He's a dipshit who got really lucky. Robb Stark, Renly and Stannis would have executed him had they managed to take the throne. He's lucky it was the Lannisters and then he proceeds to betray them despite being his only real allies.

That, and the line from the show of him saying "my real father died in King's Landing" was him realizing that the Starks were more of a family to him than his actual blood relatives, and with it came regret and self loathing at his actions. He doesn't wish he could run away from Winterfell and the Boltons and live a happy life, he only wishes he could have died with the man that was like a brother to him.
