A dirty bomb wouldn't have those on any significant scale.

Our main characterd never saw flash brighter than the sun and heard VERY loud explosion. They only see the cloud, that could leave normal explosion. Dirty bomb is not nuclear weapon, just radiological.

That kind of yield would that be? Nukes seem really underwhelming in reality, no wonder you need 4-5 for every target

            Anonymous

the yield is not as important as a the dissipation rate, which is exponential at any yield
the blast wave carrying heat away from the explosion, and the radiation are what you have to worry about, the chance that you're actually shredded by the explosion itself is pretty low
so spreading out many explosions evenly over a large area is how you actually wipe out civilization infrastructure

            Anonymous

Inverse square law means that for all explosives past a certain yield you need to make the bombs much larger than is practical for only a marginal increase in the destructive radius. It makes more logistical sense to make a larger quantity.

It was only fired at half strength. Wonder what the full volume would have looked like. Hell, Teller in the US had designs for gigaton weapons. Even one that was to be used as a trigger for a ten gigaton device.

The fireball is accurate, but they did not show the shockwave, radioactive fallout, or the return of the air after it had been pushed out by the detonation acting as a secondary shockwave and also instantly igniting an enormous firestorm with flame as tall as buildings thanks to the sudden influx of oxygen.

          Anonymous

That kind of yield would that be? Nukes seem really underwhelming in reality, no wonder you need 4-5 for every target

          Imo way too small
Compare to the footage of that fertilizer plant that detonated in Indonesia a few years back, or the classic Halifax explosion. (Which fricked up the whole city, happened way out in the bay, and was only 3 kt) The shockwaves should have ripped across the city breaking every window for miles & raising dust and smoke like a thousand 9/11s. Surviving structures should be on fire. A ground detonation = ungodly rain of burning & molten debris for several minutes. The city should look like it descended into Hell, not like it had three little whoopsies.

It's dependent on how accurate they are trying to be too the source material of the games. In the fallout universe rather than relying on an arsenal of thermonuclear weapon with megaton yields, China and the US instead opt to build a lot more smaller bombs similar in size to the little fat man device used on Nagasaki.
Part of the reason being anti ballistic missile systems, the Chinese launched something like 100 bombs at the Las Vegas strip area, and the anti ABS system got most of them. But if they where willing to launch 100 bombs at Las Vegas who knows how many they dropped on DC, there's craters from dozens of impact sites in fallout 3 in the DC area shown.
There's also the much more likely reason and the stupid writers are lazy fricking morons.

Exactly. Airburst well over the target (a) and the entry phase is at like, mach 27. You'd see an afterimage of the streak at best.

Can you really just do whatever you want with a nuke (set it on fire, shoot it, kick it) without it going off because it isn't "primed"?

It's not that it isn't "primed" - it has to be triggered. It is a bomb within a bomb. The outside bomb compresses the inner enriched media target. The outside bomb has to explode perfectly, or the enriched media is simply blasted out one side without undergoing nuclear fission.

      Is this from Beirut?

      >The blast was so powerful that it physically shook the whole country of Lebanon. It was felt in Turkey, Syria, Palestine, Jordan, and Israel, as well as parts of Europe, and was heard in Cyprus, more than 240 km (150 mi) away. It was detected by the United States Geological Survey as a seismic event of magnitude 3.3 and is considered one of the most powerful artificial non-nuclear explosions in history. It was powerful enough to affect Earth's ionosphere.
Christ all this from some fricking fertilizer?

I know you're being sarcastic, but you are talking about a third world country. First world countries have strict regulations. There is high security and preventative measures, like zero flammable sources within the designated areas.
It's still dangerous obviously, but it's like comparing US escalators to Chinese ones. Last I checked nobody has been swallowed by a US escalator.

Your point makes zero sense. Try again.

Almost all nuclear waste is stored right at the plant that produced it, or nuclear research facilities like Hanson. The feds have wanted to bury it all hundreds of meters below a mountain in Nevada since 1978 but it's never been built because of politics, especially Harry Reid (high seniority senator from Nevada). It'll probably finally get built after he kicks the bucket. In the meantime, the utilities running the plants have received probably 20 billion dollars by now for the cancellation of the contracts to move the waste.

What's your point? What does Hawaii or the US have to do with anything? You realize there are first world countries outside of the US?

to be fair it was a metric frickload of it (like 3 large warehouses) and fertilizer is extremely energetic which is why it helps plants. The main ingredient in most common fertilizers is also the main ingredient in the most common explosive.
Could have been a secret nuke but generally I assume it's simpler for spooks to just make the thing they claim happened happen rather than fake it and cover it up. Easier to hide a detonator or steal a plane then carry out some elaborate tech intensive secret attack then cover up every possible hole in the story.

Nukes are a meme that have constantly been overhyped by the media for decades, we should use them more often

I love how moronic the plot is for this, the plan was to bluff all the nuclear states to launch all of their nukes at once and then self-destruct them so they had nothing left to defend themselves with against Cobra Commander, because of course all the nuclear armed countries have 100% of their stockpiles ready to launch

Yes. It is a forced reaction which can only occur under very specific particle-scale conditions.

I think at least the old nukes were primed with dynamite, so if you set it on fire you might get an explosion, but it probably wouldn’t explode in the way it’s intended, so the final reaction probably wouldn’t happen. You’d just render the bomb inoperable if it were to happen and end up with the uranium/plutonium and some scrap metal.
But the bombs even then were likely designed to not go off from something as simple as being exposed to fire. You’d have to partly disassemble it to expose the explosive material somehow.

actually triggering the nuclear reaction is very difficult and involves a lot of very exact forces
getting it to blow up a little and drench an area in lethal radioactive dust is not as hard

Do my best to survive, I guess. I live in a small town on the edge of the woods, so would have some time to react before the fallout reaches. Probably seek refuge in one of the thousands of ancient caves across the hills and mountains of Appalachia in which I live.

Many here have partially underground concrete tornado shelters as well which is better than nothing. Ideally, I don't have to live through a global thermonuclear holocaust, but it's a real possibility.

        Let's make it happen!

Planet will survive. Life on the planet, probably not.

I think it depends a lot more on the velocity of the asteroid than its mass.
If that’s a scene from the show then I’m pretty sure they did the math. It makes sense that using thrusters, you couldn’t get an asteroid of that size up to the speed needed to make it a planet killer by the time it moves from the Kluiper belt to Earth.
But a massive asteroid hurtling through space of that size that natural forces of gravity and the universe? It could be hurtling at exponentially, even astronomically higher velocities relative to Earth than what even the advanced thrusters in the show were capable of pushing it up to.

Thats just a random pic, but in the show yeah they use thrusters and while it doesnt end earth, they send almost a dozen iirc and it really screws with things. Asteroid Belt terrorist who gets a big following

What if you woke up in the middle of the night after missing a date with your potential gf only to go to a diner and just happen to be walking by a pay phone that rings when you walk by and you pick it up and get a call from a guy working in NORAD who was supposed to call his dad but called the pay phone instead and let slip that you had to GTFO immediately because the birds are in the air and you have 2 hours to live though?

Be thankful I own hundreds of books since electricity and internet are probably going to be offline for a while. I'm at no risk of dying since I don't live in or near a major city and my community is largely self sufficient and will just rely on peoples' farms to keep everybody fed.

    Sucks for citygays though.
