our Cold War win on buttfrickers and fat chicks
Yes. All of the big stars were gay icons.
It's that time again!

I stand corrected
Shut up already, you annoying homosexual.
What is woke in this show besides the hot girl being a dike? Pretty sure hot girls lezzing out was never a "woke" thing, it was something men cheered on.
Zoomers have no concept of gender or sex.
To them two hot women = two gay men.
If a guy has anal w/ a woman than what's the difference if she pegs him?
Even if they hate troons theyre on the same spectrum
No LMAO. They would have called you a homosexual left and right.
This nepo baby they parachuted in is insufferably quirky
Compared to 40 years before? Yes, very.
Just as 40 years from now, it will be the same again.
Can't wait for the chimeren rights movement of 2062
The DCAU did a great job at handling social commentary its actually insane when you go back and realize half our current day problems only exist because people trip over the same frickin stones. Batman Beyond was even better and more contemporary. We could learn so much just from some god damn reruns.
Honestly bizarre to think about. Go back less than a century and US society was openly racist, sexist, homophobic etc. These were the normal positions a respectable politician would support by default. Now their great-grandkids attend BLM protests, kneel and apologise for being white, put pronouns in their bio, begin meetings by reminding everyone they're on stolen native land. Bravo conservatives for losing all cultural and institutional power so quickly.
>US society was openly racist
the fricking deepest truth is that this word did not exist. ideas like jim crowe had their place, not saying it worked 100% but there were reasons behind it that weren't even brought up with malice. sometimes I wonder what society from back then, even blacks, think about the blacks of today.
"I believe that certain groups are doing my race more harm in seeking to create dissension" - james baskett
tbh this goes for sexism as well. They really did hate gays tho
>this word did not exist
What a completely nonsensical and verifiably false claim.
>put pronouns in their bio
If this is one of the big things conservatives have a problem with in today's society, it's really no wonder no one takes them seriously.
Point is it signifies a progressive worldview antithetical to conservatism, and it's normalised to the point it's officially encouraged/required by many large companies, government departments etc. Just another sign of how the right wing has lost power. Not 10 years ago declaring your pronouns was some weird thing tumblr users did that ended up in cringe compilations, now it's a social norm.
“Political correctness is communist propaganda writ small. In my study of communist societies, I came to the conclusion that the purpose of communist propaganda was not to persuade or convince, not to inform, but to humiliate; and therefore, the less it corresponded to reality the better. When people are forced to remain silent when they are being told the most obvious lies, or even worse when they are forced to repeat the lies themselves, they lose once and for all their sense of probity. To assent to obvious lies is in some small way to become evil oneself. One's standing to resist anything is thus eroded, and even destroyed. A society of emasculated liars is easy to control. I think if you examine political correctness, it has the same effect and is intended to.”
― Theodore Dalrymple
As compared to the irrelevant nonsense libs shit themselves over? Like a black woman on syrup labels?
conservative liberals brought about the inevitable results of liberalism? well I never
These are my favorite characters.
TIL the version of the 80s edgelords get from pol is no more accurate than Stranger Things.
In the 80's you could genuinely be beaten to death for being gay. That was rare but happened. What was relatively common was for gay people to be beaten to a pulp. If you were Transgender it was highly likely you would have to abandon your family and friends and move location to transition.
A more civilized age.
Sure thing gramps.
He’s right, it was a genuinely better time then. Things were under control.
it was terrible. I had total freedom to roam, but also saw some really horrible things that have marked me for life. It sucked, if you didn't see it on TV you didn't know about it. You had to pay out the ass to rent shitty VHS tapes months after movies came out in cinema. I don't get the weird nostalgia people have for something they didn't go through.
No. Men were manly like pic related.
This looks like something from a Hiromi Kawakami book. It's an "homage"?
I will now eat your burger
Fricking disgusting. Americans should become extinct.
you need some bread to go with all that jelly
do americans literally
Woke nonsense already outstayed its welcome, it seems like an eternity but it's roughly 7-10 years old and already reviled and ridiculed worldwide.
