Weirdly, Jason Aaron's Punisher. Deconstructing characters we already knew weren't admirable, but almost trying to rub it in our faces how bad they are and make us feel guilty for identifying with them.

Fun fact, Larry David and Jerry Seinfeld originally wanted to shoot it documentary style with no laugh track and the network told them they had to shoot in front of an audience like all their other sitcoms.

The network was right, making an audience laugh forces people to write jokes that work outside of a writer's room. That's why laugh-track-free sitcoms usually tank in reruns while Seinfeld and Friends keep making money (not that making money = quality though).

          >that's why laugh-track-free sitcoms usually tank in reruns
It really is a shame that this is the case when normies decide to watch slop like the big bang theory or those nickelodeon shows over good shows (I know several people who still watch drake and josh and icarly), at least the laugh track died down but now every single show is trying to go for awkward anti-humour. I would say the US office is to blame but I'm not sure

            Anonymous

It's partly the US Office (which basically uses the camera reactions/interviews as their laugh track) and partly the idea that laugh-track sitcoms are uncool, which means any show that wants to be cool and smart has no studio audience to tell them when they're not connecting with the Average Slob.

Basically the Frasier type of show is impossible to make now (I haven't seen the new Frasier). Today Seinfeld and David would get to do the show their way and it would be a very niche thing.

    Not sure.
What makes the Seinfeld ending special is that
    1. Many many fans hated, and
    2. It's hard to argue in-universe against it, because those shitheads genuinely deserved to rot in jail.

"Fans hated it" and "but it does make sense" isn't a common combo on Cinemaphile.

      Anonymous

      >deserved to rot in gaol
Good Samaritan laws aren't felonies, at most you'd get fined and community service. Even with the daisy chain of character witnesses raking them over the coals, 99.9% of it would be inadmissable in court and it would be unconstitutional to upgrade their charges for it. Especially because it was in an entirely different state from New York.
In fact, I don't think they were guilty of any actual felonies back in NYC either. Minor misdemeanours, maybe, but nothing serious.

I think it's a funny joke to end the show on, but it wasn't realistic. Being a scumbag isn't a crime.

Felt like a show that bowed out while it was still good instead of continuing until it became shit.
The ending itself is also fine, and the trial was a novel way to bring back a lot of characters from throughout the show. I mean seriously how else would you want it to end? Some heartfelt shit what feel forced and bad

After watching the show in syndication reruns in early 2000s and streaming binging later, the finale was great and a perfect send off.

But as a fan watching it through the 1990s and then watching the finale in May 1998, at the time we all thought it was such a disappointment.

We expecting their show to be picked up and become rich, or Jerry and Elaine to finally get together, or even someone die.we hated because we thought it was a terrible end for our favorite characters.

But watching the series again and you realize they were all self absorbed buttholes who deserved prison. And that all the various guest stars who came to the trial, were then innocent victims. And they deserved a win.

Sandman issue #75. Neil Gaiman compares himself to Shakespeare and whines about how much time writing takes.

The whole twist of Morpheus's deal with Shakespeare was he'd be the greatest writer ever but he wouldn't be present for his family and he would suffer from success. It explores nothing about Shakespeare only having 2 original plays and in Sandman, they were both commissioned by Dream and based on existing stories. So why not have the deal involve that Shakespeare could improve a story (like how the comic begins with Shakespeare submitting what would become the King James Bible which he is rumored to have authored) but he couldn't create one. But no, just a comic writer sucking his own dick because Wizard liked him.