The 80's were the start of serious discussion about gay rights. Most of your pop idols looked like this and were basically openly gay. Start of the whole aids scare and the gay lifestyle was considered the prime reason for the aids epidemic.
80s revisionism is making people now believe that all 80s music was cold neon pink synthwave when it was mostly all boomer rock like Springsteen and country soft rock shit like REO Speedwagon
It was mainly 80s new wave.
Synthpop was boomers miami vice. The neon came with that and peaked in the early 90s.
The 80s was two decades. Late 80s was colorful. Early 80s were more late 70s w/o disco. They were inspired by punk actually
What am I supposed to be seeing in this pic? They are wearing some sort of sailor costumes with shorts.
I think Steve and that girl work at some sort of themed mall food court place. I checked out after season 1 though
my aunt is gay and was around this age then, my dad outed her and she got disowned and eventually turned into a drug addict for awhile. the answer is no
>Were the '80s this woke?
Yes?
irc Skeletor was very gay and had manerisms
nuff said
this video caused a moral outrage ...
Just check the actual movies from the 80s.
Gays were supposed to be kinda tolerated, but they were the butt of all jokes and kinda gross for example.
Movie heroes were real men and usually kind of an actual role model.
Romantic movies were 99% WMWF because that's what audiences wanted to see, plus the biggest actors were still whites(or israeli, but you get the point).
Music wise, that's where CIA has always pushed for degeneracy the most(70s Rock for example) so you got "ambiguous" dudes like David Bowie, Boy George, George Michael(not ambiguous at all but yeah) but that's what the radio passed.
Socially it was a death sentence to "come out of the closet", and they had to frequent each other in their own communities.
Frick yeah. I honestly don't know why everyone claims there was ever any racial tension in the past. This is exactly what it was like then.
No of course not. The 80s in Stranger Things is a vibe, an aesthetic. It's not the reality. It's the pearly white, Tower of Babel, idealised version of the 80s. The Duffers are on a nostalgia trip but a 1-1 copy of the 1980s as they actually were wouldn't be easy to commodify because of all the bad shit that happened in that decade, so its just ignored and modern attitudes and sensibilities are injected into it to make it more palatable for audiences.
>all the bad shit that happened in that decade
The bad shit would like corporate raiding and the destruction of US manufacturing would be too topical.
I like how in Malibu Express, the gay cross-dressing dad gets joked/shit on by every other character (even his own family) and is even absent in the finale where all of the busty topless women are present.
I played dnd when I was a kid and seeing this series is kinda devastating.
After 2007, "being nerd" was cool and today, every single e-celeb plays dnd or watches critical role.
A couple persons I went to highschool with, have 50k+ subs on youtube now
I used to get beaten for playing and %100 of girls did a 360 on me every time I said I played dnd
And it wasn't just me, it was everyone on the group
And now this frickers and c**ts play dnd on camera
It is kind of disheartening. You want to move past that stuff but its infuriating
every subculture that doesn't have strict rules for entry will eventually be co-opted and exploited for profit
wokeness is a israeli marketing invention after y2k
80s/90s in the uk if you were queer or a troony you got the living frick kicked out of you regularly.
They weren’t welcome
In the early 80s all us white kids wanted to be BA Barrackas and Bruce Lee. Wokeness is just gaslighting that massive progress hasn't already been made so millennials can cash in and take credit
PASS THE DUTCHIE PON THE LEFT HAND SIDE
woke? the lesbian character is closeted
No. If you did this where i grew up in the 80s youd have the shit kicked out of you and catch abuse everytime you were seen out after the initial kicking.
I miss the 80s
Did what?
don't say 'woke' anymore. notice how *they* don't even say 'woke' anymore?
>be 80's gay
>dress like a literal gay
>play NES like a soi
>music sounded like electronic garbage
>Africa-tier disgusting cities
>Cocaine and wiener for lunch every day
>give the world AIDS with your gayginess
>b-b-but it was BAAASED!! Zoomers BTFO'd
This is getting sad. Everyday I grow more fond of the 90's.
90s were the peak of Western civilization. Don't let 80s GenXers/boomers or 50s romanticizers tell you otherwise.
the 90s couldn't have been the peak of anything when two prominent moral panics included
>"MORE FUNDS TO AIDS TREATMENTS AAAAAA HELP THE HECKIN GAYS"
and
>"BOMB THE SERBS WWIII NOW THEY ARE SHOOTING MUH HARMLESS MUSLIMS"
>muh politics
Don't give a shit. All of civilization's problems had been solved, which is what lead to modern wokeshit.
those moral panics are literally consequences of western hedonism and a sign of the end dumbass, politics is just the surface of it
80's was just demented old homosexual Reagan yelling at the commies rent free, getting the blacks hooked on crack, and then destroying the wages forever.
>BOMB THE SERBS WWIII NOW
Based, Serbs are immigrants and should have been bombed backed to Russia.
An authentic show about the 80's would suck it was boring as hell. I had four channels on my TV, and went outside and played football all day every day. No spooky business at all, except my friends found a man hanged by the river one day.
I was born in 85 so like some other guy said I identify more as a 90's kid. We lived in a pretty segregated neighborhood , no black kids and any Homosexuals were unheard of. My father was extremely wary of blacks and if /misc/ was around back then , he would probably be on there constantly. It was not "woke" at all , there were small whisperings of social activism , but then again I grew up in a suburb in the midwest so it did not really reach us
>this woke?
Steve and The Dyke getting along is like a inner city Black person getting along with a peckerwood after being in the shit together in Vietnam. It's not common but that wort of 'bled together' shit did happen.
Sneed

I want to know
If it was realistic the boys would be saying gay and gay all the time
Using the word homosexual for pussy and gay for lame was common until like literally 2013
I don't remember people saying "that's gay" until the early '00s. gay was common in the '80s and '90s though. You're right. They say it in 16 Candles and other movies.
They were saying that up until like 2015. Saying "gay" is not an 80's thing boomer.
Calling somebody’s gay from 1930-1980 was a major insult that would result in a fight
Calling somebody a gay from 1980-2010
Or so was more of a tease
Post 2010 gay is treated like Black person
Calling someone a "gay" in 2015 was absolutely frowned upon. You could get fired doing that as a high school or college teacher post 2008 or so.
Kids said it, obviously grown ass adults don't insult each other in that way.
Kids still call each other gays when they can get away with it
Lol I remember in the 2000s you could call someone a homosexual even in Youtube comments or other websites, kids said it in middle school even, now you can't say it at all
Robin needs a good dicking
Robin is not for sexual!
Thats all shes for
The proof is in the pudding
>tfw bullying was actually a thing in the past
Did boomers really? I never experienced any bullying in middle or high school in the 2010's. Everyone, from the sporty kids to the nerds all acted and talked the same. We all shared the same memes to each other and we all watched the same marvel movies and Netflix shows. We were gentrified and it was based.
I went to a pretty rural school and got bullied a lot. Not by jocks ( we had a strict "sportsmanship conduct" rule) Hicks and Wiggers were the main offenders
How can you get bullied by people just as homosexual as you are? And everything a zoomer is says is coated with a hundred layers of irony. Nothing is serious, even the teasing.
I got teased mainly for my type 1 diabetes. Hicks throwing M&Ms at me. Some wigger poured a sugar packet into my water when I went to the bathroom during study hall shit like that
They're rewriting history
In what way is Stranger Things portraying the 80s as "woke"? I have no context for your definition of "woke" nor does your picture illustrate your friend's question.
Absolutely not.
Watch some television and film from the actual 80s if you need to see it.
But she says she has to be careful about who she comes on to.
>woke
what do you even mean?
idk dude, what does conservative or progressive mean? stop being a homosexual
No
why does she have a band aid on her knee???
>fren
yeah okay you fricking shill
No. Because of the AIDS outbreak, homophobia was at a all time high. No fricking way kids in 1980s Ohio are coming out of the closet. And Lucas would’ve definitely been called a Black person on a regular basis. Him kissing Max at a dance? Oh frick no that wouldn’t happen. Chances are, they’d not let him in the dance
They would have let him in the dance in Ohio. The frick are you talking about. It was the '80s not the '60s. But yeah kissing a white girl was still probably taboo.
There's only one gay character right now and she is still in the closet except to Steve. Accurate for the '80s.
Will will come out and start sucking dicks
https://scholars-stage.org/culture-wars-are-long-wars/
Social changes always start with the elite, spread through institutions, appear in pop culture, and are finally adopted as social norms by the next generation. Maybe regular people still called each other homosexuals in the 80s but the '''culture war ''' was already lost.
they don't always "start" with the elite but they eventually spearhead them and lead the charge
If this was a UK show they would have 100% had the teens go naked or at least semi naked.
for 95 percent of America the 80s were not woke in any way. My church and school openly said the word Black person.
gays were aids ridden mistakes, and israelites weren't trusted.
It was a based time.
Not all of America in the '80s was Alabama, peckerwood.
>can't ready 95 percent
Obvious israelite
In the real 80s she would date Steve even if she were a lesbian
Steve is the perfect beard
This. What'd actually happen is she'd have Steve ask the chick to hang out with them, and then if they managed to sus she was a lesbian than Steve would go on "dates" with them and then head home early.
maya
hawke
boooooooooooooobas
suck frick
Lol. HELL NO. I was an 80s kid.
It's weird watching ST (hence why I dont). The aesthetics look okay but the tone and behavior is way way way off. Like how an alien might perceive it
>No 80s kid argued about which ghostbuster they were. No 80s kid cared if Winston was a "scientist"
>NOBODY accepted homosexuality back then in middle America. The term queer was very derogatory and the concept was socially disgusting
>Only people in large cities or fatasses who were teens in the 60s were Liberal. Reagan was insanely popular. It was weird to criticise him. Even after Iran-Contra
>A Black boy with a white girl would have gone over like a turd in the punch bowl
>Despite this most white kids had a black friend but they were expected to behave like a human being or stick to hanging with other blacks
>Anybody talking political beyond "death to commies" was considered a nerd and totally uncool
based boomer
Sounds like it sucked during your time and town. I'm glad to have been a 90s kid in a safe eastern suburb. Where we can kiss cute ginger girls without getting lynched.
too bad your completely inorganic, astroturfed near complete hegemony on every aspect of western culture has made the americas & europe barren wastelands for the soul and senses everybody want to escape from eh? Black person.
Whatever you say, man. My family worked for everything they had, and they advanced in life and found a comfortable place to raise me, and I was able to get along with all races. 9/10, would live my childhood again. I only wish I wasn't such an autist. I could have milked the time for so much more.
>I was able to get along with all races
same thing my man, same thing, wish it lasted longer too
I mean, I do have to admit there was one family on our street that we thought was racist. The kid there wasn't allowed to hang out with us a lot. There was always some excuse or another. We caught on to what it was when were like 12-13, and the only kid that his parents would allow to hang out with him regularly was another white boy. Which was very odd, because that kid had clear behavior issues, as his family was trashy as hell, and just happened to be able to afford a home where we lived.
Well, one day, we're having a snowball fight. And the trashy kid puts on a big show as if he's hurt. But he always did that. He was so dramatic. You would think we bullied him, but we really didn't. He was just a sore loser, and always feigned injury when he couldn't beat us at something.
So, trashy kid goes to the other white kid's home, and later police show up. The trashy kid put on such a convincing show for the racist family, that they called the cops. The claim was that one of us stuffed our snowball with rocks. Which nobody believe happened. I sure as hell didn't use rocks, and the other boys sounded convincing in their denials.
After that, there was some bad blood between us and that racist family. But the kid wasn't truly racist. His parents maybe. But the kid was just under their thumb. As a teenager, he tried to make amends and play football with us. Everyone forgave him. They were all cool. Not me though. I was still holding a grudge. But in retrospect, I was being a huge b***h. I should have just forgiven him too. I've always felt ashamed about that.
